Planning for a data base system to support satellite conceptual design

The conceptual design of an automated satellite design data base system is presented. The satellite catalog in the system includes data for all earth orbital satellites funded to the hardware stage for launch between 1970 and 1980, and provides a concise compilation of satellite capabilities and design parameters. The cost of satellite subsystems and components will be added to the base. Data elements are listed and discussed. Sensor and science and applications opportunities catalogs will be included in the data system. Capabilities of the BASIS storage, retrieval, and analysis system are used in the system design.

Data base design for a worldwide multicrop information system

A description of the USDA Application Test System data base design approach and resources is presented. The data is described in detail by category, with emphasis on those characteristics which influenced the design most. It was concluded that the use of a generalized data base in support of crop assessment is a sound concept. The IDMS11 minicomputer base system is recommended for this purpose.

Evaluation of the international reference ionosphere with the large AE-C and DE2 data bases

Empirical models such as the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) are synthesized from large data bases. They can be viewed as analytical tools to facilitate accessing information stored in the data banks. However, in establishing the models, one has to apply smoothing and averaging procedures that in effect reduce the original information content. This study evaluates the agreement between the data base and the model at two opposite extremes of time resolution. Electron densities and temperatures in the altitude range of 300 to 400 km predicted by the IRI and measured by the AE-C and DE 2 satellites on the level of individual orbits as well as on the level of mission averages are compared. Whereas the averages show excellent agreement, the comparison for individual measurements indicates the limitations of empirical models.

Archive data base and handling system for the Orbiter flying qualities experiment program

The OFQ archives data base and handling system assembled as part of the Orbiter Flying Qualities (OFQ) research of the Orbiter Experiments Program (EOX) are described. The purpose of the OFQ archives is to preserve and document shuttle flight data relevant to vehicle dynamics, flight control, and flying qualities in a form that permits maximum use for qualified users. In their complete form, the OFQ archives contain descriptive text (general information about the flight, signal descriptions and units) as well as numerical time history data. Since the shuttle program is so complex, the official data base contains thousands of signals and very complex entries are required to obtain data. The OFQ archives are intended to provide flight phase oriented data subsets with relevant signals which are easily identified for flying qualities research.

The space shuttle ascent vehicle aerodynamic challenges configuration design and data base development

The phase B Space Shuttle systems definition studies resulted in a generic configuration consisting of a delta wing orbiter, and two solid rocket boosters (SRB) attached to an external fuel tank (ET). The initial challenge facing the aerodynamic community was aerodynamically optimizing, within limits, this configuration. As the Shuttle program developed and the sensitivities of the vehicle to aerodynamics were better understood the requirements of the aerodynamic data base grew. Adequately characterizing the vehicle to support the various design studies exploded the size of the data base to proportions that created a data modeling/management challenge for the aerodynamicist. The ascent aerodynamic data base originated primarily from wind tunnel test results. The complexity of the configuration rendered conventional analytic methods of little use. Initial wind tunnel tests provided results which included undesirable effects from model support tructure, inadequate element proximity, and inadequate plume simulation. The challenge to improve the quality of test results by determining the extent of these undesirable effects and subsequently develop testing techniques to eliminate them was imposed on the aerodynamic community. The challenges to the ascent aerodynamics community documented are unique due to the aerodynamic complexity of the Shuttle launch. Never before was such a complex vehicle aerodynamically characterized. The challenges were met with innovative engineering analyses/methodology development and wind tunnel testing techniques.

Galilean satellite multispectral data base production

A photometrically and geometrically reduced data base is being produced for the Galilean Satellites using Voyager Imaging data. The basic data set used is essentially all the useful satellite images returned by Voyager. Each frame was radiometrically calibrated and many are projected into cartographic formats. Mosaics of low, medium and high resolution frames being made for each satellite consist of registered digital images with intensity values scaled through a traceable calibration procedure to normal albedo values. Many of the mosaics are being made in two versions. One version is an albedo version and the second is a maximum discrimination version in which large variations in brightness across the picture are suppressed.

DABI: A data base for image analysis with nondeterministic inference capability

A description is given of the data base used in the perception subsystem of the Mars robot vehicle prototype being implemented at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This data base contains two types of information. The first is generic (uninstantiated, abstract) information that specifies the general rules of perception of objects in the expected environments. The second kind of information is a specific (instantiated) description of a structure, i.e., the properties and relations of objects in the specific case being analyzed. The generic knowledge can be used by the approximate reasoning subsystem to obtain information on the specific structures which is not directly measurable by the sensory instruments. Raw measurements are input either from the sensory instruments or a human operator using a CRT or a TTY.

MultiWaveLink: An interactive data base for the coordination of multiwavelength and multifacility observations

MultiWaveLink is an interactive, computerized data base that was developed to facilitate a multi-wavelength approach to studying astrophysical sources. It can be used to access information about multiwavelenth resources (observers, telescopes, data bases and analysis facilities) or to organize observing campaigns that require either many telescopes operating in different spectral regimes or a network of similar telescopes circumspanning the Earth.

Development of a digital geographic data base for resource planning in a wildland environment

Multiple resource planning requires the ability to access information for several parameters in a coordinated way. Attempts to do this manually, through the use of multiple transparent overlays or similar techniques can become awkward if there are more than a few parameters under consideration. One solution to this problem is to use a computer system to collect and organize the information into a data base that will make access and analysis easier, even for large numbers of parameters. The increase in the types and forms of remote sensing data and the decrease in costs for computer systems in the last decade has made this approach more popular than in the past. This paper describes the development of one such data base for the Big Basin Redwoods State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. The data base contains information for satellite spectral data, soil type, vegetation type, and hypsographic data and was developed for use in a cooperative project being conducted by personnel from the Remote Sensing Research Program and the California Department of Parks and Recreation

Filament wound data base development, revision 1

The objective was to update the present Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) baseline reentry aerodynamic data base and to develop a new reentry data base for the filament wound case SRB along with individual protuberance increments. Lockheed's procedures for performing these tasks are discussed. Free fall of the SRBs after separation from the Space Shuttle Launch Vehicle is completely uncontrolled. However, the SRBs must decelerate to a velocity and attitude that is suitable for parachute deployment. To determine the SRB reentry trajectory parameters, including the rate of deceleration and attitude history during free-fall, engineers at Marshall Space Flight Center are using a six-degree-of-freedom computer program to predict dynamic behavior. Static stability aerodynamic coefficients are part of the information required for input into this computer program. Lockheed analyzed the existing reentry aerodynamic data tape (Data Tape 5) for the current steel case SRB. This analysis resulted in the development of Data Tape 7.

A criterion based on an information theoretic measure for goodness of fit between classifier and data base

A criterion for characterizing an iteratively trained classifier is presented. The criterion is based on an information theoretic measure that is developed from modeling classifier training iterations as a set of cascaded channels. The criterion is formulated as a figure of merit and as a performance index to check the appropriateness of application of the characterized classifier to an unknown data base and for implementing classifier updates and data selection respectively.
