Battery Definition for the Mars Environmental Survey Mission (MESUR) Pathfinder

Silver-zinc (Ag-Zn) battery technology has been baselined as the energy storage system for the MESUR mission. The mission profile will require the operation of this battery in a manner not usually seen for this technology. In particular, the combination of storage time followed by multiple cycles as a function of fluctuating temperatures and charge/discharge rates, and limited available time for charging has not been previously demonstrated.

Up-and-Coming IMCs

While the good oxidation and environmental resistance, high melting points, and comparatively low densities of such ordered intermetallics as Ti 3 Al, NiAl, FeAl, and NbAl 3 render them good candidates for advanced aerospace structures, their poor toughness at low temperatures and low strength at elevated temperatures have prompted the development of fiber-reinforced intermetallic-matrix composites (IMCs) with more balanced characteristics. Fabrication methods for continuous-fiber IMCs under development include the P/M 'powder cloth' method, the foil/fiber method, and thermal spraying. The ultimate success of IMCs depends on fibers truly compatible with the matrix materials.

Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop

The Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop was held at the Ohio Aerospace Institute, Brook Park, Ohio cosponsored by NASA Lewis Research Center and the Ohio Aerospace Institute, August 15-19, 1994. The workshop consisted of classes, vendor demonstrations, and paper sessions. The classes and vendor demonstrations provided participants with the information on widely used tools for thermal and fluids analysis. The paper sessions provided a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among thermal and fluids analysis. Paper topics included advances a uses of established thermal and fluids computer codes (such as SINDA and TRASYS) as well as unique modeling techniques and applications.

NTF Test 201 - FAVOR - F-111 Check Standard

Presentation of test process at the National Transonic Facility, Nasa Langley Research Center. The test showcased was part of a cooperative test effort between ARC, LaRC, GRC, and AEDC collecting aerodynamic and process data on the modified F-111 FAVOR model.
