This paper introduces an open-source analytics framework designed to assist in creating low or net-zero carbon buildings and urban districts. Integrated within URBANopt, an open-source platform for energy analysis in districts and communities, this framework equips researchers, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders with tools to evaluate the carbon footprint implications of their design choices. The framework enables the analysis of various scenarios, incorporating both historical and future emission factors, and can span across different climate zones, each with distinct grid and emissions characteristics. The results showcase the framework's capability to evaluate the impact of design upgrades and control strategies on carbon emissions in districts and communities. An illustrative analysis using a hypothetical district in Denver, Colorado, shows reduced emissions from energy efficiency upgrades and control strategies, highlighting the sensitivity in their effects on emissions and energy use.
The Transient Water Irradiation System is an enhanced capability capsule type irradiation vehicle designed to support fuel safety research for light water reactor specimens in the Transient Reactor Test Facility and is designed to simulate loss of coolant and reactivity-initiated accidents. The capsule was designed, deployed, and commissioned with fresh fuel specimens to validate instrumentation and prepare for previously irradiated high burnup specimens. The irradiation system features an extensive in-situ instrumentation package to detect phenomena typical to light water reactor fuels. To accommodate the assembly with high burnup specimens inside the Hot Fuel Examination Facility, and to ensure instrumentation integrity is maintained throughout assembly, the design was updated to support remote handling. The updated design features a hinge mechanism which allows for remote pre-irradiated specimen loading and assembly while protecting sensitive instrumentation by relocating during loading. Fixtures and equipment have been developed to handle the experiment capsule and components in cell, and to support remote assembly. The experiment module also includes radiation shielding and contamination control to support operations after removal from the hot cell.
Zero energy buildings, or zero energy ready buildings, which are designed and operated by public or private commercial property owners can play an important role in reducing carbon emissions. This paper discusses lessons learned and key takeaways from an in-depth analysis of three zero energy buildings that took an integrated design and construction approach to significantly reduce energy use. Two of these projects are new construction and one is a retrofit to zero energy. Findings are based on project literature review, data analysis, and in-depth interviews with the building design teams and staff who were involved during the design, construction, and operation of the buildings. The paper addresses value proposition and cost data in such a way that other building owners can replicate the strategies and technology solutions in response to regulatory mandates or organizational goals. It also provides details on operational improvements taken at each zero energy building to enhance energy performance and increase the potential for load flexibility, and discusses challenges and lessons gleaned from design teams and building staff. The findings serve as a reference for building owners, designers, engineers, contractors, or others interested in, or involved with, the design, construction, or use of new or existing buildings. The paper also includes recommended pathways for widespread adoption of zero energy strategies that can be applied in various locations.
