JGI Archive and Metadata Organizer (JAMO) v2.0.0

JAMO (JGI Archive and Metadata Organizer) helps researchers keep large collections of scientific files organized, findable, and safe. It lets you submit files with consistent, template-driven metadata, bundle related files into sets, and track them as a group instead of one by one. As data ages, JAMO automatically moves it from fast disk to cost-saving tape and can bring it back when needed, keeping storage lean without losing access. A simple web/CLI workflow supports submitting, checking status, retrying, and updating metadata. Compared with generic storage, JAMO's strengths are: clear, searchable metadata tuned for science; set-level organization that mirrors real projects; and built-in lifecycle care (archive, purge, restore) so you don't have to manage those steps yourself.

PM-HIP Mechanical Data Archive

This is the mechanical testing data archive from a neutron irradiation campaign of nuclear structural alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy with hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP). Data in this archive include uniaxial tensile testing data, fractography of selected tensile bars, and nanoindentation. The irradiation campaign was designed to facilitate a direct comparison of PM-HIP to conventional casting or forging. Five common nuclear structural alloys were included in the campaign: 316L stainless steel, SA508 pressure vessel steel, Grade 91 ferritic steel, and Ni-base alloys 625 and 690. Irradiations were carried out in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to target doses of 1 and 3 displacements per atom (dpa) at target temperatures of 300ºC and 400ºC through the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) project 15-8242.

Skylab Medical Data Center and Archives

The founding of the Skylab medical data center and archives as a central area to house medical data from space flights is described. Skylab program strip charts, various daily reports and summaries, experiment reports and logs, status report on Skylab data quality, raw data digital tapes, processed data microfilm, and other Skylab documents are housed in the data center. In addition, this memorandum describes how the data center acted as a central point for the coordination of preflight and postflight baseline data and how it served as coordinator for all data processing through computation and analysis. Also described is a catalog identifying Skylab medical experiments and all related data currently archived in the data center.

NASA participation in the 1980 PEPE/NEROS project: Data archive

Eight experimental air quality measurement systems were investigated during July and August 1980 as part of the EPA PEPE/NEROS fiel measurement program. Data from those efforts have been entered into an archive that may be accessed by other researchers. The data sets consists of airborne measurements of regional mixed layer heights and aerosol and ozone distributions as well as point measurements of meteorological parameters and ozone obtained during diurnal transitions in the planetary boundary layer. This report gives a discussion of each measurement system, a preliminary assessment of data quality, a description of the archive format for each data set, and a summary of several proposed scientific studies which will utilize these data.

Atlas of Archived Vegetation, Land-use and Seasonal Albedo Data Sets

Global digital data bases of natural vegetation and land use were compiled, for use in climate studies, at 1 deg resolution from over 100 published sources. A series of 6 data sets, derived from the original compilations, was prepared and archived on tape at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) (Matthews, 1984). The first is a vegetation data set representing natural (pre-agricultural) vegetation based on the UNESCO classification system. The second, derived from the land-use compilation, is a cultivation-intensity data set defining the areal extent of presently-cultivated land in the 1 deg cells. The last four are integrated surface-albedo data sets (January, April, July, October) for snow-free conditions, incorporating natural-vegetation and cultivation characteristics from the vegetation and cultivation-intensity data sets. Each of these data sets covers the entire surface of the earth. They include non-zero data for permanent land only, including continental ice; water, including oceans and lakes, is zero. The present report includes maps, presented by continent, of the complete archived data, with the exception of Antarctica.

Archive of observations of periodic comet Crommelin made during its 1983-84 apparition

This is an archive of 680 reduced observations of Periodic Comet Crommelin made during its 1984 apparition. The archive integrates reports by members of the eight networks of the International Halley Watch (IHW) and presents the results of a trial run designed to test the preparedness of the IHW organization for the current apparition of Periodic Comet Halley.

Archival searches for optical counterparts to gamma ray bursters

The results of searches of about 1500 h of archival astronomical plates, taken with a variety of instruments at two observatories are reported. The areas of the sky photographed coincided with the positions of ten recently observed gamma ray bursts. The limiting magnitudes of the plates would in most cases have allowed the detection of the type of optical transients recently observed to be associated with gamma-bursters, although no such transients were found. A simple statistical argument is presented which allows confidence limits to be set for the repetition rates of bursters using these or other archival data.

The preparation and archiving of machine-readable astronomical data

The preparation of machine-readable astronomical catalogs for archiving and distribution from the ADC is described. Examples of specific format and data structure changes to improve compatibility with other computers, to homogenize the presentation of astronomical data among catalogs, and to increase storage efficiency are given. Various checks which are often made to insure internal consistency and for comparison with published versions are identified and the importance of permanently archiving astronomical data in the best possible condition is emphasized.

The ICQ photometric archive for P/Halley and other comets

The International Comet Quarterly (ICQ) archive is introduced. There is still no electronic (e.g., photoelectric photometers, CCDs) means for readily obtaining total visual magnitudes of comets when the coma diameters are greater than 20 arcsec and visual estimates of the total brightness are still the most abundant type of data for comets during the past 100 yr besides astrometric data. The ICQ published greater than 18,000 visual observations of comets made by 600 observers since 1940. What is available, what is accomplished thus far, and potentials and limitations inherent in the ICQ photometric data archive are discussed.

An optical disk archive for a data base management system

An overview is given of a data base management system that can catalog and archive data at rates up to 50M bits/sec. Emphasis is on the laser disk system that is used for the archive. All key components in the system (3 Vax 11/780s, a SEL 32/2750, a high speed communication interface, and the optical disk) are interfaced to a 100M bits/sec 16-port fiber optic bus to achieve the high data rates. The basic data unit is an autonomous data packet. Each packet contains a primary and secondary header and can be up to a million bits in length. The data packets are recorded on the optical disk at the same time the packet headers are being used by the relational data base management software ORACLE to create a directory independent of the packet recording process. The user then interfaces to the VAX that contains the directory for a quick-look scan or retrieval of the packet(s). The total system functions are distributed between the VAX and the SEL. The optical disk unit records the data with an argon laser at 100M bits/sec from its buffer, which is interfaced to the fiber optic bus. The same laser is used in the read cycle by reducing the laser power. Additional information is given in the form of outlines, charts, and diagrams.

The Nimbus 7 LIMS map archival tape

The development of the Langley Map Archival Tape (LAMAT) is described. The role of the Nimbus 7 orbit characteristics in the analysis and interpretation of LAMAT data is discussed. The pressure ranges and heights for the LAMAT components are given and the synoptic fields for each pressure and latitude were modeled as Fourier series in longitude with time-dependent coefficients. Examples of LAMAT temperature fields are presented and the accuracies of the LAMAT fields are evaluated. The fit between the Langley inverted profile archival tape (LAIPAT) and LAMAT is examined by comparing averaged zonal mean fields and standard deviations. Consideration is given to diurnal variations of LAIPAT data, and the time and spatial smoothing of the data.

The archiving of meteor research information

The results obtained over the past years under GLOBMET are not reviewed but some of the problems the solution of which will guide further development of meteor investigation and international cooperation in this field for the near term are discussed. The main attention is paid to problems which the meteor community itself can solve, or at least expedite. Most of them are more or less connected with the problem of information archiving. Information archiving deals with methods and techniques of solving two closely connected groups of problems. The first is the analysis of data and information as an integral part of meteor research and deals with the solution of certain methodological problems. The second deals with gathering data and information for the designing of models of the atmosphere and/or meteor complex and its utilization. These problem solutions are discussed.

Global data bases on distribution, characteristics and methane emission of natural wetlands: Documentation of archived data tape

Global digital data bases on the distribution and environmental characteristics of natural wetlands, compiled by Matthews and Fung (1987), were archived for public use. These data bases were developed to evaluate the role of wetlands in the annual emission of methane from terrestrial sources. Five global 1 deg latitude by 1 deg longitude arrays are included on the archived tape. The arrays are: (1) wetland data source, (2) wetland type, (3) fractional inundation, (4) vegetation type, and (5) soil type. The first three data bases on wetland locations were published by Matthews and Fung (1987). The last two arrays contain ancillary information about these wetland locations: vegetation type is from the data of Matthews (1983) and soil type from the data of Zobler (1986). Users should consult original publications for complete discussion of the data bases. This short paper is designed only to document the tape, and briefly explain the data sets and their initial application to estimating the annual emission of methane from natural wetlands. Included is information about array characteristics such as dimensions, read formats, record lengths, blocksizes and value ranges, and descriptions and translation tables for the individual data bases.

A new photometric correction technique for the IUE final archive

A substantial fraction of the noise in reduced International Ultraviolet Explorer data is shown to result from limitations of the image processing methods used. An improved method for photometrically correcting spectral images that will be used in the IUE final archive processing software is described. An image processed with this photometric correction software is shown to have not only lower noise overall, but none of the periodic changes in noise amplitude. The improvement that is realized through the approach not only solves a long standing difficulty with IUE data reduction techniques, but substantially enhances the quality of the IUE archive.

Optical archiving for scientific data

Write-once-read-many (WORM) optical disk technology is now practical for use as (1) a near online storage media, (2) long-term storage in a passive repository, and (3) under some circumstances, transporting from and to data generators and data users at remote sites. Optical technology provides several significant advantages over magnetic tapes as a data storage media because it is more compact, provides random access, has a longer lifetime, at least 30 years, and is less sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Two major archival projects using optical technology underway are discussed: the Coastal Zone Color Scanner data and the Dynamics Explorer data. Both projects have used the software for optical archive and retrieval (SOAR) to transfer data in a volume format that can be read transparently by VAX/VMS. Through the use of this software technique, (1) data generators and data users do not have to rewrite extant software and (2) the VAX/VMS Files-11 volume format is in wide use, so it can serve as an interim standard and will be accessible in the long-term.

Collecting, analyzing and archiving of ground based infrared solar spectra obtained from several locations

The infrared solar spectrum as observed from the ground under high resolution contains thousands of absorption lines. The majority of these lines are due to compounds that are present in the Earth's atmosphere. Ground based infrared solar spectra contain information concerning the composition of the atmosphere at the time the spectra were obtained. The objective of this program is to record solar spectra from various ground locations, and to analyze and archive these spectra. The analysis consists of determining, for as many of the absorption lines as possible, the molecular species responsible for the absorption, and to verify that current models of infrared transmission match the observed spectra. Archiving is an important part of the program, since a number of the features in the spectra have not been identified. At some later time, when the features are identified, it will be possible to determine the amount of that compound that was present in the atmosphere at the time the spectrum was taken.

Data analysis and archival

The purpose of this task is the acquisition, distribution, archival, and analysis of data collected during and in support of the Upper Atmospheric Research Program (UARP) field experiments. Meteorological and U2 data from the 1984 Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange Project (STEP) was analyzed to determine characteristics of internal atmospheric waves. CDROM's containing data from the 1987 STEP, 1987 Airborne Antarctic Ozone Expedition (AAOE), and the 1989 Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition (AASE) were produced for archival and distribution of those data sets. The AASE CDROM contains preliminary data and a final release is planned for February 1990. Comparisons of data from the NASA ER-2 Meteorological Measurement System (MMS) with radar tracking and radiosonde data show good agreement. Planning for a Meteorological Support Facility continues. We are investigating existing and proposed hardware and software to receive, manipulate, and display satellite imagery and standard meteorological analyses, forecasts, and radiosonde data.

Collection, analysis, and archival of LDEF activation data

Samples intentionally placed aboard the LDEF and samples obtained from the LDEF structure were studied at NASA Marshall and seven national labs to determine the radioactivity produced in orbit. The gamma ray spectra from these studies have provided information concerning the type and quantity of radioactive nuclei produced by various activating particles. The gamma ray spectra, the resulting activation, and the experimental arrangements are being collected at Marshall and Eastern Kentucky Univ. for review, further analysis, and future archival. An overview of this process and the type of information that will be available for future reference is given. This information includes the samples studied, the location of the samples on LDEF, the amount and type of covering material, the types of detector systems, the format of the gamma ray spectra, and the corrections for geometry, self-absorption, detector efficiency, and background needed to obtain accurate specific activations (activation per kilogram) of material. Plans are given as to the archival of the data for such future reference and how other scientific investigators or spacecraft designers can access the data.
