Semi-automatic development of Payload Operations Control Center software

This report summarizes the current status of CTA's investigation of methods and tools for automating the software development process in NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Code 500. The emphasis in this effort has been on methods and tools in support of software reuse. The most recent phase of the effort has been a domain analysis of Payload Operations Control Center (POCC) software. This report summarizes the results of the domain analysis, and proposes an approach to semi-automatic development of POCC Application Processor (AP) software based on these results. The domain analysis enabled us to abstract, from specific systems, the typical components of a POCC AP. We were also able to identify patterns in the way one AP might be different from another. These two perspectives--aspects that tend to change from AP to AP, and aspects that tend to remain the same--suggest an overall approach to the reuse of POCC AP software. We found that different parts of an AP require different development technologies. We propose a hybrid approach that combines constructive and generative technologies. Constructive methods emphasize the assembly of pre-defined reusable components. Generative methods provide for automated generation of software from specifications in a very-high-level language (VHLL).

Dynamic Airspace Configuration

In air traffic management systems, airspace is partitioned into regions in part to distribute the tasks associated with managing air traffic among different systems and people. These regions, as well as the systems and people allocated to each, are changed dynamically so that air traffic can be safely and efficiently managed. It is expected that new air traffic control systems will enable greater flexibility in how airspace is partitioned and how resources are allocated to airspace regions. In this talk, I will begin by providing an overview of some previous work and open questions in Dynamic Airspace Configuration research, which is concerned with how to partition airspace and assign resources to regions of airspace. For example, I will introduce airspace partitioning algorithms based on clustering, integer programming optimization, and computational geometry. I will conclude by discussing the development of a tablet-based tool that is intended to help air traffic controller supervisors configure airspace and controllers in current operations.

Using Qualified On-Site Nuclear Power Plant Simulators in Human Factors Validations of Control Room Upgrades

Existing commercial nuclear power plants (NPPs) are valuable assets in the infrastructure portfolio of the United States (U.S.) because they safely and reliably generate about 1/5th of all the electricity used. The instrumentation and control (I&C) systems in commercial NPPs are the ‘eyes and ears' of the operator, allowing operators to maintain situation awareness, thereby allowing the plant to operate safely and efficiently for all phases of operation. Because the I&C systems in NPPs are still mostly based on analog technologies, which are reliable but not especially cost-effective, upgrading the existing I&C in com-mercial NPPs to new digital I&C is very important. Furthermore, simulators and simulation are critical human factors engineering tools for this I&C modernization work. NPP control room simulators are essential test beds to simulate normal, abnormal, and emergency operations that allow human factors researchers to safely and realistically evaluate early design phase prototypes of the upgraded digital I&C, and validate final as-built digital I&C systems that have been modernized deployed in NPPs. This paper describes research performed using qualified on-site NPP simulators to perform human factors validations of digital I&C control room upgrades.

Controlling Air Traffic (Simulated) in the Presence of Automation (CATS PAu) 1995: A Study of Measurement Techniques for Situation Awareness in Air Traffic Control

As automated systems proliferate in aviation systems, human operators are taking on less and less of an active role in the jobs they once performed, often reducing what should be important jobs to tasks barely more complex than monitoring machines. When operators are forced into these roles, they risk slipping into hazardous states of awareness, which can lead to reduced skills, lack of vigilance, and the inability to react quickly and competently when there is a machine failure. Using Air Traffic Control (ATC) as a model, the present study developed tools for conducting tests focusing on levels of automation as they relate to situation awareness. Subjects participated in a two-and-a-half hour experiment that consisted of a training period followed by a simulation of air traffic control similar to the system presently used by the FAA, then an additional simulation employing automated assistance. Through an iterative design process utilizing numerous revisions and three experimental sessions, several measures for situational awareness in a simulated Air Traffic Control System were developed and are prepared for use in future experiments.

An Overview of Spacecraft Design for Piloting, Manual Control, and Handling Qualities

This report addresses techniques to make spacecraft more compatible with human operation. Starting at the highest context, the first section addresses general spacecraft piloting and workload, presenting a conceptual framework, the OODA loop, as a tool for improvement. As a subset of general operability, manual control is addressed in the second section. The concept of a spectrum of control, from fully manual to fully automatic, is introduced here, as is rationale for implementing manual control capabilities in modern spacecraft. Summaries of manual control capabilities for Apollo and Space Shuttle are also provided as examples of successful implementations. Successful manual control requires satisfactory handling qualities, and a high level summary of that topic is provided in the third section.

Telerobotic Control of Dexterous Dual-Arm Robots for D and D Operations - 18622

Robotic systems hold the potential to significantly reduce exposure of workers to hazardous environments such as in the deactivation and decommissioning (D and D) of nuclear facilities. Our goal is to enable an operator with minimal training to easily control a remote dual-arm robot to perform demolition tasks with hand tools. We propose a system that combines semi-autonomous coordination of the robot's arms with an intuitive operator interface based on virtual reality (VR) technology. A limb coordination system enables independent control of the robot arms, as well as coupled motion required to hold and manipulate rigid bodies such as reciprocating saws, angle grinders and crow bars. Using a VR head mounted display and stereo video from the robot for situational awareness and tracked VR hand controllers to command robot arm movement, an operator will be able to walk up to the control console, pick up the controllers, engage the manipulators, fly the grippers, grasp a tool with one or both robot arms and easily move them in unison to perform tasks. We present preliminary results using simulation and a physical dual-arm platform based on the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's Modular Prosthetic Limb, an anthropomorphic device that provides hyper-dexterous human-like manipulation capabilities. Anticipated benefits of the robotic system for D and D operations include improved situational awareness, increased mission complexity, and reduced operator training time, workload, and task execution times. Fuel Efficient Speed Optimization for Real-World Highway Cruising

This paper introduces an eco-driving highway cruising algorithm based on optimal control theory that is applied to a conventionally-powered connected and automated vehicle. Thanks to connectivity to the cloud and/or to infrastructure, speed limit and slope along the future route can be known with accuracy. This can in turn be used to compute the control variable trajectory that will minimize energy consumption without significantly impacting travel time. Automated driving is necessary to the implementation of this concept, because the chosen control variables (e.g., torque and gear) impact vehicle speed. An optimal control problem is built up where quadratic models are used for the powertrain. The optimization is solved by applying Pontryagin’s minimum principle, which reduces the problem to the minimization of a cost function with parameters called co-states. The proposed algorithm assumes piecewise constant slopes and speed limits, and it solves the transition vehicle speeds for each junction of such segments. In addition, a method to extract route information from digital maps is presented, which complies with the proposed optimization algorithm. The algorithms are evaluated in simulation, using Autonomie, a simulation tool for vehicle energy consumption modeling. The optimal control trajectory (e.g., torque, gear) is first computed offline. It is then applied in an open-loop fashion in online simulation, using a forward-looking model of the vehicle in Autonomie. Simulation results show over 8% fuel saving for two selected real-world routes.

pystorms: A simulation sandbox for the development and evaluation of stormwater control algorithms

Advances in cyber–physical technologies have enabled real-time sensing and adaptive control of stormwater infrastructure. These smart stormwater systems allow for inexpensive, minimally-invasive stormwater control interventions in lieu of new construction. Importantly, however promising the area of smart stormwater control, there still remain barriers – for experts and novices alike – to access shared tools and methods for investigating, developing, and contributing to it. In an effort to make smart stormwater control research more methodical and accessible, we present pystorms, an open-source Python-based simulation sandbox that facilitates the quantitative evaluation and comparison of control strategies. pystorms consists of a collection of real world-inspired smart stormwater control scenarios on which any number of control strategies can be applied and tested via an accompanying Python programming interface and coupled stormwater simulator. pystorms provides a framework for the rigorous and efficient evaluation of smart stormwater control methodologies across diverse watersheds with only a few lines of code.

CONDUIT: A New Multidisciplinary Integration Environment for Flight Control Development

A state-of-the-art computational facility for aircraft flight control design, evaluation, and integration called CONDUIT (Control Designer's Unified Interface) has been developed. This paper describes the CONDUIT tool and case study applications to complex rotary- and fixed-wing fly-by-wire flight control problems. Control system analysis and design optimization methods are presented, including definition of design specifications and system models within CONDUIT, and the multi-objective function optimization (CONSOL-OPTCAD) used to tune the selected design parameters. Design examples are based on flight test programs for which extensive data are available for validation. CONDUIT is used to analyze baseline control laws against pertinent military handling qualities and control system specifications. In both case studies, CONDUIT successfully exploits trade-offs between forward loop and feedback dynamics to significantly improve the expected handling, qualities and minimize the required actuator authority. The CONDUIT system provides a new environment for integrated control system analysis and design, and has potential for significantly reducing the time and cost of control system flight test optimization.

Computational Math Problems for a Clean Energy Future

Cutting edge computational mathematics are ubiquitous in renewable energy research. Problems in resilient and reliable electric grid operations, infrastructure planning, wind farm yaw control, and more demand sophisticated and scalable computational tools that enable the transition of renewable energy technologies from proof of concept to deployment into our energy system. The mission of the Computational Science Center at NREL is to lead the lab's efforts to solve energy challenges using high-performance computing (HPC), computational science, applied mathematics, scientific data management, visualization, and informatics. In this poster, we provide a short overview of three areas of computational mathematics research at NREL: wind power scenario generation for stochastic grid operations and infrastructure planning, improved rational function approximations for electromagnetic transients codes, and wind farm yaw control using a combination of the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and reinforcement learning (RL). Increasing penetrations of renewable energy into power grids motivate the investigation of new approaches to characterizing uncertainty for five-minute economic dispatch problems. Similarly, as the penetration of distributed energy resources on power grids increases, it becomes important to revisit our methods of modelling transient phenomena, i.e. electromagnetic transients programs. Finally, the combination of ADMM and RL for wind farm yaw control presented here can potentially increase the efficiency of the deployed distributed controllers by orders of magnitude.

Terminal - Tactical Separation Assured Flight Environment (T-TSafe)

The Tactical Separation Assured Flight Environment (TSAFE) has been previously tested as a conflict detection and resolution tool in the en-route phase of flight. Fast time simulations of a terminal version of this tool called Terminal TSAFE (T-TSAFE) have shown promise over the current conflict detection tools. It has shown to have fewer false alerts (as low as 2 per hour) and better prediction to conflict time than Conflict Alert. The tool will be tested in the simulated terminal area of Los Angeles International Airport, in a Human-in-the-loop experiment to identify controller procedures and information requirements. The simulation will include comparisons of T-TSAFE with NASA's version of Conflict Alert. Also, some other variables such as altitude entry by the controller, which improve T-TSAFE's predictions for conflict detection, will be tested. T-TSAFE integrates features of current conflict detection tools such as Automated Terminal Proximity Alert used to alleviate compression errors in the final approach phase. Based on fast-time simulation analysis, the anticipated benefits of T-TSAFE over Conflict Alert include reduced false/missed alerts and increased time to predicted loss of separation. Other metrics that will be used to evaluate the tool's impact on the controller include controller intervention, workload, and situation awareness.

Dynamic analysis of space structures including elastic, multibody, and control behavior

The problem is to develop analysis methods, modeling stategies, and simulation tools to predict with assurance the on-orbit performance and integrity of large complex space structures that cannot be verified on the ground. The problem must incorporate large reliable structural models, multi-body flexible dynamics, multi-tier controller interaction, environmental models including 1g and atmosphere, various on-board disturbances, and linkage to mission-level performance codes. All areas are in serious need of work, but the weakest link is multi-body flexible dynamics.

Imaging Strain-Localized Single-Photon Emitters in Layered GaSe below the Diffraction Limit

Nanoscale strain control of exciton funneling is an increasingly critical tool for the scalable production of single photon emitters (SPEs) in two-dimensional materials. However, conventional far-field optical microscopies remain constrained in spatial resolution by the diffraction limit and thus can provide only a limited description of nanoscale strain localization of SPEs. Here, we quantify the effects of nanoscale heterogeneous strain on the energy and brightness of GaSe SPEs on nanopillars with correlative cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence, and atomic force microscopy, supported by density functional theory simulations. We report the strain-localized SPEs have a broad range of emission wavelengths from 620 to 900 nm. We reveal substantial strain-controlled SPE wavelength tunability over a ~100 nm spectral range and 2 orders of magnitude enhancement in the SPE brightness at the pillar center due to Type-I exciton funneling. In addition, we show that radiative biexciton cascade processes contribute to observed CL photon superbunching. Also, the GaSe SPEs show excellent stability, where their properties remain unchanged after electron beam exposure. Importantly, we anticipate that this comprehensive study on the nanoscale strain control of two-dimensional SPEs will provide key insights to guide the development of truly deterministic quantum photonics.

The Robonaut 2 Hand - Designed to do Work with Tools

The second generation Robonaut hand has many advantages over its predecessor. This mechatronic device is more dexterous and has improved force control and sensing giving it the capability to grasp and actuate a wider range of tools. It can achieve higher peak forces at higher speeds than the original. Developed as part of a partnership between General Motors and NASA, the hand is designed to more closely approximate a human hand. Having a more anthropomorphic design allows the hand to attain a larger set of useful grasps for working with human interfaces. Key to the hand s improved performance is the use of lower friction drive elements and a redistribution of components from the hand to the forearm, permitting more sensing in the fingers and palm where it is most important. The following describes the design, mechanical/electrical integration, and control features of the hand. Lessons learned during the development and initial operations along with planned refinements to make it more effective are presented.

Development of a simplified calibrated building simulation model of a supermarket for proposed ECMs and control strategies impact evaluation

Calibrated building energy simulation is an important pathway to more energy-efficient buildings, but the information requirements of some approaches to this problem are significant. This is particularly true for supermarkets and other so-called “big-box” retail stores. Another characteristic of supermarkets is the significant interaction between Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems in these buildings. These buildings could contain a wide variety of systems and a degree of load diversity that makes calibrated modeling a challenge. This paper describes a simplified approach that uses OpenStudio and EnergyPlus to combine known building parameters with “typical” parameters, resulting in a simplified building that is amenable to calibration. This approach was applied to a big-box store located in Nashville, Tennessee, and a calibrated model was obtained that was used to study potential energy conservation measures. Further, the paper also explores the capabilities of whole-building energy modeling tools, such as EnergyPlus, for modeling the HVAC controls and sequences and their impact evaluation. Although some measures are precluded by the model simplicity, several measures were found to improve the efficiency of the model and demonstrate that the simplified modeling approach is effective. Practical Application: This paper introduces a hybrid approach of building energy model calibration using limited information available from the actual building in combination with characteristics of a “typical” building of the same type. This hybrid approach would also be applicable for other building types than discussed in this paper to calibrate the building energy model using limited information from the actual building.

BETO 2021 Peer Review: Algae Biotechnology Partnership - Technology Area Session: Advanced Algae Systems

Development of advanced genetic and genomic tools for targeted algal metabolic engineering pursuits will be integral to achieving target biomass productivity and, ultimately, the BETO goal of cost-competitive biofuels derived from algal biomass by 2022. However, at present, broad-host-range tool development is currently hindered by strain-specific negative regulatory mechanisms. Indeed, the biological processes controlling algal transcription and translation are subject to complex host regulation, which often presents hurdles for targeted genetic engineering strategies. Advanced genetic approaches offer a means to rewire these regulatory systems and/or introduce novel functionality into algal biocatalysts. Synthetic systems biology approaches also present a means to construct novel genetic regulatory networks and rewire natural biological systems to establish an “orthogonal central dogma,” wherein non-native control elements are introduced into or evolved in host microbes for bypass of host control. To this end, the Algae Biotechnology Partnership aims to develop advanced genetic editing tools and synthetic and orthogonal genetic regulatory systems to enable universal metabolic engineering strategies in top-candidate deployment algal strains. Successful development will ultimately open the door for targeted strain-engineering strategies, aimed at maximizing algal outdoor biomass production, composition, and strain robustness.
