Engineering evaluation of SSME dynamic data from engine tests and SSV flights

An engineering evaluation of dynamic data from SSME hot firing tests and SSV flights is summarized. The basic objective of the study is to provide analyses of vibration, strain and dynamic pressure measurements in support of MSFC performance and reliability improvement programs. A brief description of the SSME test program is given and a typical test evaluation cycle reviewed. Data banks generated to characterize SSME component dynamic characteristics are described and statistical analyses performed on these data base measurements are discussed. Analytical models applied to define the dynamic behavior of SSME components (such as turbopump bearing elements and the flight accelerometer safety cut-off system) are also summarized. Appendices are included to illustrate some typical tasks performed under this study.

The cosmic ray spectrum above 10(17) eV

The final analysis of the data obtained by the Sydney University Giant Airshower Recorder (SUGAR) is presented. The data has been reanalysed to take into account the effects of afterpulsing in the photomultiplier tubes. Event data was used to produce a spectrum of equivalent vertical muon number and from this a model dependent primary energy spectrum was obtained. These spectra show good evidence for the Ankle: a flattening at 10(19) eV. There is no sign of the cut-off which would be expected from the effects of the universal black body radiation.

Optical identifications of radio sources with accurate positions using the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (UKST) IIIa-J plates

Several programs are making use of UKST Sky Survey plates to identify southern radio sources. The fine-grain modern plates and accurate radio positions give a much improved identification rate. It seems that it will very soon be possible to determine whether or not there is a quasar redshift cut-off at z of about 4. There is an urgent need for more accurate fundamental reference star positions in the South.

Dc and microwave characteristics of a high current double interface GaAs/InGaAs/AlGaAs pseudomorphic modulation-doped field-effect transistor

Extremely large current double interface GaAs/In(0.15)Ga(0.85)As/Al(0.15)Ga(0.85)As pseudomorphic modulation-doped field-effect transistors (MODFET's) grown by molecular beam epitaxy were achieved. The 1-micron gate devices studied have peak current levels (430 mA/mm at 300 K and 483mA/mm at 77 K) roughly one and a half to two times that found in single interface pseudomorphic MODFET's. These devices also retain high transconductances over a broad range of gate voltage, peaking at 312 mS/mm at 300 K and 362 mS/mm at 77 K. Excellent microwave performance is also obtained with a maximum frequency of oscillation (f-max) of 37 GHz and a current gain cut-off frequency of as high as 23 GHz at 300 K. An output power level of 14 dBm (1 dB gain compression) was obtained at 6 GHz for a 290-micron gate width. This double interface single quantum well MODFET may be of great importance in millimeter wave power amplifiers.

Turbofan aft duct suppressor study

Suppressions due to acoustic treatment in the annular exhaust duct of a model fan were theoretically predicted and compared with measured suppressions. The predictions are based on the modal analysis of sound propagation in a straight annular flow duct with segmented treatment. Modal distributions of the fan noise source (fan-stator interaction only) were measured using in-duct modal probes. The flow profiles were also measured in the vicinity of the modal probes. The acoustic impedance of the single degree of freedom treatment was measured in the presence of grazing flow. The measured values of mode distribution of the fan noise source, the flow velocity profile and the acoustic impedance of the treatment in the duct were used as input to the prediction program. The predicted suppressions, under the assumption of uniform flow in the duct, compared well with the suppressions measured in the duct for all test conditions. The interaction modes generated by the rotor-stator interaction spanned a cut-off ratio range from nearly 1 to 7.

Near-ultraviolet spectroscopy of Seyfert nuclei - Reddening and Bowen fluorescence

Spectra with high signal-to-noise ratios extending down to the atmospheric ultraviolet cut-off have been obtained for 11 Seyfert nuclei with narrow emission lines. In all objects the He II lines at 3204 A and 4686 A were measured simultaneously. Their ratio gives an estimate of reddening accurate to 0.14 mag in E(B-V). The redshifts of nine of the Seyfert galaxies are sufficient to allow detection of the O III 3133 line A, produced by Bowen fluorescence of He II Ly-alpha photons. The inferred efficiency of the Bowen mechanism ranges from 15 to 50 percent. The lower values, which are considerably less than the efficiencies found in planetary nebulae, are observed in Seyfert 2 nuclei with systematically weaker emission lines from high-excitation, high-density gas. In contrast, the Seyfert 1 and high-excitation Seyfert 2 nuclei have more 'normal' Bowen efficiencies. Several possible explanations are considered.

Characterization of InGaAs/AlGaAs pseudomorphic modulation-doped field-effect transistors

High-performance pseudomorphic In(y)Ga(1-y)As/Al0.15-Ga0.85As y = 0.05-0.2 MODFET's grown by MBE have been characterized at dc (300 and 77 K) and RF frequencies. Transconductances as high 310 and 380 mS/mm and drain currents as high as 290 and 310 mA/mm were obtained at 300 and 77 K, respectively, for 1-micron gate lengths and 3-micron source-drain spacing devices. Lack of persistent trapping effects, I-V collapse, and threshold voltage shifts observed with these devices are attributed to the use of low mole fraction Al(x)Ga(1-x)As while still maintaining two-dimensional electron gas concentrations of about 1.3 x to the 12th per sq cm. Detailed microwave S-parameter measurements indicate a current gain cut-off frequency of 24.5 GHz when y = 0.20, which is as much as 100 percent better than similar GaAs/AlGaAs MODFET structures, and a maximum frequency of oscillation of 40 GHz.

Relationship between directions of wave and energy propagation for cold plasma waves

The dispersion relation for plasma waves is considered in the 'cold' plasma approximation. General formulas for the dependence of the phase and group velocities on the direction of wave propagation with respect to the local magnetic field are obtained for a cold magnetized plasma. The principal cold plasma resonances and cut-off frequencies are defined for an arbitrary angle and are used to establish basic regimes of frequency where the cold plasma waves can propagate or can be evanescent. The relationship between direction of wave and energy propagation, for cold plasma waves in hydrogen atmosphere, is presented in the form of angle diagrams (angle between group velocity and magnetic field versus angle between phase velocity and magnetic field) and polar diagrams (also referred to as 'Friedrich's diagrams') for different directions of wave propagation. Morphological features of the diagrams as well as some critical angles of propagation are discussed.

Thermal modeling of high rate Li-SOCl2 primary cylindrical cells

Four different heat transfer paths were separately investigated in a spirally-wound D-size cell. Thermal resistances of the relating components along each heat transfer path were calculated, and the total network of thermal resistances was constructed, resulting in the total thermal resistance of approximately 16.4 C/W at Tw = 40 C, and 12.2 C/W at Tw = 100 C. The amount of heat transferred along the radial direction, which is normal to the electrodes, was found to be about 91 percent of the total heat dissipation. Based on the present results obtained at the component level, the present D-size lithium cell may be operated at a C/2 discharge rate under normal discharge conditions below the cut-off voltage of 2.5 V.

Optoelectronic gain control of a microwave single stage GaAs MESFET amplifier

Gain control of a single stage GaAs MESFET amplifier is demonstrated by the use of optical illumination of photon energy greater than the GaAs bandgap. The optical illumination is supplied by a semiconductor laser diode and is coupled to the Schottky gate of the MESFET by an optical fiber. The increase in gain is observed to be as much as 5.15 dB when the MESFET is biased close to pinchoff, that is, V(sub gs) equals -1.5 V and with optical illumination of 1.5 mW. The computed maximum available gain (MAG) and current gain (bar h sub 21 bar) from the de-embedded s-parameters show that MAG is unaffected by optical illumination, however, bar h(sub 21)bar increases by more than 2 dB under optical illumination of 1.5 mW. The maximum frequency of oscillation (F sub max) and the unity current gain cut-off frequency (F sub t) obtained by extrapolating the MAG and bar h(sub 21)bar curves, respectively, show that the F(sub max) is insensitive to optical illumination but F(sub t) increases by 5 GHz.

Overview of advanced components for fiber optic systems

The basic operating principles and potential performance of several state-of-the-art fiber-optic devices are illustrated with diagrams and briefly characterized. Technologies examined include high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers and directional couplers, single-mode fiber polarizers and cut-off polarizers, optical-fiber modulators with radially poled piezoactive polymer (PVF2) jackets, and piezoelectric-squeezer polarization modulators. The need for improved manufacturing techniques to make such fiber-optic devices cost-competitive with their thin-film integrated-optics analogs is indicated.

ISEE-3 observations of the earth's radio continuum through the bow shock and magnetosheath and in the magnetosphere

On October 1 1983, ISEE-3 crossed the earth's bow shock several times and entered the magnetosphere while continuously recording the nonthermal continuum (NTC) radio emission which is generated inside the magnetosphere. The effects of the solar wind, the bow shock, the magnetosheath, and the magnetopause on the propagation of the NTC are studied. On that day it is found that: (1) the relative values of the NTC low frequency cut-off in the solar wind and in the magnetosheath is due to an unusually high density overshoot in the bow shock, 7 to 11 times the solar wind density; (2) refraction at the interface between the magnetosheath and the solar wind can explain most of the decrease in the source angular size when the observer travels away from the earth; (3) plasma density irregularities in the magnetosheath cause considerable scattering of the NTC, and this effect gives a large apparent size to the NTC source when observed from inside the magnetosheath; and (4) the apparent source is also relatively large inside the magnetosphere, probably due to an approach to ray isotropy caused by oblique reflections from the magnetopause.

The generation of proton beams in two-ribbon flares

It is shown that, in the current sheet at the top of the arcade of postflare loops in a two-ribbon solar flare, particle beams are generated by direct electric-field acceleration. The acceleration process is completely collisionless and is limited only by the gyromotion along the component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the sheet. This mechanism is similar to the particle acceleration in the geomagnetic tail. Neutral beams emanate from the sheet with almost zero pitch angle, making protons the main carriers of the beam energy. Approximately 10 to the 35th protons/sec are generated with a typical energy of 200 keV. Their energy distribution is a single power law, with an upper and lower energy cut-off. Such a population is capable of simultaneously generating the observed impulsive-phase hard X-rays and the gamma rays.

HIEN-LO: An experiment for charge determination of cosmic rays of interplanetary and solar origin

The experiment is designed to measure the heavy ion environment at low altitude (HIEN-LO) in the energy range 0.3 to 100 MeV/nucleon. In order to cover this wide energy range a complement of three sensors is used. A large area ion drift chamber and a time-of-flight telescope are used to determine the mass and energy of the incoming cosmic rays. A third omnidirectional counter serves as a proton monitor. The analysis of mass, energy and incoming direction in combination with the directional geomagnetic cut-off allows the determination of the ionic charge of the cosmic rays. The ionic charge in this energy range is of particular interest because it provides clues to the origin of these particles and to the plasma conditions at the acceleration site. The experiment is expected to be flown in 1988/1989.

Energy Efficient Engine acoustic supporting technology report

The acoustic development of the Energy Efficient Engine combined testing and analysis using scale model rigs and an integrated Core/Low Spool demonstration engine. The scale model tests show that a cut-on blade/vane ratio fan with a large spacing (S/C = 2.3) is as quiet as a cut-off blade/vane ratio with a tighter spacing (S/C = 1.27). Scale model mixer tests show that separate flow nozzles are the noisiest, conic nozzles the quietest, with forced mixers in between. Based on projections of ICLS data the Energy Efficient Engine (E3) has FAR 36 margins of 3.7 EPNdB at approach, 4.5 EPNdB at full power takeoff, and 7.2 EPNdB at sideline conditions.

Some Effects of Air Flow on the Penetration and Distribution of Oil Sprays

Tests were made to determine the effects of air flow on the characteristics of fuel sprays from fuel injection valves. Curves and photographs are presented showing the airflow throughout the chamber and the effects of the air flow on the fuel spray characteristics. It was found that the moving air had little effect on the spray penetration except with the 0.006 inch orifice. The moving air did, however, affect the oil particles on the outside of the spray cone. After spray cut-off, the air flow rapidly distributed the atomized fuel throughout the spray chamber.
