A solid state crossbar switch for automatic analog computer patching

An all-electronic crossbar switch consisting of FET series-shunt switches inside the feedback loops of operational amplifiers was designed and constructed. Time-shared solution of five different differential equations was obtained by using four integrators on ASTRAC 2, with a new solution being generated 250 times per second.

Fault Tolerant Characteristics of Artificial Neural Network Electronic Hardware

The fault tolerant characteristics of analog-VLSI artificial neural network (with 32 neurons and 532 synapses) chips are studied by exposing them to high energy electrons, high energy protons, and gamma ionizing radiations under biased and unbiased conditions. The biased chips became nonfunctional after receiving a cumulative dose of less than 20 krads, while the unbiased chips only started to show degradation with a cumulative dose of over 100 krads. As the total radiation dose increased, all the components demonstrated graceful degradation. The analog sigmoidal function of the neuron became steeper (increase in gain), current leakage from the synapses progressively shifted the sigmoidal curve, and the digital memory of the synapses and the memory addressing circuits began to gradually fail. From these radiation experiments, we can learn how to modify certain designs of the neural network electronic hardware without using radiation-hardening techniques to increase its reliability and fault tolerance.

Generation of electron conical distributions by upper hybrid waves in the earth's polar region

The heating of electron populations through resonant wave-particle interaction with upper hybrid turbulence is examined. It is first demonstrated that upper hybrid waves are easily excited by a population of warm electrons with a loss cone type distribution in a background of cold electron plasma. Quasi-linear theory is then used to show that the upper hybrid turbulence can preferentially heat the warm electrons in the perpendicular direction. In analogy to ion conic formation, this perpendicular heating process is a viable mechanism of generating electron conical distributions observed in the Earth's midaltitude polar regions.

Optical information processing at NASA Ames Research Center

The combination of analog optical processors with digital electronic systems offers the potential of tera-OPS computational performance, while often requiring less power and weight relative to all-digital systems. NASA is working to develop and demonstrate optical processing techniques for on-board, real time science and mission applications. Current research areas and applications under investigation include optical matrix processing for space structure vibration control and the analysis of Space Shuttle Main Engine plume spectra, optical correlation-based autonomous vision for robotic vehicles, analog computation for robotic path planning, free-space optical interconnections for information transfer within digital electronic computers, and multiplexed arrays of fiber optic interferometric sensors for acoustic and vibration measurements.

Low Temperature Testing of a Radiation Hardened CMOS 8-Bit Flash Analog-to-Digital (A/D) Converter

Power processing electronic systems, data acquiring probes, and signal conditioning circuits are required to operate reliably under harsh environments in many of NASA:s missions. The environment of the space mission as well as the operational requirements of some of the electronic systems, such as infrared-based satellite or telescopic observation stations where cryogenics are involved, dictate the utilization of electronics that can operate efficiently and reliably at low temperatures. In this work, radiation-hard CMOS 8-bit flash A/D converters were characterized in terms of voltage conversion and offset in the temperature range of +25 to -190 C. Static and dynamic supply currents, ladder resistance, and gain and offset errors were also obtained in the temperature range of +125 to -190 C. The effect of thermal cycling on these properties for a total of ten cycles between +80 and - 150 C was also determined. The experimental procedure along with the data obtained are reported and discussed in this paper.

What we have learned from the magnetosphere

Three significant discoveries resulting from recent studies of earth's magnetosphere are discussed: (1) the central role of magnetic-field-line reconnection in determining the topology, geometry, and dynamics of the magnetosphere; (2) the realization that auroral arcs result from coupling of solar-wind stresses to the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere; and (3) the role of plasma turbulence in affecting both the microscopic state and macroscopic observables of the magnetospheric plasma. Magnetic-field-line reconnection is described in terms of Dungey's (1961) model of the magnetosphere, a simple picture of magnetic-substorm evolution is outlined, and questions concerning the reconnection rate are considered. The production of aurorae by field-aligned electron beams is examined, and an analogy is made between earth's magnetosphere and that of a pulsar with aligned dipole and spin axes. Plasma-turbulence problems are reviewed which concern anomalously fast electron and proton losses from the Van Allen belts, whistler-electron interactions, and anomalous resistance in auroral arcs. The Pioneer 10 encounter with Jupiter's magnetosphere is briefly noted.

Yields of gamma rays emitted following capture of negative muons by Si28 and Mg24.

Measurement of the yields of specific final states excited in the capture of negative muons by Mg24 and Si28. The yields are compared with the cross sections for excitation of the analog states by 180 deg electron scattering and with the relative populations of levels produced by the decay of the giant-dipole-resonance states.

Chemical and structural studies of 'Brownlee' particles

Several techniques were applied to the study of small particles (around 10 microns) collected in the upper atmosphere by U-2 aircraft. The major element chemistry of roughly 1/3 of the particles is similar to that of chondritic meteorites, although considerable variation of element ratios is observed from particle to particle, and even within a given particle. All particles of 'chondritic' composition are polycrystalline aggregates. About half have fully re-entrant structures; the remaining ones have more compact structures ranging from platey to spherical morphologies. Micro-crystallites with various internal structures are observed in the size range from less than 100 A to several microns. Although tracks are clearly observed in transmission electron microscope examination of terrestrial analog crystals, no tracks of solar flare origin have yet been identified in the U-2 particles. Induced fission track analysis of one aggregate shows that the U concentration is less than 15 ppbm, lending support to the extraterrestrial origin hypothesis.
