Long-range magnetic order and relaxor ferroelectricity in a hexagonal high-entropy ferrite

Multiferroics that combine ferroelectricity and magnetic order are attractive for electronic and spintronic technologies, yet chemical disorder that promotes relaxor ferroelectricity usually suppresses long-range magnetic order. Here, we report entropy-stabilized relaxor multiferroicity in epitaxial hexagonal (Tb0.2Dy0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2Yb0.2)FeO3 thin films. Structural, magnetic, dielectric, and synchrotron spectroscopic measurements show the coexistence of relaxor ferroelectricity and long-range ferromagnetic order. We find that improper ferroelectricity remains robust against A-site configurational disorder, while the Fe sublattice preserves magnetic exchange. This separation of the microscopic origins of the polar and magnetic responses enables chemically disordered multiferroicity. Our results establish entropy engineering in hexagonal ferrites as a route toward multifunctional oxide thin films and provide a general design strategy for high-entropy multiferroics.

Long‐Life Lithium‐Metal Batteries with an Ultra‐High‐Nickel Cathode and Electrolytes with Bi‐Anion Activity

Abstract Anion chemistry in electrolytes can greatly dictate the nature and quality of passivation layers on both cathode and anode surfaces. This will be more significant when it comes to highly reactive Li‐metal anode and aggressive high‐nickel cathodes. Herein, a competitive bi‐anion activity is found in electrolytes with the co‐existence of two anions, which leads to a controlled Li‐salt decomposition kinetics and entirely favorable interphasial chemistry on both Li‐metal anode and ultrahigh‐nickel cathode. The proposed bi‐anion localized high‐concentration electrolytes are demonstrated to exhibit superior electrochemical compatibility toward Li metal and long‐term cycling stabilities under both 4.4 and 4.6 V in Li‐metal batteries with ultrahigh‐nickel cathode. This study sheds fresh light on dendrite‐free Li‐metal anodes and provides guidance to achieve high‐energy‐density batteries.

Estradiol associations with brain functional connectivity in postmenopausal women

Abstract Objective Previous studies have found that estrogens play a role in functional connectivity in the brain; however, little research has been done regarding how estradiol is associated with functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between estradiol and functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. Methods Structural and blood oxygenation level–dependent resting-state magnetic resonance imaging scans of 88 cognitively healthy postmenopausal individuals were obtained along with blood samples collected the same day as the magnetic resonance imaging to assess hormone levels. We generated connectivity values in CONN toolbox version 20.b, an SPM-based software. Results A regression analysis was run using estradiol level and regions of interest (ROI), including the hippocampus, parahippocampus, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and precuneus. Estradiol level was found to enhance parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left functional connectivity during ROI-to-ROI regression analysis. Estradiol enhanced functional connectivity between the parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left and the precuneus as well as the parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left and parahippocampal gyrus posterior division right. An exploratory analysis showed that years since the final menstrual period was related to enhanced connectivity between regions within the frontoparietal network. Conclusions These results illustrated the relationship between estradiol level and functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. They have implications for understanding how the functioning of the brain changes for individuals after menopause that may eventually lead to changes in cognition and behavior in older ages.

Dopant adsorption as a function of bulk concentration at a near 42º (100) twist grain boundary in SrTiO3

The enrichment of grain boundaries with dopant atoms is of critical importance for the macroscopic physical properties of materials. In thermodynamic equilibrium the Gibbs adsorption isotherm relates grain boundary excess of dopant atoms, their chemical potential in the adjacent bulk, and the respective interface energy. This study has used bicrystals with a near 42º (100) twist grain boundary in SrTiO3 to demonstrate that different kinetic pathways of Fe dopant atom additions converge towards comparable grain boundary configurations. Despite differences in bulk chemical potentials remarkably similar grain boundary excess quantities were observed. The experimental results indicate the general experimental feasibility to establish quantitative relationships between variations of grain boundary energy, interfacial excess, and overall dopant concentration. Improved experimental counting statistics are needed to distinguish solute interface excess as a function of bulk chemical potential.

Role of Matter Interactions in Superradiant Phenomena

The superradiant phenomenon, usually described by the Dicke model, is a hallmark of strong light-matter interaction. Here, we explore how matter-matter interactions influence this phenomenon by performing ground-state simulations of Dicke-like models with both isotropic and anisotropic interactions. We find that Ising-type interactions produce two qualitatively distinct phase boundaries, one of which gives rise to an antiferromagnetic-normal phase connected to the superradiant regime via a first-order phase transition. Under anisotropic couplings, we uncover a strongly correlated phase where in-plane spin order coexists with superradiance, exhibiting sublinear scaling of the photon occupation per site and power-law decay of spin correlations. Furthermore, superradiance is strengthened by tuning either isotropic or anisotropic interactions, highlighting the role of intrinsic many-body correlations in shaping light-matter quantum phases.

Magnetism and magnetoelastic effect in the two-dimensional van der Waals multiferroic CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6

Here, we report a magnetic and neutron diffraction study on the ground state magnetism and field evolution of single-crystal van der Waals multiferroic CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6 . The ordered moments align along the 𝑏 axis in the "𝐴-type" antiferromagnetic configuration with a spin-flop transition along the same direction. Field application along 𝑎 introduces a smooth transition to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state via in-plane spin rotation. These findings resolve the ambiguity of the ground state magnetization direction in CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6 and uncover its field responses, providing a firm basis for future magnetoelectric study. A magnetoelastic coupling effect connecting the interlayer spacing and the magnetic order was further revealed, highlighting the out-of-plane strain as an effective control knob for tuning magnetism both in this system and in related van der Waals magnets.

Ion Transport in Concentrated Crosslinked Solid Polymer Electrolytes

Crosslinking polymers is a common approach to create mechanically stable solid materials such as polymer electrolytes for lithium batteries. In conventional liquid electrolytes, the solvent molecules move freely to accommodate the field-induced motion of ions. However, in crosslinked polymer electrolytes, the rearrangement of polymer segments is constrained by the deformation limits of the network. Herein, we develop a new transport model that accounts for both the formation of concentration gradients and the elasticity of the electrolyte. The elasticity is incorporated by adding an additional term related to the entropy of crosslinked strands to the electrochemical potential of the salt. The resulting Crosslink Model contains two adjustable parameters: $\mathcal{N}$, the average number of monomers in a strand, and λ crit , the maximum strain the network can sustain. These solid-like constraints produce singularities in the governing transport equations, fundamentally altering the concentration profiles. Plateaus in salt concentrations emerge near the electrodes, and network elasticity introduces a strain overpotential. When compared to a Baseline Model ($\mathcal{N}$ → ∞, equivalent to concentrated solution theory), which predicts steepest gradients near the electrodes, both models yield similar current–voltage relationships. Model predictions are compared to electrochemical data for a poly(ethylene oxide)-based crosslinked polymer electrolyte.

Hierarchical Multi-agent Large Language Model Reasoning for Autonomous Heterogeneous Catalyst Discovery

Artificial intelligence is reshaping scientific exploration, but most methods automate procedural tasks without engaging in scientific reasoning, limiting autonomy in discovery. We demonstrate that hierarchical agentic large language model reasoning can efficiently drive simulation and scientific exploration. Across two chemical applications, CO adsorption on Cu surface transition metal adatoms and on M–N–C catalysts, reasoning-guided exploration reduces required atomistic simulations by up to 90% relative to heuristic or random selection. Comparisons across single-agent, multi-agent, and stochastic baselines show that hierarchical strategies yield more coherent and information-efficient search trajectories. Reasoning traces reveal chemically grounded decisions that cannot be explained by semantic bias or stochastic sampling. We realize these agentic reasoning strategies in Materials Agents for Simulation and Theory in Electronic-structure Reasoning (MASTER), a multimodal system that translates natural language into density functional theory workflows. Altogether, multi-agent collaboration accelerates heterogeneous catalyst discovery and marks a step toward more autonomous, reasoning-guided scientific exploration.

Thermal partition function of $$ {J}_3{\overline{J}}_3 $$ deformed AdS3

Abstract We derive a compact formula for the one-loop, bosonic string partition function of Euclideanized$$ {J}_3{\overline{J}}_3 $$ J 3 J ¯ 3 deformedAdS 3 with periodic Euclidean time as an integral transform of the partition function of the undeformed EuclideanizedAdS 3 . Such a deformation is interpretable as an irrelevant “single-trace$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformation” of the boundary. We will do this by first establishing a formal procedure to compute a worldsheet torus zero point function for an exactly marginal$$ J\overline{J} $$ J J ¯ deformation of a sigma model with U(1) L × U(1) R global symmetry. We then describe how this procedure is implemented on SL(2,R) sigma model and its Euclidean continuation. Finally, we describe the embedding of the deformed SL(2,R) torus amplitude into critical string theory and interpret the result as the leading perturbative contribution to the thermal partition function of the deformed theory.

Stabilization Of The CN 3 5− Anion In Recoverable High‐pressure Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) Oxoguanidinates

Abstract A series of isostructural Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN 3 5− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. The stabilization of the CN 3 5− guanidinate anion at ambient conditions provides new opportunities in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry.

Chiral edge state control of thermoelectric effects

Thermoelectric responses in two-dimensional electron gases subjected to magnetic fields have the potential to provide unique information about quasiparticle statistics. In this study, we show that chiral edge states play a key role in thermoelectric Hall bar measurements by completely controlling the direction of the internal thermal gradient. To this end, we perform measurements of the magnetothermoelectric responses of cadmium arsenide quantum wells. The magnetothermoelectric responses in the quantum Hall regime agree with theoretical predictions if one considers the role of chiral edge states, which flow in opposite directions on either side of the Hall bar and establish an internal temperature gradient that is perpendicular to the externally applied thermal gradient. We show that the results are self-consistent within this picture under different measurement conditions. We discuss potential applications of the findings, such as in nanoscale control of local temperature gradients and thermoelectric effects along with the characterization of other topological systems with chiral edges states.

Unraveling interphase-driven failure pathways in LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/graphite pouch cells

LiMnxFe1−xPO4 (LMFP) is a promising high-voltage, thermally stable, and earth-abundant cathode material, yet its practical application is limited by interphase instability and Mn dissolution. In this work, we systematically evaluate LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/graphite pouch cells using three electrolyte formulations including control carbonate electrolyte, control + 2 wt% vinylene carbonate (VC), and control + 2 wt% VC + 1 wt% 1,3,2-dioxathiolane 2,2-dioxide (DTD), to establish how electrolyte composition governs interphase chemistry and long-term degradation. Electrochemical testing shows that both additives are preferentially reduced prior to ethylene carbonate (EC) during cell formation, generating robust cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers that suppress gas evolution and raise the first-cycle coulombic efficiency to 89.3%. Additionally, the dual-additive electrolyte delivers the most stable performance, retaining over 85% capacity after 600 cycles while minimizing impedance growth under long-term cycling at C/3 and 40 °C. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirms that VC + DTD effectively suppresses electrolyte oxidation at the cathode surface, and micro-X-ray fluorescence shows substantially reduced Mn dissolution and deposition on the graphite anode. Density functional theory simulations further provided insights into the structural and energetic influences of alkoxide species on the cathode surface, proposing a Mn2+ extraction mechanism. The combined experimental and computational findings establish a mechanistic link between electrolyte composition and interphase evolution, highlighting the effectiveness of electrolyte engineering for extending the operational lifetime of LMFP-based lithium-ion batteries.

Electronegativity-Guided Site Differentiation in High-Entropy Alloy for pH-universal Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Enhancing the intrinsic activity of transition metal catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a critical challenge in sustainable energy conversion. Herein, we report an electronegativity-guided site differentiation strategy in a single-phase CoNiCuMoW high-entropy alloy (HEA) via electrodeposition by incorporating high-electronegativity 4d/5d orbital transition metals (Mo, W) into the face-centered cubic (fcc) matrix (CoNiCu). The as-synthesized HEA demonstrates exceptional HER performance in all pH conditions, delivering an outstanding overpotential of 65 mV (alkaline), 28 mV (acidic), and 155 mV (neutral) at a current density of 100 mA cm−2, showing performance comparable to commercial Pt/C and has excellent long-term stability at high current density (1 A cm−2, 1000 h). X-Ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the incorporation of Mo/W simultaneously alters the local coordination environment and induces element-dependent charge redistribution, accompanied by a system-level d-band center downshift, thereby optimizing the hydrogen binding strength across multimetallic sites. Meanwhile, oxophilic Mo/W sites lower the water dissociation energy barrier. These synergistic effects collectively enable efficient and durable pH-universal HER performance.

Netload Range Cost Curves for Coordinated Transmission-Distribution Planning Under DER Growth Uncertainty

The increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) requires better coordination between transmission and distribution (T&D) planning to ensure system security and cost efficiency. However, misaligned planning horizons, computational burdens, and privacy concerns hinder effective coordination, leading to either underutilized resources caused by overinvestments or reliability risks due to underinvestment. To address this challenge, we introduce netload range cost curves (NRCCs), a novel approach for managing long-term DER growth uncertainty through T&D coordination, while preserving existing data-sharing and regulatory structures. NRCCs provide pairs of (i) peak substation netload guarantees and (ii) corresponding distribution upgrade options and costs, enabling their seamless integration into transmission planning workflows. To compute NRCCs efficiently, we develop a transmission-aware distribution network planning (TADNP), which is subsequently integrated to an iterative computation procedure. These NRCCs are then embedded into an NRCC-informed transmission planning model to enable resource-efficient coordination. We illustrate our proposed approach with a case study based on realistic distribution and transmission systems in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Our results indicate the possibility of dramatic savings in transmission investments by incorporating the proposed NRCC-integrated T&D coordination framework.
