Variable speed induction motor operation from a 20-kHz power bus

Induction motors are recognized for their simple rugged construction. To date, however, their application to variable speed or servo drives was hampered by limitations on their control. Induction motor drives tend to be complex and to display troublesome low speed characteristics due in part to nonsinusoidal driving voltages. A technique was developed which involves direct synthesis of sinusoidal driving voltages from a high frequency power bus and independent control of frequency and voltages. Separation of frequency and voltage allows independent control of rotor and stator flux, full four quadrant operation, and instantaneous torque control. Recent test results, current status of the technology, and proposed aerospace applications will be discussed.

Thermal design of the Galileo bus and Retro Propulsion Module

The Galileo spacecraft (S/C) consists of an Orbiter and Probe which have instruments to investigate the chemical composition and physical state of Jupiter's atmosphere, the Jovian satellites and the structure and physical dynamics of the Jovian magnetosphere. Galileo was at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) preparing for a May 1986 launch at the time of the Challenger accident. The delay and an incraease in mission time has decreased the Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator power output significantly. A change to the Inertial Upper Stage from the more powerful Centaur G-Prime has resulted in a trajectory that requires gravity assists once by Venus and twice by earth. The resulting peak solar intensity of this roundabout trajectory is more than twice the previous design value for the direct trajectory. Galileo was returned to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from KSC in February 1987 to begin the rework of the S/C thermal design. Verification of the thermal redesign was completed in the JPL 25' space simulator in August and November of 1988. This paper summarizes the thermal design and redesign of the Bus and Retro Propulsion Model.

Pegasus (trademark) launch operations and the PegaStar integrated spacecraft bus

The Pegasus air launched space booster, which successfully flew its maiden flight on 5 Apr. 1990, provides the international satellite community with a flexible cost effective means for delivering small payloads into low Earth orbit. The vehicle's simple, robust design and horizontal integration methods ensure maximum reliability and significantly reduce launch base infrastructure requirements. The vehicle's air launched approach and ability to launch over open ocean regions provide unmatched flexibility in launch location and approach used to ensure range safety. The PegaStar integrated spacecraft bus, which complements the Pegasus launch system, can provide a turnkey means for delivering instrument and sensor packages into low Earth orbit and providing extended (5 to 10 year) on orbit operational support. Pegasus and PegaStar are described, including payload interfaces, delivery capability; integration methods, facility and ground support equipment requirements; and typical launch operations.

A Thermal Expert System (TEXSYS) development overview - AI-based control of a Space Station prototype thermal bus

A knowledge-based control system for real-time control and fault detection, isolation and recovery (FDIR) of a prototype two-phase Space Station Freedom external thermal control system (TCS) is discussed in this paper. The Thermal Expert System (TEXSYS) has been demonstrated in recent tests to be capable of both fault anticipation and detection and real-time control of the thermal bus. Performance requirements were achieved by using a symbolic control approach, layering model-based expert system software on a conventional numerical data acquisition and control system. The model-based capabilities of TEXSYS were shown to be advantageous during software development and testing. One representative example is given from on-line TCS tests of TEXSYS. The integration and testing of TEXSYS with a live TCS testbed provides some insight on the use of formal software design, development and documentation methodologies to qualify knowledge-based systems for on-line or flight applications.

A real time data acquisition system using the MIL-STD-1553B bus

A flight digital data acquisition system that uses the MIL-STD-1553B bus for transmission of data to a host computer for control law processing is described. The instrument, the Remote Interface Unit (RIU), can accommodate up to 16 input channels and eight output channels. The RIU employs a digital signal processor to perform local digital filtering before sending data to the host. The system allows flexible sensor and actuator data organization to facilitate quick control law computations on the host computer. The instrument can also run simple control laws autonomously without host intervention. The RIU and host computer together have replaced a similar larger, ground minicomputer system with favorable results.

Command/telemetry bus general specification for the NOAA-OPQ polar orbiting environmental satellites and EUMETSAT polar satellite systems

The document is a reference document in the Instrument Interface Description for NOAA-2000 Instruments (GSFC-S-480-53). The requirements reflect the fact that these instruments must be compatible with a number of different polar orbiting satellite vehicles including the NOAA-OPQ satellites and the EUMETSAT METOP satellites. The instrument payload will interface to the spacecraft via several standardized communication busses. The document defines the multiplex data bus conforming to the MIL-STD-1553B protocol for command and telemetry transfer between a spacecraft system and all instruments.

Alternate assembly sequence databook for the Tier 2 Bus-1 option of the International Space Station

The JSC International Space Station program office requested that SSB prepare a databook to document the alternate space station assembly sequence known as Tier 2, which assumes that the Russian participation has been eliminated and that the functions that were supplied by the Russians (propulsion, resupply, initial attitude control, communications, etc.) are now supplied by the U.S. Tier 2 utilizes the Lockheed Bus-l to replace much of the missing Russian functionality. The space station at each stage of its buildup during the Tier 2 assembly sequence is characterized in terms of of properties, functionality, resource balances, operations, logistics, attitude control, microgravity environment and propellant usage. The assembly sequence as analyzed was defined by JSC as a first iteration, with subsequent iterations required to address some of the issues that the analysis in this databook identified. Several significant issues were identified, including: less than desirable orbit lifetimes, shortage of EVA, large flight attitudes, poor microgravity environments, and reboost propellant shortages. Many of these issues can be resolved but at the cost of possible baseline modifications and revisions in the proposed Tier 2 assembly sequence.

NASA's Involvement in Technology Development and Transfer: The Ohio Hybrid Bus Project

A government and industry cooperative is using advanced power technology in a city transit bus that will offer double the fuel economy, and reduce emissions to one tenth of government standards. The heart of the vehicle's power system is a natural gas fueled generator unit. Power from both the generator and an advanced energy storage system is provided to a variable speed electric motor attached to the rear drive axle. A unique aspect of the vehicle's design is its use of "super" capacitors for recovery of energy during braking. This is the largest vehicle ever built using this advanced energy recovery technology. This paper describes the project goals and approach, results of its system performance modeling, and the status of the development team's effort.
