First Measurement of $π^+$-Ar and $p$-Ar Total Inelastic Cross Sections in the Sub-GeV Energy Regime with ProtoDUNE-SP Data

The ProtoDUNE-SP detector, a kiloton-scale prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), is the largest liquid argon time projection chamber built to date. Operated at CERN from 2018 to 2020, it collected both cosmic-ray data and a beam consisting of positively-charged particles with discrete momentum settings across a range of 0.3 GeV/$c$ to 7 GeV/$c$. In this letter, we report the total inelastic cross section measurements for $π^+$-Ar and $p$-Ar interactions using selected $π^+$ and proton samples from the 1 GeV/$c$ beam data. These results provide the first measurement of the total inelastic cross sections for $π^+$-Ar in the 500-900 MeV kinetic energy range and for $p$-Ar below 450 MeV, both of which are directly relevant to the DUNE energy range. The measured cross sections are consistent with predictions and provide a dataset that was previously unavailable for argon targets. These measurements are essential for constraining neutrino-argon interaction models, which are crucial for the precision physics goals of the upcoming DUNE experiment.

First Differential Measurement of the Single 𝜋 + Production Cross Section in Neutrino Neutral-Current Scattering

Since its first observation in the 1970s, neutrino-induced neutral-current single positive pion production (NC⁢1⁢𝜋 + ) has remained an elusive and poorly understood interaction channel. This process is a significant background in neutrino oscillation experiments and studying it further is critical for the physics program of next-generation accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. In this Letter, we present the first double-differential cross-section measurement of NC⁢1⁢𝜋 + interactions using data from the ND280 detector of the T2K experiment collected in 𝜈-beam mode. The measured flux-averaged integrated cross section is 𝜎 = (6.07 ± 1.22) × 10 −41 cm 2 /nucleon. We compare the results on a hydrocarbon target to the predictions of several neutrino interaction generators and final-state-interaction models. While model predictions agree with the differential results, the data show a weak preference for a cross-section normalization approximately 30% higher than predicted by most models studied in this Letter.

Measurements of Zγ +jets differential cross sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Differential cross-section measurements of $Zγ$ production in association with hadronic jets are presented, using the full 139 fb -1 dataset of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton–proton collisions collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the LHC. Distributions are measured using events in which the $Z$ boson decays leptonically and the photon is usually radiated from an initial-state quark. Measurements are made in both one and two observables, including those sensitive to the hard scattering in the event and others which probe additional soft and collinear radiation. Different Standard Model predictions, from both parton-shower Monte Carlo simulation and fixed-order QCD calculations, are compared with the measurements. In general, good agreement is observed between data and predictions from MATRIX and MiNNLO PS , as well as next-to-leading-order predictions from MADGRAPH5_AMC@NLO and SHERPA.

Proposed Methodology for Evaluating and Validating TSLs [Slides]

This presentation begins by providing an overview of the research and discusses recent efforts in validating thermal neutron scattering cross sections, including differential cross section measurements at ORNL for evaluation and validation, total cross section measurements at RPI, pulsed-neutron die-away experiments at LLNL, and integral criticality experiments by LLNL. The presentation also proposes a methodology not only for validating thermal scattering files that utilizes all available experimental data, but also for evaluating new libraries as demonstrated on polystyrene. In conclusion, polystyrene evaluation was conducted using multiple experiments, including differential and integral. The proposed methodology has been shown to improve neutron transport and files have been submitted to NNDC for inclusion in ENDF/B-VIII.1 release. MCT-012 & PCM-002 has been relatively insensitive to changes in $\mathcal{S}(α,β)$. The research found that differences in differential results don’t always propagate to differences in integral results, hence why evaluation of differential data important. Future work on the project is also discussed.

Measurement of the double-differential cross section of muon-neutrino charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy in the NOvA Near Detector

The NOvA collaboration reports cross-section measurements for $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy (maximum kinetic energy of 250 MeV for protons and 175 MeV for pions) in the NOvA Near Detector. The results are presented as a double-differential cross section as a function of the direct observables of the final-state muon kinematics. Results are also presented as a single-differential cross section as a function of the derived square of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^{2}$, and as a function of the derived neutrino energy. The data correspond to an accumulated 8.09$\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) in the neutrino mode of the NuMI beam, with a narrow band of neutrino energies peaked at 1.8 GeV. The analysis provides a sample of neutrino-nucleus interactions with an enhanced fraction of quasi-elastic and two-particle-two-hole (2p2h) interactions. This enhancement allows quantitative comparisons with various nuclear models. We find strong disagreement between data and theory-based models in various regions of the muon kinematic phase space, especially in the forward muon direction.

Measurements of the 96 Zr(α,n) cross section for astrophysics and applications

The reaction 96 Zr(α,n) plays an important role in ν-driven wind nucleosynthesis in core-collapse supernovae and is a possible avenue for medical isotope production. Here, cross section measurements were performed using the activation technique at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory. Results were analyzed along with world data on the 96 Zr(α, n) cross section and 96 Zr(α, α) differential cross section using large-scale Hauser-Feshbach calculations. We find general agreement between our data, previous measurements, and a statistical description of the reaction. However, we find a larger cross section at low energies compared to prior experimental results, allowing for a larger astrophysical reaction rate. This may impact results of core-collapse supernova ν-driven wind nucleosynthesis calculations, but does not significantly alter prior conclusions about 99 Mo production for medical physics applications. The results from our large-scale Hauser-Feshbach calculations demonstrate that phenomenological optical potentials may yet be adequate to describe (α, n) reactions of interest for ν-driven wind nucleosynthesis, albeit with regionally-adjusted model parameters.

Observation of VVZ production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the production of three massive vector bosons, VVZ(V = W, Z) , in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is performed using data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events produced in the leptonic final states WWZ → ℓvℓvℓℓ (ℓ = e,μ), WZZ → ℓvℓℓℓℓ, ZZZ → ℓℓℓℓℓ, and the semileptonic final states WWZ → qq ℓvℓℓ and WZZ → ℓv qq ℓℓ, are analysed. The measured cross section for the pp → VVZ process is 660$^{+93}_{-90}$(stat.)$^{+80}_{-81}$(syst.) fb, and the observed (expected) significance is 6.4 (4.7) standard deviations, representing the observation of VVZ production. In addition, the measured cross section for the pp → WWZ process is 442 ± 94(stat.)$^{+60}_{-52}$(syst.) fb, and the observed (expected) significance is 4.4 (3.6) standard deviations, representing evidence of WWZ production. The measured cross sections are consistent with the Standard Model predictions. Constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model are also derived in the effective field theory framework by setting limits on Wilson coefficients for dimension-8 operators describing anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings.

Measurement of muon neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike cross section using off-axis NuMI beam at ICARUS

This paper presents the first neutrino cross-section measurement from the ICARUS detector at Fermilab, using Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam data collected from two beam operation periods corresponding to 2.5 × 10 20 protons-on-target in neutrino beam mode. The signal is defined by events with no pions produced in the final state, a topology dominated by charged-current quasielasticlike signatures. The measurement is reported as flux-averaged differential cross sections as functions of kinematic variables that provide sensitivity to the complex nuclear effects that often dominate the systematic uncertainty budgets of neutrino oscillation measurements. Specifically, this work reports cross sections in two angular variables—the angle of the outgoing lepton and the opening angle between the lepton and leading proton—and two variables characterizing the kinematic imbalance between the muon and proton in the plane transverse to the incoming neutrino. These results are compared against predictions from a variety of neutrino event generators, with p values calculated between the extracted cross sections and each prediction. Overall, the predictions agree with the data; however, the current budget of uncertainties does not yet provide sufficient discriminating power to favor a specific model.

Neural posterior unfolding

Differential cross section measurements are the currency of scientific exchange in particle and nuclear physics. A key challenge for these analyses is the correction for detector distortions, known as deconvolution or unfolding. Binned unfolding of cross section measurements traditionally rely on the regularized inversion of the response matrix that represents the detector response, mapping pre-detector (`particle level') observables to post-detector (`detector level') observables. In this paper we introduce Neural Posterior Unfolding, a modern, Bayesian approach that leverages normalizing flows for unfolding. By using normalizing flows for neural posterior estimation, NPU offers several key advantages including implicit regularization through the neural network architecture, fast amortized inference that eliminates the need for repeated retraining, and direct access to the full uncertainty in the unfolded result. In addition to introducing NPU, we implement a classical Bayesian unfolding method called Fully Bayesian Unfolding (FBU) in modern Python so it can also be studied. These tools are validated on simple Gaussian examples and then tested on simulated jet substructure examples from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We find that the Bayesian methods are effective and worth additional development to be analysis ready for cross section measurements at the LHC and beyond.

Measurement of single- and double-differential cross sections for mesonless charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with final-state protons using the MicroBooNE detector

Charged-current neutrino interactions with final states containing zero mesons and at least one proton are of high interest for current and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, we have obtained the first double-differential cross-section measurements of this channel for muon neutrino scattering on an argon target with a leading proton momentum threshold of 0.25 GeV/𝑐. We also report a flux-averaged total cross section of 𝜎 = (11.8±1.2) × 10 −38 cm 2 /Ar and several single-differential measurements which extend and improve upon previous results. Statistical and systematic uncertainties are quantified with a full treatment of correlations across 359 kinematic bins, including correlations between distributions describing different observables. The resulting dataset provides the most detailed information obtained to date for testing models of mesonless neutrino-argon scattering.

Measurement of the cross section of top quark pairs produced in association with a Photon in Lepton +Jets events at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with full Run II CMS data

The inclusive production cross section of top quark pairs in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC with 13 TeV energy using the full RunII data collected by CMS in 2016, 2017, and 2018 with a total corresponding integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. The relative fraction of t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ events normalized to inclusive t$ \bar{t}$ production is measured. The cross section measurement provides important information about the electromagnetic coupling of the standard model top quark and is sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is carried out in the in semileptonic decay channel with a well isolated high P$ \_{T}$ lepton (electron and muon), at least four jets out of which at least one must be b-tagged, and an isolated photon. Photons may be emitted from initial state radiation, top quarks, and decay products of top quarks. The fiducial phase space with a photon of transverse momentum $ \ge$ 20 GeV and j\x11$ \eta$ <1.4441 is used. A simultaneous likelihood fit of control regions with the signal region is done to constraint the backgrounds and to extract the t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ cross section. The measurement of the ratio of t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ to t$ \bar{t}$ is $0.02055 \pm 0.00099$ (syst.) $ \pm 0.00099$ (stat.) in $e$ channel , 0.02156 $ \pm$ 0.00068 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.00068 (stat.) in $ \mu$ channel , and 0.02203 $ \pm$ 0.00064 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.00064 (stat.) in e + $ \mu$ channel , respectively. The measured inclusive cross section is 3.81 $ \pm$ 0.15 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.10 (stat.) pb in e channel , 3.87 $ \pm$ 0:11 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0:07 (stat.) pb in $ \mu$ channel , and 3.96 $ \pm$ 0.10 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.06 (stat.) pb in e + $ \mu$ channel , respectively for full RunII data. The total inclusive cross section with a photon of transverse momentum $ \ge$ 20 GeV is found to be 3.96 $ \pm$ 0.10 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.06 (stat.) pb with full RunII CMS data. The results are in agreement with the standard model next to leading order prediction.

Test of CP-invariance of the Higgs boson in vector-boson fusion production and in its decay into four leptons

A search for CP violation in the decay kinematics and vector-boson fusion production of the Higgs boson is performed in the H → ZZ * → 4 ℓ ( ℓ = e, μ ) decay channel. The results are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . Matrix element-based optimal observables are used to constrain CP-odd couplings beyond the Standard Model in the framework of Standard Model effective field theory expressed in the Warsaw and Higgs bases. Differential fiducial cross-section measurements of the optimal observables are also performed, and a new fiducial cross-section measurement for vector-boson-fusion production is provided. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of a CP-even Higgs boson.

Inclusive and Inelastic Scattering in Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions

Neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements can provide both insights into nuclear physics and important data that can be used to improve model predictions used for neutrino oscillation physics. Two measurements of neutrino-nucleus cross sections were performed using data from the MINERvA experiment, each probing different classes of neutrino interactions. Double and single-differential flux-integrated measurements of inclusive charged current neutrino-nucleus cross sections at a peak neutrino energy of 3.5 GeV are presented as a function of the longitudinal and transverse momentum of the muon produced in the interaction. Additionally, an analysis of charged-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of muon neutrinos was performed in carbon, iron, lead and hydrocarbon in a neutrino beam with a peak energy of 6 GeV. Cross sections were measured in each material, and ratios were also taken between the cross sections of each of the materials and hydrocarbon, allowing for examination of nuclear dependencies of the neutrino cross section. Absolute DIS cross sections as a function of neutrino energy and flux integrated differential cross sections as a function of the Bjorken-x scaling variable were both measured.

Measurement of Multi-Proton Zero Pion Final States with the NuMI Neutrino Beam at ICARUS

Evidence suggests that charge-parity (CP) symmetry, or the principle that matter and antimatter must obey the same physics, might be violated in neutrino flavor mixing. The next-generation long-baseline experiment DUNE is designed to confirm whether or not neutrinos oscillate differently from antineutrinos. The magnitude of systematic uncertainties contributing to current long-baseline oscillation measurements, if left unimproved, is enough to jeopardize DUNE's ability to measure CP violation. Neutrino cross section measurements on argon targets are an essential input for improving neutrino interaction modelling and reducing the systematic uncertainties before DUNE turns on. The ICARUS experiment at Fermilab is well suited perform such measurements due to the NuMI neutrino beam providing neutrinos at the same energy as DUNE's first oscillation maximum. This work presents a measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions with multiple energetic protons and zero final state mesons in ICARUS. Multi-proton topologies are sensitive to contributions from two-particle two hole effects as well as resonant pion production and subsequent absorption via final state interactions (FSI) within the argon nucleus. Single-differential cross sections are measured in lab-frame opening angles and transverse kinematic imbalance variables, characterizing the initial sate momentum sharing between correlated nucleons and strength of FSI in argon.
