Precomputed state dependent digital control of a nuclear rocket engine

A control method applicable to multiple-input multiple-output nonlinear time-invariant systems in which desired behavior can be expressed explicitly as a trajectory in system state space is developed. The precomputed state dependent control method is basically a synthesis technique in which a suboptimal control law is developed off-line, prior to system operation. This law is obtained by conducting searches at a finite number of points in state space, in the vicinity of some desired trajectory, to obtain a set of constant control vectors which tend to return the system to the desired trajectory. These vectors are used to evaluate the unknown coefficients in a control law having an assumed hyperellipsoidal form. The resulting coefficients constitute the heart of the controller and are used in the on-line computation of control vectors. Two examples of PSDC are given prior to the more detailed description of the NERVA control system development.

Off-line data analysis and data reduction from digitally controlled random test systems.

This paper discusses the merits of employing the new computer-controlled random environment control systems for fast and efficient large-scale data analysis when they are not being used for test control. Hardware and software requirements are stated. Several of the more familiar frequency functions are defined from the Fourier coefficients, the main product of the Fourier processors used in these control systems. Another function, the probability density function, is defined and suggestions for its application are made. An analysis example is presented. Some programming tips are listed, and the accuracy and reliability of frequency analysis measurements are considered.

Digital control of high-intensity acoustic testing

A high intensity acoustic test system is reported that consists of a reverberation room measuring 18 feet wide by 21 feet long by 26 feet high, with an internal volume of 10,900 cubic feet. The room is rectangular in shape. Acoustic energy is supplied through two 50-Hz cutoff exponential horns about 12 feet long. Each of the two horns has two transducers rated at 4000 acoustic watts each. A gaseous nitrogen supply is used to supply the energy. The equalized electrical signal is corrected by a circuit designed to compensate for the transducer nonlinearity, then fed into one channel of a phase linear power amplifier, then into the transducer. The amplifiers have been modified to increase their reliability. The acoustic energy in the room is monitored by six B and K 1/2-inch condenser microphones. The electrical signal from each microphone is fed into a six channel real time averager to give a spatial average of the signals.

Digital controller design: Continuous and discrete describing function analysis of the IPS system

The dynamic equations and the mathematical model of the continuous-data IPS control system are developed. The IPS model considered included one flexible body mode and was hardmounted to the Orbiter/Pallet. The model contains equations describing a torque feed-forward loop (using accelerometers as inputs) which will aid in reducing the pointing errors caused by Orbiter disturbances.

Digital control of high performance aircraft using adaptive estimation techniques

In this paper, an adaptive signal processing algorithm is joined with gain-scheduling for controlling the dynamics of high performance aircraft. A technique is presented for a reduced-order model (the longitudinal dynamics) of a high performance STOL aircraft. The actual controller views the nonlinear behavior of the aircraft as equivalent to a randomly switching sequence of linear models taken from a preliminary piecewise-linear fit of the system nonlinearities. The adaptive nature of the estimator is necessary to select the proper sequence of linear models along the flight trajectory. Nonlinear behavior is approximated by effective switching of the linear models at random times, with durations reflecting aircraft motion in response to pilot commands.

Digital controller design: Analysis of the annular suspension pointing system

The Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS) is a payload auxiliary pointing device of the Space Shuttle. The ASPS is comprised of two major subassemblies, a vernier and a coarse pointing subsystem. The experiment is attached to a mounting plate/rim combination which is suspended on magnetic bearing/actuators (MBA) strategically located about the rim. Fine pointing is achieved by gimballing the plate/rim within the MBA gaps. Control about the experiment line-of-sight is obtained through the use of a non-contacting rim drive and positioning torquer. All sensors used to close the servo loops on the vernier system are noncontacting elements. Therefore, the experiment is a free-flyer constrained only by the magnetic forces generated by the control loops.

The digital control of an experiment to size particles using a laser

Efforts to automate an experiment for sizing particles using a laser is described. The objective of the experiment was to rotate a photomultiplier detector at various angles and to record data associated with how light interacted with a particle. The light source was a laser which was fixed in space. The design consisted of a step motor with a fabricated electromechanical system to rotate the photomultiplier. The use of an 8080 microprocessor based microcomputer to control the step motor and to log data is described.

Digitally controlled sonars

Sonars are usually designed and constructed as stand alone instruments. That is, all elements or subsystems of the sonar are provided: power conditioning, displays, intercommunications, control, receiver, transmitter, and transducer. The sonars which are a part of the Advanced Ocean Test Development Platform (AOTDP) represent a departure from this manner of implementation and are configured more like an instrumentation system. Only the transducer, transmitter, and receiver which are unique to a particular sonar function; Up, Down, Side Scan, exist as separable subsystems. The remaining functions are reserved to the AOTDP and serve all sonars and other instrumentation in a shared manner. The organization and functions of the common AOTDP elements were described and then the interface with the sonars discussed. The techniques for software control of the sonar parameters were explained followed by the details of the realization of the sonar functions and some discussion of the performance of the side scan sonars.

SSME digital control design characteristics

To protect against a latent programming error (software fault) existing in an untried branch combination that would render the space shuttle out of control in a critical flight phase, the Backup Flight System (BFS) was chartered to provide a safety alternative. The BFS is designed to operate in critical flight phases (ascent and descent) by monitoring the activities of the space shuttle flight subsystems that are under control of the primary flight software (PFS) (e.g., navigation, crew interface, propulsion), then, upon manual command by the flightcrew, to assume control of the space shuttle and deliver it to a noncritical flight condition (safe orbit or touchdown). The problems associated with the selection of the PFS/BFS system architecture, the internal BFS architecture, the fault tolerant software mechanisms, and the long term BFS utility are discussed.

The design of multirate digital control systems

The successive loop closures synthesis method is the only method for multirate (MR) synthesis in common use. A new method for MR synthesis is introduced which requires a gradient-search solution to a constrained optimization problem. Some advantages of this method are that the control laws for all control loops are synthesized simultaneously, taking full advantage of all cross-coupling effects, and that simple, low-order compensator structures are easily accomodated. The algorithm and associated computer program for solving the constrained optimization problem are described. The successive loop closures , optimal control, and constrained optimization synthesis methods are applied to two example design problems. A series of compensator pairs are synthesized for each example problem. The succesive loop closure, optimal control, and constrained optimization synthesis methods are compared, in the context of the two design problems.

Further developments in modeling digital control systems with MA-prefiltered measurements

State variable representations are presented for a continuous-time plant driven by a zero-order-hold with multirate-sampled measurements prefiltered by multi-input/multi-output moving average (MA) processes. These representations have broad application, but are known to be useful in the aerospace field for modeling systems with star trackers and some state-of-the-art rate-gyroscopes and accelerometers.
