One of the most important considerations in the design of liquid fueled rockets is the method utilized to transfer the propellants from the propellant tanks to the rocket engine. Use of storable liquid propellant propulsion systems, particularly those employing hydrazine as a fuel, facilitates the attractive possibility of employing the monopropellant virtues of the fuel in order to generate gases for pressurization of the propellant tanks.

Nickel-hydrogen battery state of charge during low rate trickle charging

Battery temperature increase, due to low rate trickle charging, has been determined experimentally, using a six cell battery module in a test setup simulating the anticipated AXAF-1 prelaunch environment. Test results indicate trickle charge rates less than or equal to the self discharge rate do not increase dissipation beyond that due to the self discharge. Significant trickle charge rates (approximately C/500) result in battery temperatures only a few degrees (F) higher than those observed during periods of open circuit stand.

Characterizing the subglacial environment of lower Thwaites Glacier using radar modeling

Understanding the spatial heterogeneity beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica, is vital to projecting its impact on future sea levels. Radar-echo sounding (RES) is commonly used to infer subglacial conditions, but these data can be challenging to interpret. We assess basal heterogeneity across Thwaites Glacier by comparing RES returns to a radar backscattering simulator for over 400 km of RES data. The modeled variations in bed returned power exhibited a strong correlation with actual RES data in 40% of our simulated flight segments, which we consider evidence for a relatively homogeneous glacier bed. Other sites (40%) demonstrated improved fit quality when hydrology or substrate transitions were introduced in the bed material model. The remaining simulated segments (20%) were diagnosed as having more complex basal heterogeneity. The spatial distribution of complex heterogeneity appears to coincide with asymmetric patterns in the RES specularity content, which has been interpreted in previous studies as a signature for channelized hydrology. Conversely, the homogeneous substrate locations coincide with areas of fast-moving ice in western Thwaites. Our simulation method can isolate power variations induced by material heterogeneity vs topography, which is an important limitation of existing RES analysis methods.

Manufacturing Process Development of a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite Shaft for Electric Motors

Electric aircraft applications require electric motors with increased specific power and efficiency. Composite structural components in motors are a potential solution for reducing motor mass, reducing magnetic losses, and limiting undesired conduction paths for fault, electromagnetic interference, or common-mode currents. In this report, manufacturing trials for a high-speed carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite motor shaft are presented. Four prototype shafts were produced using a hybrid biaxial/triaxial fabric that was circumferentially wrapped onto an additively manufactured high-temperature washout mandrel. An additional traditional overbraid approach was also evaluated and shows promise for high-rate, high-performance parts using automated manufacturing. This paper discusses the shaft design, manufacturing methods explored, material selection, the manufacturing trials, and the lessons learned. The results of this manufacturing investigation show feasibility for manufacturing composite shafts for electric motors.
