Low Temperature Environment Operations of Turboengines (Design and User's Problems)

The author summarizes and links together a number of papers that were presented at the Propulsion and Energetics (PEP) symposium on low temperature environment operation of turbojet engines that was held October 8 to 12, 1990. Topics covered include operational experience of ice ingestion in the turboprop engine in the 2,000 hp class, icing on helicopter turbo engines, icing test facilities, ice relevant cloud physical parameters, and low temperature and fuel problems.

Development of new sealed bipolar lead-acid battery

New light weight composite bipolar plates which can withstand the corrosive environment of the lead acid battery have made possible the construction of a sealed bipolar lead acid battery that promises to achieve very high specific power levels and substantially higher energy densities than conventional lead acid batteries. Performance projections based on preliminary experimental results show that the peak specific power of the battery can be as high as 90 kW/kg, and that a specific power of 5 kW/kg can be sustained over several thousand pulses.

Development of a lithium secondary battery separator

A nonporous membrane based on the polymerization of 2,3-dihydrofuran followed by crosslinking in situ was prepared. The material is compatible with rechargeable Li battery components and, when swollen with an appropriate solvent such as tetrahydrofuran, exhibits separator resistance and Li transport equivalent to Celgard.

The Effects of Lunar Dust on EVA Systems During the Apollo Missions

Mission documents from the six Apollo missions that landed on the lunar surface have been studied in order to catalog the effects of lunar dust on Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) systems, primarily the Apollo surface space suit. It was found that the effects could be sorted into nine categories: vision obscuration, false instrument readings, dust coating and contamination, loss of traction, clogging of mechanisms, abrasion, thermal control problems, seal failures, and inhalation and irritation. Although simple dust mitigation measures were sufficient to mitigate some of the problems (i.e., loss of traction) it was found that these measures were ineffective to mitigate many of the more serious problems (i.e., clogging, abrasion, diminished heat rejection). The severity of the dust problems were consistently underestimated by ground tests, indicating a need to develop better simulation facilities and procedures.

Some Experiments on the Passage of High-Energy Protons in Dense Matter

A series of experiments designed to study the nuclear cascade resulting from the passage of 1 to 3 GeV protons in matter has been in progress at the Brookhaven Cosmotron. Preliminary results on the fluxes of fast neutrons (upper limits) and of strongly interacting particles above 50 MeV are summarized here (Fig. 1 and Table 1). The four cases studied are: 1-GeV protons on Fe, on chondritic material, and on C 5 H 8 O 2 , and 3-GeV protons on Fe.

Unraveling the Complex History of Aqueous Alteration and Metamorphism in CV Chondrite, Camel Donga 040

Camel Donga (CD) 040 is a CV breccia collected from Australia in 1988. Initial studies of CD 040 revealed two lithologies, both containing chondrules up to 1 mm in diameter (some with fine-grained rims) and abundant troilite, but each with remarkably different olivine compositions. Lithology 1 was characterized as petrologic type 3 material, while lithology 2 was described as being “heated to ~1100°C”. CD 040 was initially classified as an ungrouped C3; however, subsequent analyses of oxygen isotopes and bulk rock compositions confirmed that both lithologies were CV chondrite material. Though CD 040 was one of the earliest examples of a CV chondrite containing metamorphosed material, it was never extensively studied. Here we report the results of a detailed study of CD 040, focusing primarily on the petrography and mineral chemistry of metamorphosed lithology.
