Wall interference correction improvements for the ONERA main wind tunnels

This paper describes improved methods of calculating wall interference corrections for the ONERA large windtunnels. The mathematical description of the model and its sting support have become more sophisticated. An increasing number of singularities is used until an agreement between theoretical and experimental signatures of the model and sting on the walls of the closed test section is obtained. The singularity decentering effects are calculated when the model reaches large angles of attack. The porosity factor cartography on the perforated walls deduced from the measured signatures now replaces the reference tests previously carried out in larger tunnels. The porosity factors obtained from the blockage terms (signatures at zero lift) and from the lift terms are in good agreement. In each case (model + sting + test section), wall corrections are now determined, before the tests, as a function of the fundamental parameters M, CS, CZ. During the windtunnel tests, the corrections are quickly computed from these functions.

EPA Enviropod. A summary of the use of the Enviropod under a Memorandum of Understanding among EPA Region 8, the State of Utah, and the University of Utah Research Institute

Twenty-three missions were flown using the EPA's panoramic camera to obtain color and color infrared photographs of landslide and flood damage in Utah. From the state's point of view, there were many successes. The biggest single obstacle to smooth and continued performance was unavailable aircraft. The Memorandum of Understanding between the State of Utah, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Center for Remote Sensing and Cartography is included along with forms for planning enviropod missions, for requesting flights, and for obtaining feedback from participating agencies.

Concept for a multiple resolution pushbroom sensor

A general purpose pushbroom sensor will have parameters determined by the needs of the majority of potential users. These parameters may not satisfy the needs of certain users: Agriculture requires a very short return visit interval; cartography requires a very small pixel size; land use and geology would be satisfied with moderate resolution and seasonal return times. The aggregate solution of these needs would produce a sensor with extremely high data rates. A sensor concept is proposed which may meet the combined needs without the extreme data rate. Previously announced in STAR as N82-28735

The future of satellite remote sensing: A worldwide assessment and prediction

A frame-work in which to assess and predict the future prospects for satellite remote sensing markets is provided. The scope of the analysis is the satellite-related market for data, equipment, and services. It encompasses both domestic and international markets and contains an examination of the various market characteristics by market segment (e.g., Federal Government, State and Local Governments, Academic Organizations, Industrial Companies, and Individuals) and primary applications areas (e.g., Geology, Forestry, Land Resource Management, Agriculture and Cartography). The forecasts are derived from an analysis of both U.S. and foreign market data. The evolution and current status of U.S. and Foreign markets to arrive at market growth rates is evaluated. Circumstances and events which are likely to affect the future market development are examined. A market growth scenario is presented that is consistent with past data sales trends and takes into account the dynamic nature of the future satellite remote sensing market. Several areas of current and future business opportunities available in this market are discussed. Specific worldwide forecasts are presented in three market sectors for the period 1980 to 1990.

Planetary geology in the 1980s

The geologic aspects of solar system studies are defined and the goals of planetary geology are discussed. Planetary geology is the study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of matter condensed in the form of planets, satellites, asteroids, and comets. It is a multidisciplinary effort involving investigators with backgrounds in geology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geodesy, cartography, and other disciplines concerned with the solid planets. The report is primarily restricted to the kinds of experiments and observations made through unmanned missions.
