Computer-Aided Modeling and Analysis of Power Processing Systems (CAMAPPS), phase 1

The large-signal behaviors of a regulator depend largely on the type of power circuit topology and control. Thus, for maximum flexibility, it is best to develop models for each functional block a independent modules. A regulator can then be configured by collecting appropriate pre-defined modules for each functional block. In order to complete the component model generation for a comprehensive spacecraft power system, the following modules were developed: solar array switching unit and control; shunt regulators; and battery discharger. The capability of each module is demonstrated using a simplified Direct Energy Transfer (DET) system. Large-signal behaviors of solar array power systems were analyzed. Stability of the solar array system operating points with a nonlinear load is analyzed. The state-plane analysis illustrates trajectories of the system operating point under various conditions. Stability and transient responses of the system operating near the solar array's maximum power point are also analyzed. The solar array system mode of operation is described using the DET spacecraft power system. The DET system is simulated for various operating conditions. Transfer of the software program CAMAPPS (Computer Aided Modeling and Analysis of Power Processing Systems) to NASA/GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center) was accomplished.

Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA): Assessment of the electrical power generation/power reactant storage and distribution subsystem FMEA/CIL

The results of the Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA) of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Critical Items List (CIL) is presented. The IOA effort first completed an analysis of the Electrical Power Generation/Power Reactant Storage and Distribution (EPG/PRSD) subsystem hardware, generating draft failure modes and potential critical items. To preserve independence, this analysis was accomplished without reliance upon the results contained within the NASA FMEA/CIL documentation. The IOA results were then compared to the NASA FMEA/CIL baselines with proposed Post 51-L updates included. A resolution of each discrepancy from the comparison is provided through additional analysis as required. The results of that comparison are documented for the Orbiter EPG/PRSD hardware. The comparison produced agreement on all but 27 FMEAs and 9 CIL items. The discrepancy between the number of IOA findings and NASA FMEAs can be partially explained by the different approaches used by IOA and NASA to group failure modes together to form one FMEA. Also, several IOA items represented inner tank components and ground operations failure modes which were not in the NASA baseline.

Reversible thermodynamic cycle for AMTEC power conversion

The thermodynamic cycle appropriate to an AMTEC (alkali metal thermal-to-electric converter) cell is discussed for both liquid- and vapor-fed modes of operation, under the assumption that all processes can be performed reversibly. In the liquid-fed mode, the reversible efficiency is greater than 89.6 percent of Carnot efficiency for heat input and rejection temperatures (900-1300 K and 400-800 K, respectively) typical of practical devices. Vapor-fed cells can approach the efficiency of liquid-fed cells. Quantitative estimates confirm that the efficiency is insensitive to either the work required to pressurize the sodium liquid or the details of the state changes associated with cooling the low pressure sodium gas to the heat rejection temperature.

Investigation of alternate power source for Space Shuttle Orbiter hydraulic system

This investigation consists of a short-term feasibility study to determine whether or not an alternate electrical power source would trade favorably from a performance, reliability, safety, operation, and weight standpoint in replacing the current auxiliary power unit subsystems with its attendant components (water spray boiler, hydrazine fuel and tanks, feed and vent lines, controls, etc.), operating under current flight rules. Results of this feasibility study are used to develop recommendations for the next step (e.g., to determine if such an alternate electrical power source would show an advantage given that the current operational flight mode of the system could be modified in such a way as not to constrain the operational capability and safety of the vehicle). However, this next step is not within the scope of this investigation. This study does not include a cost analysis, nor does it include investigation of the integration aspects involved in such a trade, except in a qualitative sense for the determination of concept feasibility.

Biocybernetic system evaluates indices of operator engagement in automated task

A biocybernetic system has been developed as a method to evaluate automated flight deck concepts for compatibility with human capabilities. A biocybernetic loop is formed by adjusting the mode of operation of a task set (e.g., manual/automated mix) based on electroencephalographic (EEG) signals reflecting an operator's engagement in the task set. A critical issue for the loop operation is the selection of features of the EEG to provide an index of engagement upon which to base decisions to adjust task mode. Subjects were run in the closed-loop feedback configuration under four candidate and three experimental control definitions of an engagement index. The temporal patterning of system mode switching was observed for both positive and negative feedback of the index. The indices were judged on the basis of their relative strength in exhibiting expected feedback control system phenomena (stable operation under negative feedback and unstable operation under positive feedback). Of the candidate indices evaluated in this study, an index constructed according to the formula, beta power/(alpha power + theta power), reflected task engagement best.

Optimizing the Super H-mode pedestal to improve performance and facilitate divertor integration

Access to Super H-mode is demonstrated for moderately shaped plasmas in agreement with EPED predictions. In particular, Super H-mode is realized in a DIII-D shape that is accessible to the JET tokamak. The reduced triangularity of the JET-compatible shape compared to previous Super H-mode plasma shapes does not prevent deep ascension into the so-called Super H-mode “channel”. Operationally, access is enabled and optimized by a delaying the neutral beam power injection and thus protracting the L-H transition. In highly shaped DIII-D plasmas, the injection of nitrogen sufficient for the establishment of a radiative divertor by is shown to be possible during Super H-mode without pedestal degradation. Here, due to its increased stored energy and radiative divertor integration capabilities, the Super H-mode is a promising candidate as operating regime for JET, ITER and future fusion reactors.

The effects of rain on system performance for the NASA 30/20 GHz Experimental Satellite

A 30/20 GHz Experimental Communications Satellite System is presently under study by NASA to evaluate system technology and high data rate multi-beam communications techniques. In this paper the expected system performance for the 30/20 GHz Satellite is presented, for both trunking and customer premise service (CPS) modes, with particular emphasis on the effects of severe rain events on link reliability. A rain attenuation prediction model technique is described and path and two-way link availabilities are developed for the various modes of operation. The results indicate that acceptable link availabilities can be expected on the 30/20 GHz system for both the trunking and CPS modes, and the experimental satellite system can form the basis for verification of system performance for operational 30/20 GHz systems.

Supervisory telerobotics testbed for unstructured environments

A telerobotics testbed for performing tasks such as assembly and repair of spacecraft in unstructured environments is described. This fully operational multiarm system can operate in teleoperated or supervisory control modes, as well as mixed shared-control modes, thus enabling operations in totally to partially unstructured environments. Various sources of uncertainty are identified and approaches to minimize their effects are presented. In the teleoperated mode, the system uses two force-reflecting hand controllers to operate two manipulator arms. A third arm is utilized to position four cameras to view the scene. In the supervisory mode, the system can be operated from three different levels: task, process, and servo levels, providing different levels of autonomy and performance. Various tools are provided so that an operator can perform tasks even when objects are partially occluded or their positions are not known a priori.

Integrated operation of steady-state long-pulse H-mode in Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak

Recent Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) experiments have successfully demonstrated a long-pulse steady-state scenario with improved plasma performance through integrated operation since the last IAEA FEC in 2016. A discharge with a duration over 100 s using pure radio frequency (RF) power heating and current drive has been obtained with the required characteristics for future long-pulse tokamak reactors such as good energy confinement quality (H 98y2 ~ 1.1) with electron internal transport barrier inside ρ < 0.4, small ELMs (frequency ~100–200 Hz), and good control of impurity and heat exhaust with the tungsten divertor. The optimization of X-point, plasma shape, the outer gap and local gas puffing near the low hybrid wave (LHW) antenna were integrated with global parameters of BT and line-averaged electron density for higher current drive efficiency of LHW and on-axis deposition of electron cyclotron heating in the long-pulse operation. More recently, a high βP RF-only discharge (β P ~ 1.9 and β N ~ 1.5, $\langle$n e $\rangle$/n GW ~ 0.80, f bs ~ 45% at q 95 ~ 6.8) was successfully maintained over 24 s with improved hardware capabilities, demonstrating performance levels needed for the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor steady-state operation. In this work, a higher energy confinement is observed at higher β P and with favorable toroidal field direction. Towards the next goal (≥400 s long-pulse H-mode operations with ~50% bootstrap current fraction) on EAST, an integrated control of the current density profile, pressure profile and radiated divertor will be addressed in the near future.

Coherent Gate Operations in Hybrid Magnonics

Electromagnonics-the hybridization of spin excitations and electromagnetic waves-has been recognized as a promising candidate for coherent information processing in recent years. Among its various implementations, the lack of available approaches for real-time manipulation on the system dynamics has become a common and urgent limitation. In this work, by introducing a fast and uniform modulation technique, we successfully demonstrate a series of benchmark coherent gate operations in hybrid magnonics, including semiclassical analogies of Landau-Zener transitions, Rabi oscillations, Ramsey interference, and controlled mode swap operations. Finally, our approach lays the groundwork for dynamical manipulation of coherent signals in hybrid magnonics and can be generalized to a broad range of applications.

Compact magnetograph

A compact magnetograph system based on solid Fabry-Perot interferometers as the spectral isolation elements was studied. The theory of operation of several Fabry-Perot systems, the suitability of various magnetic lines, signal levels expected for different modes of operation, and the optimal detector systems were investigated. The requirements that the lack of a polarization modulator placed upon the electronic signal chain was emphasized. The PLZT modulator was chosen as a satisfactory component with both high reliability and elatively low voltage requirements. Thermal control, line centering and velocity offset problems were solved by a Fabry-Perot configuration.

Operator-coached machine vision for space telerobotics

A prototype system for interactive object modeling has been developed and tested. The goal of this effort has been to create a system which would demonstrate the feasibility of high interactive operator-coached machine vision in a realistic task environment, and to provide a testbed for experimentation with various modes of operator interaction. The purpose for such a system is to use human perception where machine vision is difficult, i.e., to segment the scene into objects and to designate their features, and to use machine vision to overcome limitations of human perception, i.e., for accurate measurement of object geometry. The system captures and displays video images from a number of cameras, allows the operator to designate a polyhedral object one edge at a time by moving a 3-D cursor within these images, performs a least-squares fit of the designated edges to edge data detected with a modified Sobel operator, and combines the edges thus detected to form a wire-frame object model that matches the Sobel data.
