A new quinoline-based cobalt( II ) catalyst capable of bifunctional water splitting

We report on a new water-soluble cobalt( II ) complex capable of water splitting bifunctionality, i.e., water reduction and water oxidation. The species [Co II (L Qpy )H 2 O]ClO 4 (1), where L Qpy is the deprotonated form of the new tripodal ligand N 1 ,N 1 -bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-N 2 -(quinolin-8-yl)benzene-1,2-diamine, HL Qpy , was developed aiming to replace an oxidation prone methylene group by a sturdy and redox stable quinoline. The molecular and electronic structures of 1 were evaluated by multiple spectroscopic, spectrometric, electrochemical and computational methods, and detailed pre- and post-catalytic studies were conducted to ascertain the molecular nature of the conversions. Complex 1 performs water reduction at a low onset overpotential (η) of 0.65 V at pH 7, reaching TON 3h 2900 (TOF 970 h −1 ) and TON 18h 12 100 (TOF 672 h −1 ) with up to 98% faradaic efficiency (FE). Species 1 also promotes water oxidation at η = 0.34 V under pH 8, achieving TON 3h 193 (TOF 64 h −1 ) at 84% FE. Experimental and DFT results enabled us to propose reaction intermediates and mechanisms.

Tuneable electronic coupling in linked bis(cubane) cobalt-oxo clusters

A family of cobalt-oxo bis(cubane) complexes wherein each subunit is derived from the Co 4 O 4 cubane, a known water oxidation catalyst, was synthesized. Both 4,4′-bipyrdine and pyrazine were demonstrated to serve as viable bridging ligands. Through an analysis of their half-wave splitting potentials, it was determined that pyrazine-bridged bis(cubane)s exhibit inter-cubane electronic coupling, and that this coupling may be tuned through ligand substitution. Electrostatic contributions to the half-wave splitting potentials were evaluated and found to result in “non-conformist” behavior related to the ion-pairing ability of the electrolytes.

Synthesis of cobalt grown from Co-S eutectic in high magnetic fields

Samples of Co were grown directly in the ferromagnetic state under equilibrium conditions using a cobalt sulfide flux. Magnetic fields up to 9 T were applied during growth, and isolated Co products exhibit progressively elongated morphologies, from cubes to rectangular rods to needle-like tendrils with poorly-defined facets. The degree of elongation of the major axis was found to correlate with magnetic field direction, strength, and gradient. Two-dimensional X-ray diffraction data indicate some level of polycrystalline-like samples, and quantitative analyses (Le Bail and Rietveld) of the one-dimensional data confirm the presence of hcp and fcc phases. The magnetic responses indicate a partial alignment of the magnetic easy-axis of the hcp phase along the magnetic field present during growth.

Machine learning-accelerated discovery of iron cobalt phosphides as rare-earth-free magnets

Here, the discovery of rare-earth-free permanent magnets has been a goal of scientists for decades. The absence of rare-earth elements will alleviate a pressing concern about the availability of rare-earth elements used in permanent magnets. These magnets are crucial for applications such as wind turbines, electric cars, and memory devices. Rare-earth magnets are special owing to a large magnetic anisotropy energy (K 1 ). In contrast, iron cobalt phosphides hold promise since doping P into cubic FeCo can induce anisotropy, leading to a large coercivity, without introducing rare-earth elements. We present a comprehensive search over the Fe-Co-P ternary space for magnets, utilizing recently developed adaptive machine learning feedback to efficiently screen over 850 000 structures. We focus on machine learning acceleration as a paradigm for materials design. Further adaptive genetic algorithm searches and first-principles calculations aid in the identification of 16 new structures below the known convex hull. Five of them possess high magnetic polarization (J s > 1 T). The structures with desirable magnetic properties center on (Fe,Co) 2⁢ P. This supports conventional wisdom, which focuses on the mixture of the two known end compounds: Fe 2 ⁢P and Co 2 ⁢P. Our work provides guidance for synthesis. We find Fe 7 ⁢CoP 4 shows the most promise (J s = 1.03T and K 1 = 0.83MJ/m 3 ).

North America’s Potential for an Environmentally Sustainable Nickel, Manganese, and Cobalt Battery Value Chain

The Detroit Big Three General Motors (GMs), Ford, and Stellantis predict that electric vehicle (EV) sales will comprise 40–50% of the annual vehicle sales by 2030. Among the key components of LIBs, the LiNixMnyCo1−x−yO2 cathode, which comprises nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) in various stoichiometric ratios, is widely used in EV batteries. This review reveals NMC cathodes from laboratory research. Furthermore, this study examines the environmental effect of NMC cathode production for EV batteries (including coating technologies), encompassing aspects such as energy consumption, water usage, and air emissions. Although gaps persist in NMC cathode environmental assessments (NMC111, NMC532, NMC622, and NMC811), limited life cycle assessments “(LCA)” have been conducted. Most available data originate from Asia (primarily China), accounting for 85% of the production of EV LIB cathode materials. The concept of battery passports for data collection on LIB components has been proposed to facilitate material traceability as a system for ensuring a sustainable supply chain for critical minerals. The automotive industry’s shift to electrification necessitates a sustainable supply chain from mine to vehicle end-of-life. As the critical mineral supply moves from Asia to North America, environmentally friendly industrial methods must be studied to provide this supply chain direction.
