Battery charge regulator is coulometer controlled

Coulometer controlled battery charge regulator controls nickel/cadmium type primary cells used in space applications. The use of the coulometer as an ampere hour measuring device permits all available current to go to the battery until full charge state is reached, at which time the charge rate is automatically reduced.

ITOS Power System Design

A brief description of the ITOS power systems is presented. The descriptions are from viewgraphs shown to the participants of the Workshop. A block diagram of ITOS power supply subsystem is presented along with graphs representing: ITOS voltage limit versus temperature; and battery charge-discharge current profiles over an orbit period.

A Coaxial Flow Reactor - A Gaseous Nuclear-Rocket Concept

Aspects of a new gaseous nuclear-rocket concept are considered. The principle of this type of cavity reactor is one of maintaining the separation of two coaxial streams - fuel within propellant - rather than attaining the separation of fuel propellant gases within the cavity. An acceptably low uranium consumption rate is possible if the fuel stream can be maintained at an axial velocity which is 1/100 to 1/1000 of the propellant velocity. An elementary hydrodynamic analysis for laminar incompressible flow indicates that the average uranium core velocity may only reach 2 to 11 times the initial core velocity for a typical reactor. The results of a 1-D criticality analysis for a D2O/(235)U system show that the effect of shrinking the fuel region within the reactor cavity is not serious; the effects of moderator heating and structural materials on critical mass are also shown. Overall rocket performance calculations are made for reasonable operating conditions; these results indicate that thrusts from 25,000 to 50,000 pounds and accelerations from 10(exp -1) to 3 g are possible.

Thermal Imaging of Aerospace Battery Cells

The objective of the research covered by this viewgraph presentation is to understand the thermal characteristics of a cylindrical aerospace battery cell by studying the surface thermal properties. The batteries tested include a nickel hydrogen cell (NiH2), and a lithium-ion cell (Li-ion).

Remote sensing of hurricane waves

A program was undertaken to obtain data on wind generated ocean waves in hurricanes by remote sensing techniques. The sensor, a synthetic aperture radar, has collected the first data ever on the directional wave climate throughout a hurricane. This information was found to have inconsistencies with present hurricane wave generation models.

Microprocessor controlled advanced battery management systems

The advanced battery management system described uses the capabilities of an on-board microprocessor to: (1) monitor the state of the battery on a cell by cell basis; (2) compute the state of charge of each cell; (3) protect each cell from reversal; (4) prevent overcharge on each individual cell; and (5) control dual rate reconditioning to zero volts per cell.

Viking lander spacecraft battery

The Viking Lander was the first spacecraft to fly a sterilized nickel-cadmium battery on a mission to explore the surface of a planet. The significant results of the battery development program from its inception through the design, manufacture, and test of the flight batteries which were flown on the two Lander spacecraft are documented. The flight performance during the early phase of the mission is also presented.

An advanced Ni-Cd battery cell design

The evolution of an advanced Ni-Cd space battery cell design continues to prove very promising. High oxygen/hydrogen gas recombination rates (currently up to a C/5 charge rate) and increased electrolyte activation level tolerance (currently up to 5.6 grams Ah of positive capacity) were demonstrated by test. A superior performance, extended life battery cell offering advantages should soon be available for mission applications

Cammatic: an Approach to Improve DSS 13 Antenna Gravity-Loading Performance

Corrective actuator forces are applied to the DSS 13 antenna structure to improve its accuracy. These forces are calibrated according to the antenna elevation requirements. The calibration is derived from accurate field measurements and is not subject to the errors that result from computer modeling. A successful demonstration provided significant antenna surface improvement. An improvement of 0.6 to 1 dB is predicted.

Performance of AEA 80 Ah Battery Under GEO Profile

To date completed three Solar Dynamic Observatory SDO real-time eclipse seasons. Sony 18650HC has a low rate of capacity fade under GEO cycling regime. Real time test results correlate with accelerated GEO lifetest data and AEA capacity fade prediction tool. This data, together with other AEA test data, justify the SDO Project decision to baseline Lithium-Ion chemistry for the spacecraft battery.

NASA battery testbed: A designed experiment for the optimization of LEO battery operational parameters

Simulation of spacecraft battery operation is implemented. Robust design experiment to obtain optimum battery operational parameters is performed. It is found that short term tests using robust design of experiments can provide guidelines for optimum battery operation. It is decided to use robust design approach to provide guidelines for battery operation on current spacecraft in orbit as batteries age (GRO, UARS, EUVE, TOPEX).
