Comparing Tandem Cell Designs for Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction to Ethylene

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (CO 2 R) is a promising approach for the decentralized production of fuels such as ethylene (C 2 H 4 ). However, the use of Cu, the most efficient metal CO 2 R catalyst for the generation of C 2 H 4 known to date, generally yields a product stream with poor selectivity. In an effort to increase selectivity, the reaction from CO 2 to C 2 H 4 can be broken down into two steps using tandem CO 2 R electrolyzers: formation of CO from CO 2 and subsequent reduction of CO to C 2 H 4 . Here, in this study, we present two novel tandem electrolyzer architectures that closely integrate two cathodes, one for CO generation and one for conversion to C 2 H 4 , while still enabling independent electrical control of the cathodic surfaces. Cathode segmentation in each of these designs also permits the controlled sequencing of mass flow of chemical intermediates in the order of Au to Cu cathode catalysts, in contrast to earlier work relying on uncontrolled, passive diffusion to facilitate the flow of chemical intermediates between catalysts. When comparing the performance of the newly developed electrolyzer cell designs with a dual electrolyzer system, we found that the dual electrolyzer system yields the highest C 2 H 4 faradaic efficiencies (FEs) of 31% and C 2 H 4 concentrations (∼8 mol %). However, a single Cu-containing electrolyzer outperformed all three tandem systems in terms of C 2 H 4 FE (34%). Our findings, enabled by independent control of the two tandem cathode surfaces, indicate that tandem CO 2 R systems need to be evaluated carefully by testing them at various relevant current densities.

Simultaneous removal of C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 6 for C 2 H 4 purification by robust MOFs featuring a high density of heteroatoms

Simultaneous removal of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 from C 2 H 4 streams is of great importance in the petrochemical industry but remains a challenging task. To address this challenge, we have selected three isoreticular MOFs with high stability, low cost, and desirable scale-up ability, namely, MOF-303, MIL-160, and CAU-23 and assessed their potential in simultaneous removal of acetylene and ethane for ethylene purification. Each MOF exhibits desirable C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 6 uptake capacity (>5.5 mmol g –1 and >4 mmol g –1 , respectively), as well as good C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (>2) and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (>1.5). Notably, MOF-303 takes up 4.96 mmol g –1 C 2 H 6 at 298 K and 1 bar, the highest value among the three MOFs, with C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity in the range of 1.55–2.47. MIL-160 possesses a very high C 2 H 2 uptake (9.1 mmol g –1 ) and C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 selectivity, 10.6 (1 : 1, v/v), at 298 K, much higher than those of all other MOFs tested to date for simultaneous removal of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 from C 2 H 4 . The results from breakthrough experiments confirm that all three MOFs demonstrate excellent performance for C 2 H 4 purification in a ternary mixture of C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 (1 : 1 : 1, v/v/v). Here, for MOF-303, MIL-160, and CAU-23, polymer-grade C 2 H 4 up to 0.164, 0.21, and 0.181 mmol g –1 can be obtained from the equimolar ternary mixture in a single separation step from the breakthrough experiment. Additionally, DFT calculations have been performed to further investigate the mechanism of adsorption/separation for C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 .

Constructing a square-like copper cluster to boost C–C coupling for CO 2 electroreduction to ethylene

The CO 2 electroreduction reaction (CO 2 ER) to ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) offers the dual promise of lowering CO 2 emission while storing energy from renewable electricity, for which the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts is of great significance. Herein, by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we designed an electrocatalyst for CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion by anchoring a Cu 5 cluster supported on a MoS 2 monolayer with an S monovacancy (Cu 5 @MoS 2 ). Our results revealed that one Cu atom of the Cu 5 cluster was embedded into the framework of the defective MoS 2 monolayer, while the other four Cu atoms form a square-like island over the substrate surface. Interestingly, the C–C coupling between two *CO species can easily occur on the unique square-like active site with a low kinetic barrier of 0.56 eV to form the key *C 2 O 2 intermediate, which can then be hydrogenated to the C 2 H 4 product with a very low limiting potential (–0.32 eV). Significantly, alkaline conditions (pH = 13) are beneficial to further promote C 2 H 4 synthesis. Finally, our work may offer a new avenue to precisely modulate the structures of Cu clusters for converting CO 2 into high-value target products.
