Leveraging the redox activities of cerium and dibenzotetrathiafulvalene to discover a photo-responsive magnetic material

Stimuli-responsive changes in lanthanide-based materials are a promising research direction. In this study, [DBTTF] 4 [Ce 2 Cl 10 ] DBTTF = dibenzotetrathiafulvalene (1) was synthesized by a light-induced crystallization, where photo-oxidation of DBTTF enables formation of the cerium dimer [Ce 2 Cl 10 ] 4− . Intermolecular interactions between the stacked organic units of the crystal result in charge transfer bands in the visible-NIR (near-infrared) region, evident in the solid-state absorption spectrum upon comparison with the solution spectrum. The assignments of the sublattice oxidation states were made with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) structural characterization, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and magnetometry. Continuous 532 nm laser irradiation of the microcrystalline solid modulates the redox states in 1, leading to ∼40% reduction in the observed magnetization at 2 K. Density functional theory PBE+U/HSE06 band structure calculations predict Mott insulating behavior in 1, with a bandgap of 0.54/0.81 eV, and further support the conjecture that the observed photo-induced change in magnetization results from electron transfer from the [Ce 2 Cl 10 ] 4− anions to the π-stacked [DBTTF] 2 2+ organic dimer subunits. An enhancement in conductivity is similarly observed upon 532 nm irradiation, determined by single-crystal transport measurements. The findings reveal that photo-responsive lanthanide-based materials can be achieved by integration of redox-active organic moieties with redox-active lanthanide cations for the realization of switchable, photo-magnetic materials.

Resolving the Solvation Structure and Transport Properties of Aqueous Zinc Electrolytes from Salt-in-Water to Water-in-Salt Using Neural Network Potential

Zn Cl 2 solutions are promising electrolytes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Here, we report a joint computational and experimental study of the structural and dynamic properties of aqueous Zn Cl 2 electrolytes with concentrations ranging from salt-in-water to water-in-salt (WIS). By developing a neural network potential (NNP) model, we perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with accuracy but at much larger lengths and longer timescales. The NNP predicted structures are validated by the structure factors measured by X-ray total scattering experiments. The MD trajectories provide a comprehensive and quantitative picture of the Zn 2 + solvation shell structures. Additionally, we find that the O − H covalent bonds in water are strengthened with increasing salt concentration, thus expanding the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes. In terms of dynamic properties, the calculated and experimentally measured conductivities are in good agreement. Through the analysis of the calculated cation transference number, we propose a three-stage charge carrier transport mechanism with increasing concentration: independent ion transport, strongly correlated ion transport, and small positive charge carrier diffusion through negatively charged polymeric clusters. Our study provides fundamental atomic scale insights into the structure and transport properties of the Zn Cl 2 electrolyte that can aid the optimization and development of WIS electrolytes. Impact of iodide ions on the speciation of radiolytic transients in molten LiCl–KCl eutectic salt mixtures

The fate of fission-product iodine is critical for the deployment of next generation molten salt reactor technologies, owing to its volatility and biological impacts if it were to be released into the environment. To date, little is known on how ionizing radiation fields influence the redox chemistry, speciation, and transport of iodine in high temperature molten salts. Here we employ picosecond electron pulse irradiation techniques to elucidate for the first time the impact of iodide ions (I – ) on the speciation and chemical kinetics of the primary radiation-induced transient radicals generated in molten chloride salt mixtures (e S – and Cl 2 ˙– ) as a function of temperature (400–700 °C). In the presence of I – ions (≥ 1 wt% KI in LiCl–KCl eutectic), we find that the transient spectrum following the electron pulse is composed of at least three overlapping species: the e S – and the Cl 2 ˙– and ICl ˙– radical anions, for which a deconvoluted spectrum of the latter is reported here for the first time in molten salts. This new transient spectrum was consistent with gas phase density functional theory calculations. The lifetime of the e S – was unaffected by the addition of I – ions. The newly observed interhalogen radical anion, ICl˙ – , exhibited a lifetime on the order of microseconds over the investigated temperature range. The associated chemical kinetics indicate that the predominate mechanism of ICl˙ – decay is via reaction with the Cl 2 ˙– radical anion. The iodine containing product of this reaction is expected to be ICl 2 – , which will have implications for the transport of fission-product iodine in MSR technologies.

Diffusion coefficient and nucleation density studies on electrochemical deposition of aluminum from chloroaluminate ionic liquid electrolytes

In this study, aluminum was electrodeposited from ionic liquids comprising a melt of alkyl imidazolium chlorides and aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 ). The ionic liquids utilized in this study were 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride (EMIC)-AlCl 3 , 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC)-AlCl 3 , and 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride (HMIC)-AlCl 3 at the AlCl 3 mole fraction of 0.667 (molar ratio of 1:2). The electrochemical behavior of chloroaluminate species in the three ionic liquids was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) techniques at different temperatures. The cyclic voltammograms indicated that the reduction of Al 2 Cl 7 – species to metallic aluminum followed a diffusion-controlled phenomenon. Moreover, even at a less negative applied potential, the higher current density was obtained for EMIC-AlCl 3 ionic liquid. That indicates that EMIC-AlCl 3 favors less energy consumption during the electrodeposition. The chronoamperometric analysis revealed that the onset of aluminum deposition from such ionic liquids proceeds via a three-dimensional instantaneous nucleation process. The concentrations of Al 2 Cl 7 – ions in the ionic liquids were calculated based on the thermodynamic data, which were 2520, 2271, and 2035 mol m –3 for EMIC-AlCl 3 , BMIC-AlCl 3 , and HMIC-AlCl 3 , respectively. The diffusion coefficient (D) values of Al 2 Cl 7 – species in such ionic liquids were also calculated at various temperatures. The D values determined from the CA technique at 363 K are 2.16 × 10 –11 , 1.03 × 10 –11 , and 0.87 × 10 –11 m 2 s –1 for EMIC-AlCl 3 , BMICAlCl 3 , and HMIC-AlCl 3 , respectively. In addition, the D value increased as temperature increased and decreased as the hydrocarbon group in the ionic liquid increased. As a result, the calculated grain sizes of nucleation range from 2 to 4 μm for these ionic liquids and are in good agreement with experimental data obtained from SEM micrographs.

Strong polaronic effect in a superatomic two-dimensional semiconductor

Crystalline solids assembled from superatomic building blocks are attractive functional materials due to their hierarchical structure, multifunctionality, and tunability. An interesting example is Re 6 Se 8 Cl 2 , in which the Re 6 Se 8 building blocks are covalently linked into two-dimensional (2D) sheets that are stacked into a layered van der Waals solid. It is an indirect gap semiconductor that, when heavily doped, becomes a superconductor at low temperatures. Given the finite electronic bandwidths (300–400 meV), carrier properties in this material are expected to be strongly influenced by coupling to phonons. Here, we apply angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe the valence band edge (VBE) of Re 6 Se 8 Cl 2 . We find that dispersion of the VBE is a strong function of temperature. The bandwidth is W = 120 ± 30 meV at 70 K and decreases by one order of magnitude to W ~ 10 ± 20 meV as temperature is increased to 300 K. This observation reveals the dominant polaronic effects in Re 6 Se 8 Cl 2 , consistent with the Holstein polaron model commonly used to describe molecular solids.

Study on the Thermal Stabilizing Process of Layered Double Hydroxides in PVC Resin

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is widely used in various fields and requires the use of thermal stabilizers to enhance its thermal stability during processing because of its poor thermal stability. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are widely considered to be one kind of highly efficient and environmentally friendly PVC thermal stabilizer. To investigate the thermal stabilizing process of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in PVC resin, PVC and MgAl-LDHs powders with different interlayer anions (CO 3 2- , Cl - , and NO 3 - ) were physically mixed and aged at 180 °C. The structure of LDHs at different aging times was studied using XRD, SEM, and FT-IR. The results show that the thermal stabilizing process of LDHs on PVC mainly has three stages. In the first stage, the layers of LDHs undergo a reaction with HCl, which is released during the thermal decomposition of PVC. Subsequently, the ion exchange process occurs between Cl - and interlayer CO 3 2- , resulting in the formation of MgAl-Cl-LDHs. Finally, the layers of MgAl-Cl-LDHs react with HCl slowly. During the thermal stabilizing process of MgAl-Cl-LDHs, the peak intensity of XRD reduces slightly, and no new XRD peak emerges. It indicates that only the first step happens for MgAl-Cl-LDHs. The TG-DTA analysis of LDHs indicates that the interaction of LDHs with different interlayer anions has the following order: NO 3 - < CO 3 2- < Cl - , according to the early coloring in the thermal aging test of PVC composites. The results of the thermal aging tests suggest that LDHs with a weak interaction between interlayer anions and layers can enhance the early stability of PVC significantly. Furthermore, the thermal aging test demonstrates that LDHs with high HCl absorption capacities exhibit superior long-term stabilizing effects on PVC resin. This finding provides a valuable hint for designing an LDHs/PVC resin with a novel structure and excellent thermal stability.

Intramolecular 1,2 C-H Addition of o -Methyl Groups to Form Unique Ruthenium Pincer Tuck-in Complexes

New RPN H P ligands containing 2,4-xylyl (4mXPN H P) and mesityl (MesPN H P) groups on the phosphorus atoms were synthesized. 4mXPN H P reacts with [(cymene)RuCl 2 ] 2 followed by PMe 3 to produce κ 3 -4mXPN H PRu(PMe 3 )Cl 2 . MesPN H P reacts with [(cymene)RuCl 2 ] 2 to produce monomeric κ 3 -MesPN H PRuCl 2 that reacts with CO forming κ 3 -MesPN H PRu(CO)Cl 2 . Surprisingly, dehydrohalogenation of these complexes results in the activation of ortho methyl groups of the pincer ligands, rather than formation of κ 3 -RPNPRuLCl complexes. This results from transient κ 3 -RPNPRuLCl formation followed by 1,2-addition of an ortho C-H bond across the Ru-amide bond. The transient amide complex of κ 4 -4mXPN H PRu(PMe 3 )Cl was trapped with CO forming κ 3 -4mXPNPRu(PMe 3 )(CO)Cl. In contrast, κ 4 -MesPNHPRu(CO)Cl does not react with ligands to trap the expected amide complex of reverse C-H addition. Instead, CO and PMe 3 displace the chloride ligand forming cationic complexes. In both cases, hemi-lability of the pincer ligand was observed spectroscopically. In conclusion, the new complexes serve as precursors to moderately active catalysts for the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of n-butanol.

Influence of ion site occupancies on the unit cell parameters, specific volumes, and densities of M 8 (AlSiO 4 ) 6 X 2 sodalites where M = Li, Na, K, Rb, and Ag and X = Cl, Br, and I

Here, this paper discusses the effects of composition on the unit cell parameter (a), unit cell volume (V), specific volume (v), and density (ρ) of various sodalite compositions including $M^+_8$(AlSiO 4 ) 6 Cl 2 (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, and/or Ag) and Na8(AlSiO 4 ) 6 $X^-_2$(X = Cl, Br, and/or I). Compositional models were developed, and the results show that the models are successful at predicting a, V, and v (and thus ρ) within the compositional range available in the literature. Discussion is included on the correlation between the ionic radii of the alkali metals and halides in the sodalite β-cages and the measured values of a, V, v, and ρ. The data show linear increases in a and ρ with increases in the average ionic radii of the M + and X - constituents (data for v show a linear decrease).

Highly efficient, rapid, and concurrent removal of toxic heavy metals by the novel 2D hybrid LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ]

According to a United Nations report, by 2050 nearly six billion people worldwide will suffer from clean water scarcity. This is mostly because of the exponential proliferation of world population, urbanization, industrialization, and water pollution. Heavy metals are common water pollutants that can pose grave public health consequences. Existing water purification systems are lack of materials that have the potential for quick, simultaneous, efficient, and cost-efficient removal of numerous toxic metals from wastewater. Here, in this work, we report the design and synthesis of an economically viable Layered Double Hydroxides - Stannic Sulfide, LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] that exhibits a rapid, efficient, selective, and concurrent removal of Cu 2+ , Ag + , Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Hg 2+ from parts per million (ppm) level to below 5 parts per billion (ppb) satisfying World Health Organization’s (WHO) safe drinking water limit. Moreover, LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] shows exceptionally high removal efficiencies of the above metals in acidic, neutral, and basic conditions. LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] also demonstrates enormous sorption capacities of 378, 978, 332, 579, and 666 mg/g for Cu 2+ , Ag + , Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Hg 2+ , respectively. Remarkably, LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] displays extraordinary tolerance to the concentrations of Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl - , CO 3 2– , NO 3 – ,and SO 4 2- , and other constituents in tap and river water, it efficiently sequestrates Cu 2+ , Ag + , Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Hg 2+ from ppm to safe drinking water levels in minutes. LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] shows pseudo-second-order sorption kinetics suggesting chemisorption adsorption mechanism involving M–S bonding. Altogether, the regeneratable LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] becomes an exceptional material that shows ultrahigh removal, unprecedented selectivity, rapid adsorption kinetics, wide pH stability, and a massive adsorption capacity. The integration of these features places LDH–[Sn 2 S 6 ] at the top of all adsorbents known to date and thus could be used for wastewater purifications.

Locating anionic hydrogen in Ba 3 (Yb,Lu) 2 O 5 H 2 : A combined approach of X-ray diffraction, crystal chemistry, and DFT calculations

By a combination of x-ray diffraction, structural chemistry, and DFT calculations, the presence and location of anionic hydrogen in the two new, layered lanthanide oxyhydrides, Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 H 2 (Ln = Yb, Lu) is inferred. Single crystals of the compounds have been synthesized from a molten barium flux with the addition of small amounts of BaH 2 . These phases crystallize in space group I4/mmm (#139, Z = 2) with lattice parameters a = 4.3336(2) Å and c = 22.7197(6) Å, and a = 4.3291(1) Å and c = 22.597(1) Å, respectively. The Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 H 2 phases comprise two different structural moieties: a perovskite double layer of stoichiometry Ba 2 Ln 2 O 5 H – formed by corner-connected LnO 5 tetragonal bi-pyramids with a terminating hydrogen anion, and a puckered rocksalt-type (BaH) + layer that is stretched along the c-axis. DFT calculations were used to arrive at hydrogen positions that minimize energy and are consistent with structural chemistry principles. Furthermore, the calculations show that the valence band edge is dominated by oxygen 2p orbitals with hydrogen 1s states admixed. The conduction band is formed by barium 5d-orbitals and Lu (Yb) 5d-orbitals. These are characteristics of materials with anionic H – . These new phases are isostructural with the Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 Cl 2 (Ln = Gd–Lu) family of compounds with the chlorine atom in the same apical position as the hydrogen atom. Finally, steric effects limit the size of the lanthanide ion for Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 H 2 .

Functionalization of Electrodes with Tunable [EMIM] x [Cl] x +1 – Ionic Liquid Clusters for Electrochemical Separations

Functionalization of electrodes with clusters of hydrophobic molecules may improve the energy efficiency and selectivity of electrochemical separations by modulating the desolvation process occurring at the interface. Ionic liquids (IL), which have a broad range of compositions and properties, are potential candidates for controlling the transport, desolvation, and adsorption of target ions at electrochemical interfaces. We report a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the structure, stability, and selective adsorption properties of the IL clusters 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [EMIM] x [Cl] x+1 - (x = 1 – 10) and demonstrate their ability to adsorb and separate ions from solution. The structure and stability of the IL clusters are determined experimentally using high-mass-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, collision-induced dissociation, and negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. Global optimization theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations provide molecular-level insight into the bonding and structural fluxionality of these species. Ion soft landing is used to selectively functionalize the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) working electrodes with [EMIM] 1 [Cl] 2 - , [EMIM] 3 [Cl] 4 - , and [EMIM] 5 [Cl] 6 - clusters. Kelvin probe microscopy provides insight into the relative stability of the clusters on HOPG and their effect on the work function of IL-functionalized electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry measurements reveal irreversible adsorption of Fe(CN) 6 4-/3- anions during redox cycling, while electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicates a substantial decrease in the electron transfer resistance of the IL-functionalized electrodes due to adsorption of Fe(CN) 6 4-/3- . Overall, our findings demonstrate that IL clusters with different size and stoichiometry may be used to increase the efficiency of electrochemical separations, opening new horizons in selective electrode functionalization.

Modular Assembly of FTO|Chromophore-Catalyst Hierarchical Films Based on Strong Dipole Interactions

Here, we have designed and characterized modular self-assembled hierarchical films containing a molecular catalyst tethered to an anchoring molecule by means of dipole-induced dipole interactions. In order to do so, two new Co III -based molecular catalyst candidates were designed, namely, [Co III L 1 (pyrr) 2 ]ClO 4 (Co1) and [Co III L 2 (pyrr) 2 ]ClO 4 (Co2), where L 1 and L 2 are the respective deprotonated forms of N,N′-[4,5-bis(dodecyloxy)-1,2-phenylene]dipicolinamide and N,N′-[4,5-bis(methoxyethoxy)-1,2-phenylene]dipicolinamide and were characterized by electrochemical, electronic, and film formation properties. Species Co1 and Co2 were deposited onto an anchor molecule such as octylphosphonic acid (OPA) or the chromophoric [Ru II (bpy PO3H ) 2 (bpy C7 )]Cl 2 (Ru) previously attached onto conductive fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO). Four hierarchical films of the form substrate|anchor-catalyst were obtained, namely, FTO|OPA-Co1, FTO|OPA-Co2, FTO|Ru-Co1, and FTO|Ru-Co2, and the role of dipole-dipole interactions between anchor and catalyst modules was assessed. These newly synthesized hierarchical films were characterized by a host of surface-specific methods that include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ellipsometry, X-ray fluorescence, and water contact angle, thus enabling an unprecedented level of analysis. Compared to the weak C-H van der Waals interactions exhibited by Co1, the presence of alkoxy chains in Co2 ensures stronger dipole-dipole interactions with the alkyl chain of the anchors due to O···H formation. The persistence of their redox properties, which include metal oxidation, and directionality of electron transport were probed suggesting direct relevance to catalytic processes such as water oxidation.

Doubly Interpenetrated Metal-Organic Framework of pcu Topology for Selective Separation of Propylene from Propane

We report that adsorptive separation is an appealing alternative technology to reduce the high energy and capital cost of the distillation separation of propylene/propane; however, it is very challenging to realize. A new flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) material [Zn 2 (BDC-Cl) 2 (Py 2 TTz)] with a doubly interpenetrated pillared paddle wheel structure of pcu (primitive cubic) topology has been realized for this difficult separation for the first time. Through a judicious choice of linkers, the framework has small pore apertures that lead to much more propylene adsorption than propane. The selective adsorption relies on the sieving effect of the flexible framework. The column breakthrough experiment further demonstrated that efficient separation can be achieved under dynamic conditions.

Supramolecular Metal Halide Complexes for High-Temperature Nonlinear Optical Switches

Nonlinear optical (NLO) switching materials, which exhibit reversible intensity modulation in response to thermal stimuli, have found extensive applications across diverse fields, including sensing, photoelectronics, and photonic applications. While significant progress has been made in solid-state NLO switching materials, these materials typically showcase their highest NLO performance near room temperature. However, this performance drastically deteriorates upon heating, primarily due to the phase transition undergone by the materials from non-centrosymmetric to centrosymmetric phase. Here, we introduce a new class of NLO switching materials, solid-state supramolecular compounds 18-Crown-6 ether@Cu 2 Cl 4 ·4H 2 O (1·4H 2 O), exhibiting reversible and stable NLO switching when subjected to near-infrared (NIR) photoexcitation and/or thermal stimuli. The reversible crystal structure in response to external stimuli is attributed to the presence of a weakly coordinated bridging water molecule, facilitated by hydrogen bonding/chelation interactions between the metal halide and crown-ether supramolecules. We observed an exceptionally high second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal under continuous photoexcitation, even at temperatures exceeding 110°C. In addition, the bridging water molecules within the complex can be released and recaptured in a fully reversible manner, all without requiring excessive energy input. This feature allows for precise control of SHG signal activation and deactivation through structural transformations, resulting in a high-contrast off/on ratio, reaching values in the million-fold range.

Back in bismuth: controlling triplet energy transfer, phosphorescence, and radioluminescence via supramolecular interactions

Five bismuth(III)-organic phases that consist of supramolecular assemblies of Bi-2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate structural units and substituted 1,10-phenanthroline molecules (R-Phen; R = H, 5-methyl, 5-chloro, 2,9-dimethyl, and 2,9-dicholoro) were synthesized. All five compounds exhibited solid-state photoluminescence. Whereas the phases containing 2,9-dimethylphenanthroline (Me 2 Phen) and 2,9-dichlorophenanthroline (Cl 2 Phen) displayed solely phosphorescence, the structures built from 5-methylphenanthroline and 5-chlorophenanthroline showed exclusively fluorescence. The remaining phase, consisting of phenanthrolinium, exhibited both fluorescence and phosphoresence. It was determined that phosphorescence arises from triplet state emission (T 1 → S 0 ) of substituted R-Phen units while fluorescence originates from Bi(III) coordinated pyrdinedicarboxylate ligands. Bismuth induces spin–orbit coupling for triplet state population and additionally acts as a heavy metal attenuator for X-ray luminescence (radioluminescence). The electronic structure was mapped and excitation pathway investigated via density functional theory calculations. Computational findings indicate favorable conditions for triplet energy transfer from donor Bi(III)-organic units to acceptor R-Phen derivatives. It is proposed that for the phosphorescent compounds, strong π–π interactions promote electron transfer, whereas the compounds that exhibit purely fluorescence lack any such π–π interactions and undergo triplet energy transfer. In conclusion, these results provide a useful platform for probing structure–property relationships of luminescent bismuth-organic compounds, and specifically highlights the role of noncovalent interactions in achieving room temperature phosphorescence and radioluminescence.

22 K superconductivity in Ba Fe 2 As 2 exposed to F 2

Several previous reports on undoped AEFe 2 As 2 (AE = alkaline earth metal) point to drops in resistivity indicative of possible superconductivity and some degree of Meissner effect in the magnetic susceptibility. Also, based on both resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, controlled exposure to water vapor has been shown to induce superconductivity in AEFe 2 As 2 . In our study, BaFe 2 As 2 single crystals grown using the self-flux method showed a full resistive drop around 22 K and magnetic shielding, when exposed to fluorine gas postgrowth. Our measurements indicate electron (donor) doping via atomic substitution of F for As is concurrent with the observed superconductivity, which sheds light on the likely effect of exposure to water vapor in previous work. Like doping experiments (such as substitution of Co for Fe, P for As, or K for Ba) in AEFe 2 As 2 to date, the present work is consistent with suppression of the spin density wave transition coincident with the appearance of T c . In addition to answering the puzzle of superconductivity in undoped or water vapor exposed AEF 2 As 2 , our results also represent a fast (20 min exposure to 5% F in He) and reliable method suitable for inducing superconductivity in thin films of AEFe 2 As 2 . As a result, some supportive work on BaFe 2 As 2 exposed to Cl 2 is also presented.

Study of Ionic Mass Transport in Non-Conventional Electrolytes for Energy Storage and Carbon Capture Applications

In the field of energy storage, electrolytes are the materials or liquids used to transport ions or redox active chemicals to facilitate an electrochemical process. Conventional electrolytes are the most common form of electrolyte used and consist of salts dissolved in a liquid solvent medium. While conventional electrolytes are generally inexpensive and work well with lithium-ion batteries, they have many shortfalls however, such as corrosion of the cell, flammability, toxicity, price, and incompatibility with other metals. This project investigates the fundamental properties in nonconventional electrolyte systems with an initial focus on eutectics being made. Using electrochemical methods ( Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Impedance, Conductance, etc.), we are studying the study of electrolyte systems containing ions used for thermal, chemical, or electrochemical energy storage such as Li + , Mg 2+ , Na + , K + , Al 3+ , CO 3 2- , Cl - , and O 2- . This research looks at how ion mobility effects the electrochemical characteristics and properties in green energy applications.
