Nondestructive Evaluation of Composites By Optical Time Domain Reflectometry

Results in the measurement of slowly varying mechanical loading functions on composites using optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) in imbedded optical fiber during both simulated manufacture and use are reviewed. First, the basic theoretical and experimental principles of the OTDR system are described. Next, the mechanical system of the composite and the imbedded fiber is analyzed. Results of measurement obtained for various loading functions applied to material specimens are then described and system limitations on spatial resolution, strain amplitude sensitivity, and frequency response are explained in terms of the range and resolution limits of the OTDR system.

Prevention of Coupled Structure-Propulsion Instability (POGO) On The Space Shuttle

Many liquid-propellant rocket vehicles have experienced longitudinal vibration, nicknamed pogo after the jumping stick, due to an instability arising from interaction of the vehicle structure with the propulsion system. These vibrations can produce an intolerable environment for astronauts and equipment, can overload vehicle structure, and can lead to loss of propulsion performance. A NASA monograph concerned with the prevention of pogo is well on its way toward publication and should serve as a useful guide to design for the Space Shuttle. The paper will briefly describe the nature of the pogo phenomenon, present a summary of past instabilities, relate the possible deleterious effects of pogo, and discuss the contents of the design criteria monograph. Finally, research tasks are recommended for support of pogo development activities on the Space Shuttle.

Processing and Manufacture of Composite Propellants

This paper is a chemical engineering unit processing treatment of the steps involved in the manufacture of solid propellant motors. The author treats the major processes of raw material preparation, mixing, casting and curing by describing equipment, the processing, steps and some engineering considerations associated therewith. The three simultaneous processes occurring within the solid propellant nixing, namely, homogenization, wetting and curing, are discussed in more detail, briefly touching on control of these reactions and the engineering trade-offs among them.

Evaluation of Cycle Life and Characterization of YTP 45 Ah Li-Ion Battery for EMU

Li-ion batteries, with longer cycle life and higher energy density features, are now more and more attractive and applied in multiple fields. The YTP 45 Ah Li-ion battery has been evaluated here and may be employed in EMU in the future. Evaluations were on: (1) Cycle life tests - 500 cycles total (completed 40 cycles in simulated shuttle use mode and 460 cycles in an accelerated use mode, and recorded differential voltage of individual cell in battery); (2) Characterization test - discharge capacity measurement in environment temperature of -10, 25, 50 C before and after 500 cycles; and (3) Thermal testing - charge and discharge at 50 C and -10 C before and after 500 cycles. The battery showed less than a 9% drop of initial discharge capacity and energy within 500 cycles with 475 cycles 59% DOD plus 25 cycles 100% DOD. The EOD voltage ranged from 16.0 to 18.0 V, which fits the requirement for operating the EMU.

In Flight Performance of a Six Ampere-hour Nickel-cadmium Battery in Low Earth Orbit

Flight data for 17,000 orbital cycles are reviewed and summarized. The nickel cadmium battery system operated without failure or abnormality. Battery trend analysis used in determining the feasibility of extending mission life is discussed. The life test data for 20% depth of discharge indicates design life requirements would be reached even at a deeper depth of discharge.

Investigation Into LiCl-LiF+Li 2 O as a Low Temperature Electrolyte in Direct Electrolytic Reduction of UO 2

Direct electrolytic reduction (DER) of UO 2 in a binary LiCl-Li2O (1–3 wt%) at 650 °C has been widely reported. The process temperature can be reduced to 550 °C in theory by using a near eutectic ternary LiCl-LiF+Li 2O (∼2 wt%) electrolyte, which will result in substantial reduction in rate of salt vaporization. The feasibility of using the ternary electrolyte for the process was tested via material compatibility testing, electrochemical polarization testing, and controlled potential or current DER experiments. MgO, Pt, and 625 nickel samples were each contacted with the ternary salt for 168 h. Negligible changes to dimensions and mass of the samples were measured, and concentrations of corrosion products in the salt were 102 ppm or less. O2−oxidation was observed to occur at a lower potential than Cl-or F-on a Pt anode. DER of UO2was performed in six trials. Process variables included type of reference electrode, electrochemical control method, type of cathode basket, and electrolyte composition. UO 2conversion ranged from 28.2 to 99.9 % , and current efficiency ranged from 38 to 52%. Overall, results indicate that the use of the ternary salt is feasible for DER.
