Geochemical assessment of mineral sequestration of carbon dioxide in the midcontinent rift

Abstract This study examines the potential of Midcontinent Rift rocks to facilitate long‐term CO 2 sequestration by providing the necessary Ca and Mg for carbonate mineralization. Surface samples were collected from the Oronto and Bayfield‐Jacobsville Groups around Lake Superior and used for petrography and X‐ray diffraction to determine their mineral composition. Also, X‐ray fluorescence was also used to assess their bulk chemical composition. The samples were then exposed to CO 2 and deionized water in Teflon‐lined vessels at 90°C, and the resulting leachate fluids were analyzed for the cation released during the testing. SEM microscopy was used to examine the samples for potential mineralization of carbonate minerals. The Oronto Group sediments consist primarily of feldspathic to feldspathic lithic arenites with a chlorite‐dominated matrix, and the primary porosity is blocked by calcite and hematite cement. The Bayfield–Jacobsville sequences are porous quartz arenites to feldspathic quartz arenites that do not contain significant accumulation of Ca‐, Mg‐, and Fe‐bearing minerals. The leachate fluids obtained from Oronto Group samples exhibit a maximum Ca release rate (5.2 × 10 −4 mole/cm 2 .day), indicating rapid calcite cement dissolution and increased porosity and permeability. SEM/EDS microanalysis revealed areas where pore‐filling calcite was preferentially dissolved. Longer‐term rock‐water reactions resulted in induced carbonate mineralization, as evidenced by calcite crystals observed in a sample reacted for 102 days. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Highly efficient separation membrane based on cellulose acetate/chitosan fibrous composite substrate with activated carbon functional adsorption layer

Abstract BACKGROUND For improving the permeability and selectivity of adsorption separation membranes, membrane materials, structural morphology and separation technology must continue to be investigated. Development of a membrane that is environmentally friendly, cost‐effective and with high filter precision is an important direction in current research. RESULTS The air pressure spraying method was used to prepare an activated carbon (AC)–cellulose acetate/chitosan (CA/CS) composite membrane. The CA/CS fiber composite membrane was prepared as substrate layer, and AC was loaded on the surface of the CA/CS composite membrane as a functional adsorption layer. When the spraying pressure was 0.01 MPa and the mass ratio of AC/CS was 2:1, a composite membrane with even and compact morphology could be obtained. Both the compact AC functional layer and complete CA/CS substrate layer endowed the AC–CA/CS composite membrane with an excellent water filtration property. At low feeding pressure, the permeate flux and rejection rate of bisphenol A (BPA) could reach 9.27 × 10 3 L m −2 h −1 and 98.31%, respectively. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacities of the membrane were investigated. It tended to equilibrate quickly in 2 min for dyes and BPA. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of the membrane for acid blue, acid yellow and BPA were 175.80, 164.0815 and 79.58 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process conformed to pseudo‐second‐order kinetics and the Langmuir monolayer adsorption model. CONCLUSIONS This work could provide a practical and effective feasibility for membrane separation technology. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI)

Green synthesis of sulfur‐doped g‐C 3 N 4 nanosheets for enhanced removal of oxytetracycline under visible‐light irradiation and reduction of its N ‐nitrosodimethylamine formation potential

Abstract BACKGROUND In this study, sulfur‐doped g‐C 3 N 4 (SCN) nanosheets were synthesized using thiourea as a precursor, and then used to catalyze the degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible‐light irradiation. OTC was chosen as target contaminant because of it being an important precursor of N ‐nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). RESULTS The removal of OTC was influenced by its initial concentration, initial pH, SCN dosage and water matrices. OTC (≤10 mg L −1 ) was almost completely removed in 40 min under the conditions of an initial pH of 7.0 and a SCN dose of 1.0 g L −1 , and its degradation was well described by the pseudo‐first‐order kinetics model. Water matrices would also influence the degradation of OTC in the system. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and trapping experiments confirmed that the function of the radicals for OTC removal followed the order of • O 2 − > • OH > h + . Eight transformation products were determined during the degradation of OTC, it being removed through four pathways: methyl oxidization, demethylation, decarbonylation and secondary alcohol oxidation. SCN was stable in the system, as the removal efficiency of OTC was not significantly reduced even after three recycles. In addition, 55.5% of NDMA formation potential of OTC was reduced after SCN catalytic oxidation. CONCLUSIONS The results imply that the visible‐light‐driven SCN catalytic oxidation is an effective technology not only for the removal of OTC but also for the reduction of NDMA formation potential. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Adsorption of methylene blue by bismuth impregnated biochar of different biomass materials: pore structure and surface chemistry characteristics

Abstract In this study, three different types of biochar (biomass materials were beech wood, corncob, and bamboo) were loaded with bismuth to form bismuth impregnated biochars (named respectively as Bi@WBC, Bi@CBC, and Bi@BBC) to investigate their properties (pore structure and surface chemistry characteristics) on methylene blue (MB) removal capacities. Three bismuth impregnated biochars made from different biomass materials were ranked for their adsorption capacity of MB as follows: Bi@WBC > Bi@CBC > Bi@BBC, in which Bi@WBC showed the largest Langmuir adsorption capacity of 178.59 mg g −1 . While the specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume of Bi@WBC were the largest (accounting for 477.74 m 2 g −1 and 0.15 cm 3 g −1 , respectively), according to the FTIR and XPS results, Bi@WBC (72.3%) exhibited a higher proportion of BiO bonds than the Bi@CBC (52.3%) and Bi@BBC (48.4%) did. Conclusively, the rich porous structure and surface functional groups of Bi@WBC affected the adsorption capacity of MB, and the chemical adsorption provided the main contribution. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Sn doping on partially dealuminated Beta zeolite by solid state ion exchange for 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural ( 5‐HMF ) production from glucose

Abstract BACKGROUND The conversion of glucose into 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (5‐HMF) involves the isomerization of glucose to fructose catalyzed by Lewis acid and subsequent dehydration of fructose catalyzed by Brönsted acid. In this work, in order to obtain a high yield of 5‐HMF, a series of Sn‐Al‐Beta catalysts containing both Lewis and Brönsted acid sites were prepared by a convenient solid state ion exchange (SSIE) method using partially dealuminated Beta zeolite and tin(II) acetate. RESULTS The obtained bifunctional catalysts were investigated for one‐pot production of 5‐HMF from glucose in the ionic liquid (IL) [C 4 mim]Cl. Among various catalysts, Sn‐Al‐Beta‐ 4 ‐ 8 exhibited the best catalytic performance, giving a 5‐HMF yield of 54% under optimal reaction conditions (393 K, 2 h), along with a glucose conversion of 81%. The Sn‐Al‐Beta‐ 4‐8 catalyst and IL were regenerated by the extraction of 5‐HMF, and the reactivity was reserved after five runs of recycling. In addition to glucose, the Sn‐Al‐Beta‐ 4‐8 /[C 4 mim]Cl system was also proven to have the potential to effectively convert other carbohydrates into 5‐HMF. CONCLUSION The results suggested that the catalyst is convenient to prepare and has preferable efficiency and stability in the conversion of carbohydrates into 5‐HMF. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Effect of dietary fiber fermentation on short‐chain fatty acid production and microbial composition in vitro

Abstract BACKGROUND The efficient utilization of fiber‐rich co‐products is important for optimizing feed resource utilization and animal health. This study was conducted to evaluate the fermentation characteristics of fiber‐rich co‐products, which had equal quantities of total dietary fiber (TDF), at different time points using batch in vitro methods. It considered their gas production, short‐chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and microbial composition. RESULTS The fermentation of wheat bran (WB) and oat bran (OB) showed higher and faster ( P < 0.05) gas and SCFA production than corn bran (CB), sugar beet pulp (SBP), and soybean hulls (SH). The α ‐diversity was higher in the CB, SBP, and SH groups than in the WB and OB groups ( P < 0.05). At the phylum level, OB and WB fermentation showed lower ( P < 0.05) relative abundance of Actinobacteria than the CB, SBP, and SH groups. At the genus level, OB and WB fermentation increased the Enterococcus population in comparison with the CB, SBP, and SH groups, whereas CB and SBP fermentation improved the relative abundance of the Christensenellaceae R‐7 group more than the WB, OB, and SH groups ( P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Overall, WB and OB were rapidly fermented by fecal microbiota, in contrast with SBP, SH, and CB. Fermentation of different fiber‐rich co‐products with an equal TDF content gives different responses in terms of microbial composition and SCFA production due to variations in their physicochemical properties and molecular structure. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

The effects of different types of mulch on soil properties and tea production and quality

Abstract BACKGROUND Tea is an important economic crop in China. Mulching, a modern agricultural practice, can modify the soil microenvironment and maintain the crop yield. RESULTS To investigate the effect of different mulching modes on tea plant growth, filed experiments were conducted in a Shizipu tea plantation located in Langxi Country (Xuanchen City, Anhui Province, China). Five treatments were carried out in a randomized complete block arrangement: (i) clean tillage (control); (ii) black plastic film; (iii) weed barrier fabric; (iv) rice straw mulch; and (v) intercropping with Vulpia myuros . The effects of different mulch modes on soil temperature, water moisture, soil compactness, root activity, soil enzyme activity and nutrition status on tea yield, quality and economic benefits were compared at the harvest stage. In the present study, compared with other mulch treatments, intercropping with V. myuros significantly reduced the topsoil temperature (to an optimum temperature) and soil compactness, and increased the water holding capacity in the deep soil layer, which contributed to increased tea root activity and respiration. Furthermore, intercropping with V. myuros significantly increased soil enzymes activity, soil organic matter, and the available nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the main root zone. Therefore, the stronger tea root activity accelerated nutrition uptake and increased the tea yield and quality‐related components of the tea, thus resulting in a larger average net income. CONCLUSION Intercropping with V. myuros could serve as a profitable agricultural method for tea production. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

Antihypertensive effect of quinoa protein under simulated gastrointestinal digestion and peptide characterization

Abstract BACKGROUND Quinoa protein is a potential source of bioactive peptides. Although some studies have demonstrated its angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory properties, research into its in vivo effect on blood‐pressure regulation and peptide characterization remains limited. RESULTS Quinoa protein hydrolyzate (QPH) was prepared by simulated gastrointestinal digestion. QPH lowered the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in spontaneously hypertensive model rats (SHRs) from 2 h to10 h after oral administration, effectively controlling blood pressure in these SHRs. An in vitro study showed that QPH is capable of inhibiting ACE activity. This was attributed to the activity of a number of low‐molecular‐weight peptides. With relatively high scores predicted by PeptideRanker, three promising bioactive peptides, FHPFPR, NWFPLPR, and NIFRPF, were further studied and their ACE‐inhibition effects were confirmed with IC 50 values of 34.92, 16.77, and 32.40 μM, respectively. A molecular docking study provided insights into the binding of ACE with peptides, and revealed that the presence of specific amino acids in the peptide sequence (Pro, Phe, and Arg at the C‐terminal, and Asn at the N‐terminal) could contribute to the interaction between ACE and peptides. CONCLUSION These results demonstrated the potential of QPH for the management of hypertension, which indicates that it could be a good candidate for inclusion in functional foods to control high blood pressure. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

Comparative study on the novel umami‐active peptides of the whole soybeans and the defatted soybeans fermented soy sauce

Abstract BACKGROUND Two kinds of soy sauce produced via fermentation of the whole soybeans and the defatted soybeans (soy sauce termed ‘SSS’ and ‘SSD’, respectively) were subjected to the treatment using aqueous ethanol solutions with high concentrations. Then tasty peptides were separated from SSS and SSD by sensory guided fractionation, using macroporous resin and reverse‐phase high‐performance liquid chromatography (RP‐HPLC), and identified by ultra‐performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time‐of‐flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC‐Q‐TOF‐MS/MS). Results The result showed that umami‐active fractions and ≤ 3 kDa peptides were mainly concentrated in the supernatants resulted from the treatment with 60% ethanol and the precipitates resulted from the treatment with 80% ethanol. The contents of ammonia nitrogen, non‐salt solids, bitter amino acids, amino acids in peptides and the proportion of ≤ 3 kDa peptides in SSS were higher than those in SSD. Sixteen and fourteen tasty peptides were separated from SSS and SSD, among them five dipeptides (γ‐Glu‐Glu, Glu‐Glu, γ‐Glu‐Cys, γ‐Glu‐Leu, Glu‐Leu and Ile‐Glu) with a glutamic acid residue were identified both in SSS and SSD, which have been reported as umami/kokumi‐active peptides in soy sauce. Several peptides identified from SSS (Thr‐Gly‐Cys, Gly‐Leu‐Glu, Val‐Glu‐Ala‐Leu and Gly‐Gly‐Gly‐Glu) and SSD (Asp‐Arg, Asp‐Ala‐Glu, Glu‐Val‐Cys and Gly‐Gly‐Gly‐Glu) are tasty and/or umami‐active peptides but have not been reported as tasty peptides in the past. Conclusion Most of the peptides separated from SSD and SSS could impart an umami‐enhancing effect on soy sauce, and the marginally more kokumi and bitterness hydrophobic peptides were found in SSS than SSD. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

Subacute safety assessment of recombinant Lactococcus lactis on the gut microbiota of male Sprague–Dawley rats

Abstract BACKGROUND Lactococcus lactis strain pGSMT/MG1363 is a genetically modified microorganism (GMM) that constitutively expresses human metallothionein‐I fusion protein to combine with intracellular lead. Unlike traditional probiotics, pGSMT/MG1363 lacks a history of safe use in food. Administration of microorganism could influence the gut microbial community and consequently confer health benefits or cause disadvantages to the host. To date, little has been done to assess the influence of recombinant strain pGSMT/MG1363 on the stability of gut microbiota. RESULTS Liver, testis and kidney sections of male Sprague–Dawley rats orally administered pGSMT/MG1363 for 6 weeks showed normal structure and no pathological damage. There were no adverse effects on the analyzed serum biochemical parameters between the pGSMT/MG1363 group and the MG1363 group. Principal coordinate analysis showed that, compared with the MG1363 group, the 6‐week‐old fecal gut microbiota of rats fed with pGSMT/MG1363 was not significantly different (Adonis, P = 0.802). pGSMT/MG1363 treatment for 6 weeks did not significantly change the relative abundance of gut microbiota at the phylum and genus levels in comparison with MG1363 treatment. CONCLUSION Compared to the non‐GM strain MG1363 group, administration of the recombinant strain pGSMT/MG1363 for 6 weeks showed no adverse effects on the analyzed physiological parameters and gut microbial compositions of male Sprague–Dawley rats. The results suggested that, in terms of gut microbiota stability, pGSMT/MG1363 could be considered as safe as MG1363, at least for short‐term intake. Further toxicological evaluations still need to be considered before drawing a definite conclusion concerning the safe use of pGSMT/MG1363. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Long‐term continuous cropping affects ecoenzymatic stoichiometry of microbial nutrient acquisition: a case study from a Chinese Mollisol

Abstract BACKGROUND Soil‐ and plant‐produced extracellular enzymes drive nutrient cycling in soils and are assumed to regulate supply and demand for carbon (C) and nutrients within the soil. Thus, agriculture management decisions that alter the balance of plant and supplemental nutrients should directly alter extracellular enzyme activities (EEAs), and EEA stoichiometry in predictable ways. We used a 12‐year experiment that varyied three major continuous grain crops (wheat, soybean, and maize), each crossed with mineral fertilizer (WCF, SCF and MCF, respectively) or not fertilized (WC, SC and MC, respectively, as controls). In response, we measured the phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), EEAs and their stoichiometry to examine the changes to soil microbial nutrient demand under the continuous cropping of crops, which differed with respect to the input of plant litter and fertilizer. RESULTS Fertilizer generally decreased soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity compared to non‐fertilized soil. According to enzyme stoichiometry, microbial nutrient demand was generally C‐ and phosphorus (P)‐limited, but not nitrogen (N)‐limited. However, the degree of microbial resource limitation differed among the three crops. The enzymatic C:N ratio was significantly lower by 13.3% and 26.8%, whereas the enzymatic N:P ratio was significantly higher by 9.9% and 42.4%, in MCF than in WCF and SCF, respectively. The abundances of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and aerobic PLFAs were significantly higher in MCF than in WCF and SCF. CONCLUSION These findings are crucial for characterizing enzymatic activities and their stoichiometries that drive microbial metabolism with respect to understanding soil nutrient cycles and environmental conditions and optimizing practices of agricultural management. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Fabrication and characterization of dextran/zein hybrid electrospun fibers with tailored properties for controlled release of curcumin

Abstract BACKGROUND In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of biopolymer electrospun nanofibers for various food applications due to the biocompatibility, biodegradability, and high loading capacity. Herein, we fabricated and characterized novel hybrid electrospun fibers from dextran (50%, w/v ) and zein (0–30%, w/v ) solutions, and the effects of various zein concentrations on the properties of the hybrid electrospun fibers were investigated. RESULTS When zein was added at low concentrations (5% and 10%), dextran and zein showed poor miscibility, as reflected by significantly decreased viscosity of the solutions, and the poor mechanical properties of the derived fiber membranes. When zein was added at medium concentrations (15–25%), hydrogen bonds were formed between dextran and zein molecules, as indicated by the red shift of Fourier‐transform infrared bands and β‐sheet to α‐helix structural transformations. The fiber membranes electrospun from a solution with 25% zein showed the most hydrophobic surface, with a water contact angle of 116.9°. The homogenous dispersion of dextran and zein resulted in improved mechanical properties for fibers electrospun from a solution with 30% zein. Curcumin encapsulating dextran/zein electrospun fibers exhibited effective radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing power, along with the desired controlled release behavior for curcumin delivery. CONCLUSION Food grade dextran/zein hybrid electrospun fibers demonstrated tunable properties, and appear to be promising as delivery systems for bioactive and edible antimicrobial food packaging. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Long‐term drench of exopolysaccharide from Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides XG5 protects against type 1 diabetes of NOD mice via stimulating GLP ‐1 secretion

Abstract BACKGROUND Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results in the specific destruction of insulin‐producing beta cells in the pancreas. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of exopolysaccharide from Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides XG5 (XG5 EPS) against type 1 diabetes. RESULTS Long‐term drench of XG5 EPS delayed the onset of autoimmune diabetes and had fewer islets with high‐grade infiltration (an insulitis score of 3 or 4) than untreated NOD mice. Oral administration of 50 mg kg −1 d −1 XG5 EPS increased the insulin and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1) levels of serum, stimulated GLP‐1 secretion and upregulated gcg mRNA expression of colon in NOD mice. Moreover, oral administration of 50 mg kg −1 d −1 XG5 EPS significantly increased total short‐chain fatty acids levels in the colon contents, especially those of acetic acid and butyric acid. In NCI‐H716 cells, 500 and 1000 μmol L −1 sodium butyrate promoted the secretion of GLP‐1 and upregulated the mRNA expression of gcg and PC3 , while XG5 EPS and sodium acetate did not stimulate the GLP‐1 secretion. Therefore, long‐term drench of XG5 EPS delayed the onset of autoimmune diabetes, which may be directly correlated with the increase of butyrate in the colon of NOD mice. CONCLUSION Long‐term drench of 50 mg kg −1 d −1 XG5 EPS promoted the expression and secretion of GLP‐1 by increasing the production of butyric acid, thereby delaying T1D onset in NOD mice. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Quinoa protein extract: an effective alternative for the fining of wine phenolics

Abstract BACKGROUND Lately, there has been an increasing interest in using plant‐derived proteins for wine phenolic fining. Proteins extracted from cereals, potatoes, and legumes have been proposed as effective fining agents, but only those from pea, wheat, and potatoes have been approved for their use in wine. This work aimed at determining the fining ability of quinoa ( Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) protein extracts (QP), compared to commercial fining agents, on red wines. RESULTS The trials compared the performance of QP (30 and 50 g/hL), two potato protein extracts and gelatin, at two different contact times (48 and 96 h), using Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Turbidity, total phenolics, precipitable tannins, catechins, and color characteristics were determined. QP reduced the turbidity of all wines in a similar way to commercial fining agents. Both doses of QP significantly reduced tannins and other phenolic measures, including color intensity reductions, in a similar way to commercial fining agents. CONCLUSION QP behaved as an effective fining agent that deserves further studies in order to improve its performance and advance its characterization. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Flaxseed oil ameliorates aging in d ‐galactose induced rats via altering gut microbiota and mitigating oxidative damage

Abstract BACKGROUND Aging causes decreased antioxidant capacity and chronic inflammation and may even elevate cancer risks. Previous studies reported that flaxseed oil (FO) can alleviate age‐related diseases, including improving alcoholic liver disease, atherosclerosis and diabetes. However, whether the intestinal microbiota accountable for this alleviation is still unknown. This study aims to study the antioxidant effects of FO in an aging rat model and the underlying mechanism between the intestinal microbiota and aging. RESULTS Our results presented that serum and liver antioxidant capacities in FO group were up‐regulated, and liver inflammation in FO group was reduced. The 16S rDNA sequencing showed that FO regulated the microbial community, including up‐regulation of four families of Lactobacillus and six families of Clostridium. In addition, FO had also adjusted the relative abundance of several genera such as Ruminococcaceae_UCG‐005 and Prevotella_9 , which may be the key bacteria associated with the aging process. Colonic transcriptome analysis showed that there were 1679 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the Model group and the FO group (134 up‐regulated and 1545 down‐regulated). Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) revealed FO down‐regulates the expression of the upstream genes Ptprc , Lck , Zap70 , Lat and Lcp2 in the T cell receptor signaling pathway. CONCLUSION In conclusion, FO improved antioxidant capacity and reduced intestinal microbial disturbances caused by aging damage, indicating that dietary FO has the potential to fight aging damage. This study provides a more comprehensive view of dietary intervention to improve aging. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Genetic variation in nitrogen‐use efficiency and its associated traits in dryland winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars released from the 1940s to the 2010s in Shaanxi Province, China

Abstract BACKGROUND Improving the nitrogen‐use efficiency (NUE) of wheat can help mitigate the problems of poor soil fertility under dryland conditions. We conducted field experiments using three nitrogen (N) fertilization levels (0, 120, and 180 kg ha −1 ) applied to eight dryland wheat cultivars to assess NUE and its associated traits. RESULTS The grain yield significantly increased with the improvement in variety, mainly as a result of a substantial increase in 1000‐grain weight and harvest index. Modern wheat varieties have stabilized at an optimal plant height and exhibited improved performance in terms of NUE, partial N productivity, N harvest index, and grain protein content compared to older varieties. The NUE of wheat gradually increased with variety replacement. The net photosynthesis rate of the flag leaves in the filling stage improved with the year of cultivar release; Increasing soil–plant analysis development (SPAD) values of flag leaves in the flowering and filling stages were observed over time, with the flag leaves of modern varieties showing a high chlorophyll content in the filling stage. Additionally, the principal component analysis showed that the SPAD value, grain number per unit area, transpiration rate, leaf area, and grain protein content positively contributed to the clustering of the N180 and modern cultivars (from the 2000s to 2010s). CONCLUSION Overall, high levels of N application did not significantly improve the NUE of wheat. However, modern wheat varieties can optimize N distribution, increase flag leaf photosynthetic capacity, and improve photosynthesis ability, thus enhancing NUE to achieve high yields under a suitable level of N supply. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Improving the bioaccessibility of lipophilic ingredient in its oral intestinal delivery by ultrasound and biological cross‐linker

Abstract BACKGROUND Great efforts have been made to improve the oral bioaccessibility of lipophilic ingredients with multi‐functionalities. Achieving intestinal delivery of lipophilic ingredients and their encapsulation in micelles composed of bile salts and lipid hydrolysates (i.e. fatty acids) is critical for improving oral bioaccessibility. Therefore, oil‐core microcapsules are considered ideal carriers of lipophilic ingredients. Previous studies have reported oil‐core/zein‐shell microcapsules constructed by a one‐step anti‐solvent process. Still, its efficacy as an intestinal delivery system was limited because if the porous shell structure. RESULTS Zein solution was pretreated with ultrasound and tannic acid (TA) cross‐linking. Composite oil‐core microcapsule (COM) with a compact shell structure was successfully prepared by using modified zein solution in the anti‐solvent process. Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism analyses indicated that ultrasound and TA synergistically promote the conformational transition of zein from α‐helix to β‐sheet and enhance the hydrophobic interactions among protein chains. The above changes contribute to the strengthen of shell zein network. Correspondingly, COM presents superior encapsulation efficiency and environmental stability over the simple oil‐core microcapsule (SOM) prepared without the use of ultrasound and TA. Furthermore, antioxidant activity of β‐carotene was well retained during the encapsulation process. In vitro studies indicated that COM was more resistant to digestibility and acid‐induced swelling. More than 87% of β‐carotene could be released in the intestine in a sustainable way. The controllable release behavior thus promoted a significant increase in bioaccessibility of β‐carotene encapsulated in COM compared to SOM (85.9% versus 48.5%). CONCLUSION The COM generated here shows potential for bioaccessibility improvement of lipophilic ingredients. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Fermented Cerasus humilis fruits protect against high‐fat diet induced hyperlipidemia which is associated with alteration of gut microbiota

Abstract BACKGROUND Hyperlipidemia is regarded as a public health matter, and its effective prevention and treatment are urgently required. However, the treatment of hyperlipidemia is still relatively scarce. RESULTS Fermented Cerasus humilis fruit (FCHF) had higher total flavonoid, total phenolic, procyanidin, and organic and free amino acid content, and lower total sugar content, than non‐fermented C. humilis fruit (NFCHF). Both FCHF and NFCHF treatment significantly prevent putting on weight. Furthermore, FCHF administration ameliorated hyperlipidemia and cholesterol over‐accumulation. In addition, FCHF administration activated the antioxidase system and decreased the malondialdehyde content to relieve oxidative stress, and showed more efficaciously than NFCHF administration. FCHF treatments significantly reverse the fat deposition in high‐fat diet rat liver. FCHF supplementation can relieve the dysbacteriosis induced by hyperlipidemia, and regulate the composition of rat gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of Prevotella and norank_f_Muribaculaceae . CONCLUSION Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation enhanced the antihyperlipidemic property of C. humilis fruits by promoting gut microbiota regulation. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
