Transition region of the earth's upper mantle

The chemistry of the earth's mantle is discussed using data from cosmochemistry, geochemistry, petrology, seismology, and mineral physics. The chondritic earth, the upper mantle and the 400-km discontinuity, the transition region, lower mantle mineralogy, and surface wave tomography are examined. Three main issues are addressed: (1) whether the mantle is homogeneous in composition or chemically stratified, (2) whether the major element chemistry of the mantle is more similar to upper mantle peridotites or to chondrites, and (3) the nature of the composition of the source region of basalts erupted at midocean ridges.

Results from the Balloon Ozone Intercomparison Campaign (BOIC)

In the Balloon Ozone Intercomparison Campaign (BOIC), several in situ UV absorption photometers, two solar UV absorption photometers, electrochemical sondes, and a mass spectrometer were intercompared in three flight missions. Concurrent data from Umkehr and satellite observations are also intercompared. The National Bureau of Standards provided a 'standard' ozone source for intercomparing the in situ instruments and ground pressure. Preliminary findings indicate that the standard deviation of the sensitivities among 17 instruments against the NBS reference was about 11 percent. These differences appear in flight at the lower levels and change at higher altitudes, indicating height-dependent errors. The difference among five in-situ UV photometers flown together ranged by plus or minus 8 percent during ascent to about 41 km. During float at 42 km, the difference nearly doubled. During descent, the difference decreased to about 4 percent, which is much closer to the expected accuracy of these instruments. Results from UV solar radiometers have been systematically higher than those from UV photometers by 15 to 20 percent - a very important disagreement that needs to be resolved.

The ultraviolet cross-sections of ozone. I. The measurements. II - Results and temperature dependence

Absorption cross-sections of ozone have been measured over the range 230 nm to 350 nm, and for temperatures 200 K to 300 K, with improved photometric accuracy and spectral resolution. These measurements are referred to the cross-section at the 253.65 nm mercury line by the Hearn value (1961), 1147 x 10 to the -20th/sq cm, and show an internal consistency of + or - 1 percent. Tables of ozone absorption cross-section in the ultraviolet have been prepared for intervals of 0.05 nm over the range 245 to 340 nm. at each wavelength entry in the table a set of coefficients has been derived that permits the cross-section to be computed as a function of temperature, between 200 K and 300 K, with an accuracy of 1 percent.

Polyenamines for Films, Coatings, and Adhesives

Easy process makes polymers with good mechanical properties. Synthesis involves Michael-type addition polymerization of two diacetylenic diketones, with various aromatic diamines in m-cresol at 60 to 130 degrees C. Technique provides synthetic route to high-molecular-weight polyenamines with moderate thermal stability and good mechanical properties. Polyenamines produced exhibit potential for use as films, coatings, adhesives, molding compounds, and composite matrices.

Polyenamines from aromatic diacetylenic diketones and diamines

The synthesis and characterization of several polyenamine ketones are discussed wherein conjugated diacetylenic diketones and aromatic diamines are used as a route to the formation of high molecular weight polyenamine ketones which exhibit good mechanical properties and can be cast into creasible films. Typical polymerization conditions involved the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of 1,4- or 1,3-PPPO and a diamine at 60 to 130 C in m-cresol at (w/w) solids content of 8 to 26% for a specified period of time under a nitrogen atmosphere. Novel polyenamine ketones were prepared with inherent viscosities as high as 1.99 dl/g and tough, clear amber films with tensile strengths of 12,400 psi and tensile moduli of 397,000 psi were cast from solutions of the polymers in chloroform. In most cases, the elemental analyses for the polyenamine ketones agree within + or - 0.3% of the theoretical values.

Synthesis of thermally stable polypyrazoles, polypyrimidines and other heteroaromatic polymers

As part of a continuing effort to prepare high performance-high temperature polymers for functional and structural applications, the reactions of aromatic dipropynones with aromatic dihydrazine, aromatic dithiols, and aromatic diamidines to provide polypyrazoles, polyenonesulfides, and polypyrimidines respectively were investigated. During the past year, it was demonstrated that polypyrazoles and polyenonesulfides may be prepared by the proposed procedures. However, the preparation of polypyrimidines was not achieved. The preparation and characterization of some polypyrazolones by reaction or aromatic dihydrazines with an activated diacetylenic diester was achieved.

Results from the Balloon Ozone Intercomparison Campaign (BOIC)

Data from the BOIC which consisted of three balloon missions conducted in Palestine, Texas from June 1983 to March 1984 are presented. The BOIC was to assess the ability to perform ozone measurements from balloon platforms. The accuracy and precision of the various ozone measurement systems, which were composed of a photometer, a mass spectrometer, and solar UV absorption sensors, are evaluated. The ozone observations obtained with the instruments on the three flight missions are analyzed and intercompared. The flight in situ data are also compared to the National Bureau of Standards reference photometer, satellite measurements, and under simulated stratospheric pressure and ozone concentrations.

The melting curve of iron to 250 gigapascals - A constraint on the temperature at earth's center

The melting curve of iron, the primary constituent of earth's core, has been measured to pressures of 250 gigapascals with a combination of static and dynamic techniques. The melting temperature of iron at the pressure of the core-mantle boundary (136 GPa) is 4800 + or - 200 K, whereas at the inner core-outer core boundary (330 GPa), it is 7600 + or - 500 K. A melting temperature for iron-rich alloy of 6600 K at the inner core-outer core boundary and a maximum temperature of 6900 K at earth's center are inferred. This latter value is the first experimental upper bound on the temperature at earth's center, and these results imply that the temperature of the lower mantle is significantly less than that of the outer core.

Heuristic control of the Utah/MIT dextrous robot hand

Basic hand grips and sensor interactions that a dextrous robot hand will need as part of the operation of an EVA Retriever are analyzed. What is to be done with a dextrous robot hand is examined along with how such a complex machine might be controlled. It was assumed throughout that an anthropomorphic robot hand should perform tasks just as a human would; i.e., the most efficient approach to developing control strategies for the hand would be to model actual hand actions and do the same tasks in the same ways. Therefore, basic hand grips that human hands perform, as well as hand grip action were analyzed. It was also important to examine what is termed sensor fusion. This is the integration of various disparate sensor feedback paths. These feedback paths can be spatially and temporally separated, as well as, of different sensor types. Neural networks are seen as a means of integrating these varied sensor inputs and types. Basic heuristics of hand actions and grips were developed. These heuristics offer promise of control dextrous robot hands in a more natural and efficient way.

Applications of elastic-viscoplastic constitutive models in dynamic analyses of crack run-arrest events

Applications of nonlinear techniques to the first series of six HSST wide-plate crack-arrest tests that were performed are described. The experiments include crack initiations at low temperatures and relatively long (20 cm) cleavage propagation phases which are terminated by arrest in high temperature regions. Crack arrest are then followed by ductile tearing events. Consequently, the crack front regions are exposed to wide ranges of strain rates and temperatures.

Blends of an ethynyl terminated imidothioether with ethynyl terminated arylene ether oligomers

An evaluation has been undertaken of blends of a novel ethynyl-terminated imidothioether with Udel P1700 polysulfone and ethynyl-terminated arylene ether oligomers. Good to excellent processability was obtained with these blends using compression molding; the cured blends displayed poor-to-good resistance to chloroform and low-to-moderately high fracture toughness, depending on the blends' crosslink density. The flexural strength and modulus of unidirectional carbon graphite laminates prepared with the blended resins were good.

Polyenamines from aromatic diacetylenic diketones and diamines

The synthesis and characterization of several ployenamine ketones are discussed wherein conjugated diacetylenic diketones and aromatic diamines are used as a route to the formation of high molecular weight polyenamine ketones which exhibit good mechanical properties and can be cast into creasible films. Typical polymerization conditions involved the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of 1,4- or 1,3-PPPO and a diamine at 60°-130° C. in m-cresol at (w/w) solids content of 8-26% for a specified period of time under a nitrogen atmosphere. Novel polyenamine ketones were prepared with inherent viscosities as high as 1.99 dl/g and tough, clear amber films with tensile strengths of 12,400 psi and tensile moduli of 397,000 psi were cast from solutions of the polymers in chloroform. The polymers exhibited T g s as high as 235° C. and weight losses of 14% after aging at 232° C. in circulating air for sixty hours. The specific conditions for the preparation of the various polyenamine ketones are presented in Table I. In most cases, the elemental analyses for the polyenamine ketones, shown in Table II, agree within ±0.3% of the theoretical values.

Paradigmatic error calculations for adaptive finite element approximations of convection dominated flows

New error estimation techniques are described for two-dimensional convection-dominated flows. Examples of applications to linear convection problems are given. The methods are based on discontinuous finite-element techniques. Results show that conventional interpolation methods may lead to gross underestimates of actual error and be inadequate for use in adaptive methods.

Ethynyl-Terminated Imidothioethers And Derived Resins

New toughened epoxies exhibit excellent properties, but temperatures at which used limited. Bismaleimide resins some of base materials being formulated to develop materials used at moderate temperatures. Work conducted on use of acetylenic (ethynyl) group to cross-link and extend chains of oligomers and polymers to obtain materials that perform at high temperatures. Work extended to ethynyl-terminated imidothioethers (ETI's). Tested primarily as adhesives and composite matrices and found to have useful properties in terms of processing, resistance to high temperature, fracture toughness, and resistance to solvents. Also have desirable mechanical properties. Potentially useful for aerospace and nonaerospace applications.

Second order tensor finite element

The results of a research and software development effort are presented for the finite element modeling of the static and dynamic behavior of anisotropic materials, with emphasis on single crystal alloys. Various versions of two dimensional and three dimensional hybrid finite elements were implemented and compared with displacement-based elements. Both static and dynamic cases are considered. The hybrid elements developed in the project were incorporated into the SPAR finite element code. In an extension of the first phase of the project, optimization of experimental tests for anisotropic materials was addressed. In particular, the problem of calculating material properties from tensile tests and of calculating stresses from strain measurements were considered. For both cases, numerical procedures and software for the optimization of strain gauge and material axes orientation were developed.
