Radiation-Tolerant DC-DC Converters

A document discusses power converters suitable for space use that meet the DSCC MIL-PRF-38534 Appendix G radiation hardness level P classification. A method for qualifying commercially produced electronic parts for DC-DC converters per the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) radiation hardened assurance requirements was developed. Development and compliance testing of standard hybrid converters suitable for space use were completed for missions with total dose radiation requirements of up to 30 kRad. This innovation provides the same overall performance as standard hybrid converters, but includes assurance of radiation- tolerant design through components and design compliance testing. This availability of design-certified radiation-tolerant converters can significantly reduce total cost and delivery time for power converters for space applications that fit the appropriate DSCC classification (30 kRad).

Physics Based Electrolytic Capacitor Degradation Models for Prognostic Studies under Thermal Overstress

Electrolytic capacitors are used in several applications ranging from power supplies on safety critical avionics equipment to power drivers for electro-mechanical actuators. This makes them good candidates for prognostics and health management research. Prognostics provides a way to assess remaining useful life of components or systems based on their current state of health and their anticipated future use and operational conditions. Past experiences show that capacitors tend to degrade and fail faster under high electrical and thermal stress conditions that they are often subjected to during operations. In this work, we study the effects of accelerated aging due to thermal stress on different sets of capacitors under different conditions. Our focus is on deriving first principles degradation models for thermal stress conditions. Data collected from simultaneous experiments are used to validate the desired models. Our overall goal is to derive accurate models of capacitor degradation, and use them to predict performance changes in DC-DC converters.

Physics Based Modeling and Prognostics of Electrolytic Capacitors

This paper proposes first principles based modeling and prognostics approach for electrolytic capacitors. Electrolytic capacitors have become critical components in electronics systems in aeronautics and other domains. Degradations and faults in DC-DC converter unit propagates to the GPS and navigation subsystems and affects the overall solution. Capacitors and MOSFETs are the two major components, which cause degradations and failures in DC-DC converters. This type of capacitors are known for its low reliability and frequent breakdown on critical systems like power supplies of avionics equipment and electrical drivers of electromechanical actuators of control surfaces. Some of the more prevalent fault effects, such as a ripple voltage surge at the power supply output can cause glitches in the GPS position and velocity output, and this, in turn, if not corrected will propagate and distort the navigation solution.

Prognostics of Power Electronics, Methods and Validation Experiments

Abstract Failure of electronic devices is a concern for future electric aircrafts that will see an increase of electronics to drive and control safety-critical equipment throughout the aircraft. As a result, investigation of precursors to failure in electronics and prediction of remaining life of electronic components is of key importance. DC-DC power converters are power electronics systems employed typically as sourcing elements for avionics equipment. Current research efforts in prognostics for these power systems focuses on the identification of failure mechanisms and the development of accelerated aging methodologies and systems to accelerate the aging process of test devices, while continuously measuring key electrical and thermal parameters. Preliminary model-based prognostics algorithms have been developed making use of empirical degradation models and physics-inspired degradation model with focus on key components like electrolytic capacitors and power MOSFETs (metal-oxide-semiconductor-field-effect-transistor). This paper presents current results on the development of validation methods for prognostics algorithms of power electrolytic capacitors. Particularly, in the use of accelerated aging systems for algorithm validation. Validation of prognostics algorithms present difficulties in practice due to the lack of run-to-failure experiments in deployed systems. By using accelerated experiments, we circumvent this problem in order to define initial validation activities.

Low-Mass, Low-Power Hall Thruster System

NASA is developing an electric propulsion system capable of producing 20 mN thrust with input power up to 1,000 W and specific impulse ranging from 1,600 to 3,500 seconds. The key technical challenge is the target mass of 1 kg for the thruster and 2 kg for the power processing unit (PPU). In Phase I, Busek Company, Inc., developed an overall subsystem design for the thruster/cathode, PPU, and xenon feed system. This project demonstrated the feasibility of a low-mass power processing architecture that replaces four of the DC-DC converters of a typical PPU with a single multifunctional converter and a low-mass Hall thruster design employing permanent magnets. In Phase II, the team developed an engineering prototype model of its low-mass BHT-600 Hall thruster system, with the primary focus on the low-mass PPU and thruster. The goal was to develop an electric propulsion thruster with the appropriate specific impulse and propellant throughput to enable radioisotope electric propulsion (REP). This is important because REP offers the benefits of nuclear electric propulsion without the need for an excessively large spacecraft and power system.

Power Processing Units for High Powered Solar Electric Propulsion Using MPD Thrusters

The power of various multimegawatt (MMW) vehicles required for deep space missions such asthe Mars Missions in the stipulated time frame of years 2000-2015 ranges from 5 to 100 MWe. Thispaper summarizes an evaluation of high-power processing units (PPUs) for MMW solar electricpropulsion (SEP) vehicles using advanced magnetoplasma- dynamic (MPD) thrusters. Each PPUprovides DC-DC conversion and voltage matching between the phovoltaic power system and the MPDthrusters. The power system consists of DC-DC converter using MCTs. The PPUs are thencombined with contractors to provide PPU input and output isolation, and to allow switching betweenoperating and spare (redundant) PPUs and thrusters as needed. Based on analyses, it is found thatsignificant economies of scale are possible for PPUs that supply power to MPD thrusters operating at0.1 to 5 MWe per thruster.

Electric Aircraft Propulsion Power System Impedance Modelling Methodology

This paper describes techniques to be used to model megawatt Electrified Aircraft Propulsion (MW EAP) components, specifically motor/generators and inverters, DC-DC converters, and long power leads; resulting in impedance-based models which require no information from the component manufacturers. A custom curve fitting method is described, and an example power supply model is fit using measured impedance data. A method called subscale measurement, employing measurement equipment which has much lower power capability than the MW EAP system under test, is described, simulated, and used to generate an impedance transfer function model of a load. Finally, stability analysis using a Nyquist based approach is performed on the combined supply and load system, using the generated models.

Investigation into High Power Converter Topologies

The NESC commissioned NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to perform a study of high-power DC-DC converter topologies Why perform the study? • Several past contractor-led converter development programs have been plagued with development delays and cost overruns due to: • Poor initial design decisions • Complex requirements driving designs • Better inform government engineers about strengths and weaknesses of various topologies, learn about new topologies/design strategies. • Allow NASA to be better prepared for upcoming high power/high voltage power conversion systems work, such as Lunar and Martian surface missions, high power electric propulsion, as well as terrestrial systems, such as electrified aircraft. • Contractors often do not have the option to restart poor decisions – allows NASA to be better informed at the start of programs.

A GaN-based Four-Switch Buck-Boost Converter using Ripple Correlation Control for Maximum Power Point Tracking in Dynamic Deep Space Environments

As the demand for high-performance power conversion in spacecraft continues to grow and spacecraft mass and volume budgets become increasingly tight, it is essential to design DC-DC converters with higher efficiency and power density. Although photovoltaic (PV) efficiency has increased over time, solar irradiance and temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in deep space. This causes significant variations in the maximum power point (MPP) of the PV array, which can decrease the overall system efficiency unless accounted for. Thus, it is imperative to track the MPP of the PV panels to maintain optimal efficiency. This paper presents the experimental development of a four-switch, GaN-based buck-boost converter with an implementation of the Ripple Correlation Control (RCC) MPPT algorithm for dynamic deep space environments. Due to the use of GaN HEMTs, the experimental system achieves better efficiency and power density compared to the previous state of the art implementations. A simulation of the prototype buck-boost converter was implemented in SaberRD (Synopsis), and a digital design of the RCC-based MPPT controller utilizing the StateAMS tool is presented. The simulation results show that this controller swiftly and precisely converged to the MPP of the source PV panels in a dynamic solar irradiance condition.
