Power Optimal Control Allocation for Distributed Electric Propulsion in a Series/Parallel Hybrid Powertrain

This paper describes a thrust allocation scheme that minimizes power consumption in an electrified powertrain with Distributed Electric Propulsion. It takes advantage of an observation about component efficiency maps, that efficiency is often highest at high torque/high speed conditions. This optimal approach is demonstrated to satisfy total thrust and net yaw axis torque requirements, making it suitable for utilizing differential thrust for maneuvering.

Proper battery system design for GAS experiments

The purpose of this paper is to help the GAS experimenter to design a battery system that meets mission success requirements while at the same time reducing the hazards associated with the battery system. Lead-acid, silver-zinc and alkaline chemistry batteries will be discussed. Lithium batteries will be briefly discussed with emphasis on back-up power supply capabilities. The hazards associated with different battery configurations will be discussed along with the controls necessary to make the battery system two-fault tolerant.

Battery Cell Thermal Runaway Calorimeter

We currently have several methods for determining total energy output of an 18650 lithium ion cell. We do not, however, have a good method for determining the fraction of energy that dissipates via conduction through the cell can vs. the energy that is released in the form of ejecta. Knowledge of this fraction informs the design of our models, battery packs, and storage devices; (a) No longer need to assume cell stays together in modeling (b) Increase efficiency of TR mitigation (c) Shave off excess protection.

Selecting an Encapsulant for an Aerospace Superconducting Machine

Achieving larger benefits from electrified propulsion in single aisle aircraft (the largest commercial aircraft market segment) necessitates that a significant fraction of their 20 MW or greater propulsion system be electrified. 5 to possibly 20 of the MW-scale electric machines investigated by NASA would be required to meet this need. Approximately 10-20 of NASA’s MW-scale electric machines would be required to reach the necessary power levels. Therefore, electric machines of 5 MW or greater are of interest. However, conventionally cooled high power density MW-scale electric machines still produce a significant amount of waste heat, which makes obtaining these power levels problematic. Highly efficient fully superconducting electric machines (or those with a cryogenically cooled, high purity copper or aluminum stator) are a possible solution but have multiple barriers to be overcome. One such barrier is the durability of superconducting windings. Superconductors are typically brittle, and encapsulants used to hold windings in place are a significant source of stress because of the mismatches in coefficient of thermal expansion at temperatures between room temperature and operational temperatures (20 to 77 K). These encapsulants also form a thermal barrier that can be detrimental to cooling the superconductors. This paper describes an initial study of commercially available encapsulants as it relates to superconducting machine applications along with initial modeling of thermal stress in superconducting windings for a superconducting or cryogenically cooled stator in a 5 MW electric machine.

HRMS Sky Survey Wideband Feed System Design for DSS 24 Beam Waveguide Antenna

The High-Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS) Sky Survey project will be implemented on the DSS 24 beam waveguide (BWG) antenna over the frequency range of 2.86 to 10 GHz. Two wideband, ring-loaded, corrugated feed horns were designed to cover this range. The horns match the frequency-dependent gain requirements for the DSS 24 BWG system. The performance of the feed horns and the calculated system performance of DSS 24 are presented.

Data Mining for ISHM of Liquid Rocket Propulsion Status Update

This document consists of presentation slides that review the current status of data mining to support the work with the Integrated Systems Health Management (ISHM) for the systems associated with Liquid Rocket Propulsion. The aim of this project is to have test stand data from Rocketdyne to design algorithms that will aid in the early detection of impending failures during operation. These methods will be extended and improved for future platforms (i.e., CEV/CLV).

Nickel cadmium battery performance modelling

The development of a model to predict cell/battery behavior given databases of temperature is described. The model accommodates batteries of various structural as well as thermal designs. Cell internal design modifications can be accommodated as long as the databases reflect the cell's performance characteristics. Operational parameters can be varied to simulate any number of charge or discharge methods under any orbital regime. The flexibility of the model stems from the broad scope of input variables and allows the prediction of battery performance under simulated mission or test conditions.

Synthetic battery cycling techniques

Synthetic battery cycling makes use of the fast growing capability of computer graphics to illustrate some of the basic characteristics of operation of individual electrodes within an operating electrochemical cell. It can also simulate the operation of an entire string of cells that are used as the energy storage subsystem of a power system. The group of techniques that as a class have been referred to as Synthetic Battery Cycling is developed in part to try to bridge the gap of understanding that exists between single cell characteristics and battery system behavior.

An averaging battery model for a lead-acid battery operating in an electric car

A battery model is developed based on time averaging the current or power, and is shown to be an effective means of predicting the performance of a lead acid battery. The effectiveness of this battery model was tested on battery discharge profiles expected during the operation of an electric vehicle following the various SAE J227a driving schedules. The averaging model predicts the performance of a battery that is periodically charged (regenerated) if the regeneration energy is assumed to be converted to retrievable electrochemical energy on a one-to-one basis.

Nickel-hydrogen CPV battery update

The multicell common pressure vessel (CPV) nickel hydrogen battery manufactured by Johnson Controls Battery Group, Inc. has completed full flight qualification, including random vibration at 19.5 g for two minutes in each axis, electrical characterization in a thermal vacuum chamber, and mass-spectroscopy vessel leak detection. A first launch is scheduled for late in 1992 or early 1993 by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Specifics of the launch date are not available at this time due to the classified nature of the program. Release of orbital data for the battery is anticipated following the launch.

Transitional Flow in Thin Tubes for Space Station Freedom Radiator

A two dimensional finite volume method is used to predict the film coefficients in the transitional flow region (laminar or turbulent) for the radiator panel tubes. The code used to perform this analysis is CAST (Computer Aided Simulation of Turbulent Flows). The information gathered from this code is then used to augment a Sinda85 model that predicts overall performance of the radiator. A final comparison is drawn between the results generated with a Sinda85 model using the Sinda85 provided transition region heat transfer correlations and the Sinda85 model using the CAST generated data.

Computation of Optimal Interplanetary Low-Thrust Trajectories With Bounded Thrust Magnitude By Means of the Generalized Newton-Raphson Method

The generalized Newton-Raphson method, an iterative procedure for solving nonlinear operator equations, has been extended in application to variational problems with bounded control variables. A minimum fuel interplanetary low thrust orbital transfer problem is worked out in detail to demonstrate the practical aspects of the algorithm as well as its computational effectiveness. The control variables are the thrust magnitude, limited from zero to some prescribed maximum value, and the thrust steering angle.
