Synthetic battery cycling techniques

Synthetic battery cycling makes use of the fast growing capability of computer graphics to illustrate some of the basic characteristics of operation of individual electrodes within an operating electrochemical cell. It can also simulate the operation of an entire string of cells that are used as the energy storage subsystem of a power system. The group of techniques that as a class have been referred to as Synthetic Battery Cycling is developed in part to try to bridge the gap of understanding that exists between single cell characteristics and battery system behavior.

QS ATMS Calibration Data Book Government Version: Pre-Launch Version

The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) SN301 is an instrument onboard the QuickSounder Satellite System, QuickSounder mission (renamed QS). Throughout this document the mission may be referred to as QuickSounder or QS. The purpose of this document is to provide information needed to interpret and process QS ATMS science data. The contents of the data book incorporate results from pre-launch subsystem-level and instrument-level testing as well as post-launch testing performed during instrument commissioning. Major milestones include instrument thermal vacuum (TVAC) testing in May 2024 and observatory TVAC testing in 2026. QS launch will be no earlier than Feb. 15, 2027.

An ESR study of the UV degradation of FEP

Spacecraft in low earth orbit are subjected to significant levels of high energy radiation, including ultraviolet (UV) and visible ultraviolet (VUV) wavelengths. The effects of UV radiation are enhanced over those at the surface of the earth, where the only incident wavelengths are greater than 290 nm. In low earth orbit the incident UV wavelengths extend below 290 nm into the VUV region, where the Lyman alpha-emissions of atomic hydrogen occur at 121 nm. In addition to electromagnetic radiation, in low earth orbit polymer materials may also be subjected to atomic oxygen particle radiation, which will result in direct oxidation of the polymer.

Chalcogenide-Based Non-Volatile Memory Technology

Chalcogenide is a proven phase change material used in re-writeable CDs and DVDs. This material changes phases, reversibly and quickly, between an amorphous state that is dull in appearance and electrically high in resistance, and a polycrystalline state that is highly reflective and low in resistance. The application of this commercially proven technology to create dense, high-speed, non-volatile semiconductor memories is discussed.

Galileo Optical Experiment (GOPEX) Optical Train: Design and Validation at the Table Mountain Facility

The Galileo Optical Experiment (GOPEX) has demonstrated the first laser communications uplink to a deep space vehicle. This article describes the optical design and validation tests performed at the Table Mountain Facility (TMF) transmitter site. The system used a 0.6-m telescope and an optical system at coude focus to produce the uplink beam. The optical system used a pulsed neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:Yag) laser and beam diverger optics to produce the required optical output. In order to validate the optical design, a number of uplinks were performed on Earth-orbiting satellites (e.g., Lageos 1 and 2).

ITOS Power System Design

A brief description of the ITOS power systems is presented. The descriptions are from viewgraphs shown to the participants of the Workshop. A block diagram of ITOS power supply subsystem is presented along with graphs representing: ITOS voltage limit versus temperature; and battery charge-discharge current profiles over an orbit period.

Nickel cadmium battery performance modelling

The development of a model to predict cell/battery behavior given databases of temperature is described. The model accommodates batteries of various structural as well as thermal designs. Cell internal design modifications can be accommodated as long as the databases reflect the cell's performance characteristics. Operational parameters can be varied to simulate any number of charge or discharge methods under any orbital regime. The flexibility of the model stems from the broad scope of input variables and allows the prediction of battery performance under simulated mission or test conditions.

Viking lander spacecraft battery

The Viking Lander was the first spacecraft to fly a sterilized nickel-cadmium battery on a mission to explore the surface of a planet. The significant results of the battery development program from its inception through the design, manufacture, and test of the flight batteries which were flown on the two Lander spacecraft are documented. The flight performance during the early phase of the mission is also presented.

Avalanche Photodiode Statistics in Triggered-Avalanche Detection Mode

The output of a triggered avalanche mode avalanche photodiode is modeled as Poisson distributed primary avalanche events plus conditionally Poisson distributed trapped carrier induced secondary events. The moment generating function as well as the mean and variance of the diode output statistics are derived. The dispersion of the output statistics is shown to always exceed that of the Poisson distribution. Several examples are considered in detail.

Technology Demonstrator of an Americium-Fuelled Radioisotope Stirling Generator

Americium-241 is used as the fuel of choice in European Radioisotope Power Systems. The University of Leicester have developed a number of systems using this fuel type, including a 200 Wth heat source. To maximise the electrical output that can be generated from the heat source, the University of Leicester and NASA Glenn Research Center have collaborated on a radioisotope Stirling generator concept, building on the long heritage of dynamic power conversion developments at NASA GRC. Here we present the design of a technology demonstrator of the Americium-fuelled Radioisotope Stirling Generator (Am-RSG).

EMU Ag-Zn battery wet-life extension test

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) silver/zinc (Ag/Zn) battery is an 11 cell battery of approximately 30 AH. The Ag/Zn battery is comprised of two 4-cell monoblocks and one 3-cell monoblock. A discussion of a wet-life extension test performed on the battery is given in viewgraph form.
