Does the upper main sequence extend across the whole H-R diagram

The effect of using Carson's (1976) radiative opacities in evolutionary sequences of stellar models has been studied over the mass range from 7 to 60 solar masses. The opacities are very large in the outer part of the envelope and induce such enormous radii for masses greater than about 30 solar masses for a heavy-element fraction of 0.02 or about 20 solar masses for a heavy-element fraction of 0.04 that the evolutionary tracks during the phase of core hydrogen burning extend across the whole H-R diagram. The choice of the Schwarschild or Ledoux criterion for convection makes very little difference for the behavior of the tracks. Evolution through the effective-temperature range (in logarithms) of 3.6 to 4.0 occurs in all cases on a rapid (secular) time scale. Core helium burning takes place exclusively in the red-supergiant configuration for stellar masses exceeding 8 solar masses (heavy-element fraction of 0.02) or 6 solar masses (heavy-element fraction of 0.04). These stellar models seem to be in significantly better agreement with the observed distribution of bright stars on the H-R diagram than are the older models based on the Cox-Stewart opacities. It can be inferred that a large envelope opacity (e.g., Carson's) exists and that substantial mass loss takes place in very massive late-type supergiants.

A universal structured-design diagramer

Program (FLOWCHARTER) generates standardized flowcharts and concordances for development and debugging of programs in any language. User describes programming-language grammar, providing syntax rules in Backus-Naur form (BNF), list of semantic rules, and set of concordance rules. Once grammar is described, user supplies only source code of program to be diagrammed. FLOWCHARTER automatically produces flow diagram and concordance. Source code for program is written for PASCAL Release 2 compiler, as distributed by University of Minnesota.

Transfer Function Bounds for Partial-unit-memory Convolutional Codes Based on Reduced State Diagram

The performance of a coding system consisting of a convolutional encoder and a Viterbi decoder is analytically found by the well-known transfer function bounding technique. For the partial-unit-memory byte-oriented convolutional encoder with m sub 0 binary memory cells and (k sub 0 m sub 0) inputs, a state diagram of 2(K) (sub 0) was for the transfer function bound. A reduced state diagram of (2 (m sub 0) +1) is used for easy evaluation of transfer function bounds for partial-unit-memory codes.

Theoretical flow regime diagrams for the AGCE

The major criterion for the design of the Atmospheric General Circulation Experiment is that it be possible to realize strong baroclinic instability in the apparatus. A spherical annulus configuration which allows only steady basic state flows was chosen for the first set of stability analyses. Baroclinic instability was found for this configuration and few results suggest a regime diagram very different from the cylindrical annulus regime diagram.

On the Role Played by Lines in Radiatively Driven Stellar Winds Depending on the Position of the Stars in the HR Diagram

The radiative force due to transfer in ultraviolet lines is always an important mechanism in hot star wind dynamics. However, it is not clear when it is the dominant mechanism and which are the noise parameters. To investigate the efficiency of purely radiative momentum/energy transfer in hot star winds and in various regions of the HR diagram, the Leroy and Lafon model was improved and put to its limits; correlations between the mass loss rate, the luminosity and other parameters and the theoretical and the observational results, looking for observed stars violating the model were compared. It is concluded that in widespread region of the HR diagram, line driven models are consistent with observations, the radiative equilibrium physics is relevant throughout the expanding atmospheres and the mass loss rate is quasilinearly correlated with the luminosity.

Generalized serial search code acquisition - The equivalent circular state diagram approach

A transform-domain method for deriving the generating function of the acquisition process resulting from an arbitrary serial search strategy is presented. The method relies on equivalent circular state diagrams, uses Mason's formula from flow-graph theory, and employs a minimum number of required parameters. The transform-domain approach is briefly described and the concept of equivalent circular state diagrams is introduced and exploited to derive the generating function and resulting mean acquisition time for three particular cases of interest, the continuous/center Z search, the broken/center Z search, and the expanding window search. An optimization of the latter technique is performed whereby the number of partial windows which minimizes the mean acquisition time is determined. The numerical results satisfy certain intuitive predictions and provide useful design guidelines for such systems.

Ratioed scatter diagrams - An erotetic method for phase identification on complex surfaces using scanning Auger microscopy

By ratioing multiple Auger intensities and plotting a two-dimensional occupational scatter diagram while digitally scanning across an area, the number and elemental association of surface phases can be determined. This can prove a useful tool in scanning Auger microscopic analysis of complex materials. The technique is illustrated by results from an anomalous region on the reaction zone of a SiC/Ti-6Al-4V metal matrix composite material. The anomalous region is shown to be a single phase associated with sulphur and phosphorus impurities. Imaging of a selected phase from the ratioed scatter diagram is possible and may be a useful technique for presenting multiple scanning Auger images.

The H-R diagram of O-type subdwarfs

A spectroscopic survey by Drilling (1983) of nonemission OB+ stars in the Case-Hamburg survey and its extension to b = + or - 30 deg for l = + or - 60 deg has turned up 12 hot, relatively bright O-type subdwarfs (V less than 13). The color temperatures of the subdwarf O stars are estimated at 60,000 to over 100,000 K. The loci or these objects are shown in the H-R diagram together with those of previously analyzed subdwarf O stars. The new hot subdwarfs occupy a previously empty region in the H-R diagram, filling the luminosity range from central stars to white dwarfs. This spread in luminosity is in agreement with their spectral appearance and indicates differences in their origin. The possible origins of these stars are briefly discussed.

A method for developing design diagrams for ceramic and glass materials using fatigue data

The service lifetime of glass and ceramic materials can be expressed as a plot of time-to-failure versus applied stress whose plot is parametric in percent probability of failure. This type of plot is called a design diagram. Confidence interval estimates for such plots depend on the type of test that is used to generate the data, on assumptions made concerning the statistical distribution of the test results, and on the type of analysis used. This report outlines the development of design diagrams for glass and ceramic materials in engineering terms using static or dynamic fatigue tests, assuming either no particular statistical distribution of test results or a Weibull distribution and using either median value or homologous ratio analysis of the test results.

Global petrologic variations of the Moon: A ternary-diagram approach

A ternary-diagram approach is used to show on a single map as much detailed geochemical information concerning petrologic variations within the lunar crust as is possible. The classification map shows the global spatial distributions of end-member compositions, the transitional spatial relations between end-member compositions, and quantitative estimates of relative proportions of each end member at each pixel location within the orbital groundtracks. The use of elemental ratios in this analysis, instead of the commonly used elemental bivariate diagrams, shows geologic information that is otherwise hidden in individual elemental databases.

Global petrologic variations on the moon - A ternary-diagram approach

An improved method for global petrologic mapping of the moon is presented, which uses a color-coded ternary diagram whose apexes are assigned the average Fe and Th/Ti ratio (normalized to chondrites) compositions of KREEP/Mg-suite rocks, mare basalts, and ferroan anorthosites. The composition of each pixel within these Apollo orbital gamma ray data bases is used to determine its position within the ternary diagram. The color corresponding to this ternary position is then placed on a classification map at that pixel's position within the orbital data bases. The resultant classification map shows spatial transitions among petrologic units, allows direct determination of the relative proportions of each end-member composition in a pixel, and provides more geologic information than can be obtained by using only the elemental data. The map units correspond remarkably well to previously delineated geologic provinces.

Phase diagrams and microscopic structures of (Hg,Cd)Te, (Hg,Zn)Te, and (Cd,Zn)Te alloys

A cluster theory based on the quasi-chemical approximation has been applied to study the local correlation bond-length distribution, and phase diagrams of the II-VI pseudobinary alloys Hg(1 - x)Cd(x)Te, Hg(1 - x)Zn(x)Te, and Cd(1 - x)Zn(x)Te. The cluster energy is calculated by letting it relax in some effective alloy medium and then considering the contributions from the strain and chemical energies. Two different models are presented to simulate the alloy medium. While both models show that all three alloys have nearly random distributions, the signs of the local correlation prove to be sensitive to the alloy medium chosen for the energy calculation. Good agreement is found between experiment and the bond lengths and phase diagrams in both models.

Determination of the Fe-Ni phase diagram below 400 C

Analytical EM techniques have been used to obtain a phase diagram for the Fe-Ni system below 400 C in the composition range from 0-52 wt pct Ni. The present diagram is consistent with all the phases observed in the Fe-Ni regions of meteorites. An asymmetric spinodal decomposition results in the expected two-phase isotropic microstructure. The present experimentally-determined miscibility gap below 400 C, located between 11.7 and 51.9 wt pct Ni at 200 C, is shown to be wider than the calculated miscibility gap.

Si-Ge-metal ternary phase diagram calculations

Solution crystal growth and doping conditions of Si-Ge alloys used for high-temperature thermoelectric generation are determined here. Liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) has been successfully employed recently to obtain single-crystalline homogeneous layers of Si-Ge solid solutions from a liquid metal solvent. Knowledge of Si-Ge-metallic solvent ternary phase diagrams is essential for further single-crystal growth development. Consequently, a thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to calculate the phase diagrams of the Si-Ge-M systems, including solid solubilities, where M is Al, Ga, In, Sn, Pb, Sb, or Bi. Good agreement between calculated liquidus and solidus data and experimental DTA and microprobe results was obtained. The results are used to compare the suitability of the different systems for crystal growth (by LPE-type process).

The Hubble diagram in V for supernovae of Type Ia and the value of H(0) therefrom

The Hubble diagram for Type I supernovae is derived in V and is summarized from the literature in B and in m(pg). The ridge line equation of the diagram in V and the calibration of the absolute magnitudes at maximum are presented. The intrinsic (B - V) color at B maximum light is 0.09 +/- 0.04 mag. The Virgo Cluster distance is derived and found to be 23.9 +/- 2.4 Mpc. This Virgo distance gives the cosmic value of the Hubble constant to be H(0) = 47 +/- 5 km/sec per Mpc.

RR Lyrae stars and color-magnitude diagram of the globular cluster NGC 6388

We present new V, B-V, and V, V-R color-magnitude diagrams for the bulge globular cluster NGC 6388. These diagrams indicate that NGC 6388 is a metal-rich globular cluster with color-magnitude morphology similar to that of 47 Tucanae. We have conducted a search for new variable stars close to NGC 6388, finding three new RR Lyrae stars. The membership of these and previously discovered RR Lyrae stars near NGC 6388 is discussed. There is reason for believing that some of these variables are nonmembers. Others, however, may belong to the cluster and may be similar to the RR Lyrae star V9 in 47 Tuc.

The gap in the color-magnitude diagram of NGC 2420: A test of convective overshoot and cluster age

Theoretical isochrones have been constructed using the OPAL opacities specifically to study the color-magnitude diagram of the open star cluster NGC 2420. This cluster provides a rare test of core convection in intermediate-mass stars. At the same time, its age is of interest because of its low metallicity and relatively high Galactic latitude for an open cluster. The excellent color-magnitude diagram constructed by Anthony-Twarog et al. (1990) allows a detailed fit of the isochrones to the photometric data. We discuss the importance of convective overshoot at the convective core edge in determining the morphology of the gap located near the main-sequence turnoff. We find that given the assumptions made in the models, a modest amount of overshoot (0.23 H(sub p)) is required for the best fit. Good agreement is achieved with all features of the turnoff gap for a cluster age of 2.4 +/- 0.2 Gyr. We note that a photometrically complete luminosity function near the main-sequence turnoff and subgiant branch would also provide an important test of the overshoot models.
