Sodium Sulfur Battery Cell Experiment (NaSBE)

The Ford Motor Company published papers describing new types of secondary battery comprised of: solid, sodium ion conducting electrolyte; liquid metal electrode; redox electrode; operating temperature between 300 and 400 deg. C; specific energy of 150 Wh/kg; and a nominal voltage of 2.0 V.

Advances in Tactical Rocket Propulsion

An AGARD Colloquium on 'Progress in Tactical Rocket Propulsion' was held at La Jolla, California, on April 22 and 23, 1965. The unclassified papers, or unclassified versions of classified papers, presented at this meeting form the contents of the present AGARD conference proceedings, which has been identified by a new title that reflects more properly the scope of the remaining technical papers. The articles contained in this volume represent significant evaluations of the status of solid-propellant, liquid-propellant and hybrid-propellant rocket development. Together with the reviews, they should provide a useful reference source for research workers and students alike.

STS lithium/CF(x) battery

Lithium carbon fluoride batteries are used on Space Shuttle Rocket Boosters and external tanks. These batteries have been extremely successful in terms of mission reliability with the exception of cell yield variances. The function/system and battery descriptions are given. A description is given of the battery range safety system.

Battery charge regulator is coulometer controlled

Coulometer controlled battery charge regulator controls nickel/cadmium type primary cells used in space applications. The use of the coulometer as an ampere hour measuring device permits all available current to go to the battery until full charge state is reached, at which time the charge rate is automatically reduced.

Intelsat-V: Nickel-hydrogen battery

A design program for the development of a nickel hydrogen battery is described. The design and design advantages of the battery are discussed. The general characteristics of the battery such as the strain gage cell pressure monitoring and the automatic low temperature heater control are reported along with the performance characteristics.

Remote sensing of hurricane waves

A program was undertaken to obtain data on wind generated ocean waves in hurricanes by remote sensing techniques. The sensor, a synthetic aperture radar, has collected the first data ever on the directional wave climate throughout a hurricane. This information was found to have inconsistencies with present hurricane wave generation models.

SMM parallel battery operation in orbit

A parallel battery system for the SMM spacecraft is described. The battery system performance as a function of lifetime over orbit was evaluated. The following equipment performance specifications were examined during a typical orbit: battery current and discharges, voltage limitations, battery temperature variations, and current sensor performance. Tabulated battery performance data is also included.

Al/Cl2 molten salt battery

Molten salt battery has been developed with theoretical energy density of 5.2 j/kg (650 W-h/lb). Battery, which operates at 150 C, can be used in primary mode or as rechargeable battery. Battery has aluminum anode and chlorine cathode. Electrolyte is mixture of AlCl3, NaCl, and some alkali metal halide such as KCl.

Proceedings of the Second Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium

The 2nd Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium, held at the University of Santa Clara on May 4-5, 1967, was sponsored by the University of Santa Clara, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. The Symposium brought together approximately 200 representatives of more than 50 organizations concerned with mechanisms for use in space.

Measurement of Interfacial Tension of Immiscible Liquid Pairs in Microgravity

A discussion is given of a containerless microgravity experiment aimed at measuring the interfacial tension of immiscible liquid pairs using a compound drop rotation method. The reasons for the failure to execute such experiments in microgravity are described. Also, the results of post-flight analyses used to confirm our arguments are presented.

A new lead-acid battery for high pulse power applications

The development of new electronically conductive materials which can withstand the environment of the positive plates has made possible the construction of a high pulse power sealed bipolar lead-acid battery. The new battery is described and its advantages over other electrochemical systems are outlined. Performance projections show that the peak specific power of the battery can be as high as 90 kW/kg, and that a specific power of 5 kW/kg can be sustained over several thousand pulses.

Charge retention test experiences on Hubble Space Telescope nickel-hydrogen battery cells

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) nickel-hydrogen battery module was designed by Lockheed Missile & Space Co (LMSC) and manufactured by Eagle-Picher Ind. (EPI) for the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) as an Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) for the nickel-cadmium batteries originally selected for this low earth orbit mission. The design features of the HST nickel hydrogen battery are described and the results of an extended charge retention test are summarized.
