Tropospheric range error parameters: Further studies

Improved parameters are presented for predicting the tropospheric effect on electromagnetic range measurements from surface meteorological data. Parameters are given for computing the dry component of the zenith radio range effect from surface pressure alone with an rms error of 1 to 2 mm, or the total range effect from the dry and wet components of the surface refractivity, N, and a two-part quartic profile model. The parameters were obtained from meteorological balloon data with improved procedures, including the conversion of the geopotential heights of the balloon data to actual or geometric heights before using the data. The revised values of the parameter k show more latitude variation than is accounted for by the variation of g. This excess variation of k indicates a small latitude variation in the mean molecular weight of air and yields information about the latitude-varying water vapor content of air.

Tropospheric range error parameters: Further studies

Improved parameters are presented for predicting the tropospheric effect on electromagnetic range measurements from surface meteorological data. More geographic locations have been added to the earlier list. Parameters are given for computing the dry component of the zenith radio range effect from surface pressure alone with an rms error of 1 to 2 mm, or the total range effect from the dry and wet components of the surface refractivity and a two-part quartic profile model. The new parameters are obtained, as before, from meteorological balloon data but with improved procedures, including the conversion of the geopotential heights of the balloon data to actual or geometric heights before using the data. The revised values of the parameter k (dry component of vertical radio range effect per unit pressure at the surface) show more latitude variation than is accounted for by the variation of g, the acceleration of gravity.

Surface electrical properties experiment study phase, volume 2

The choice of an antenna for a subsurface radio sounding experiment is discussed. The radiation properties of the antennas as placed on the surface of the medium is examined. The objective of the lunar surface electrical properties experiment is described. A numerical analysis of the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability of a subsurface domain is developed. The application of electromagnetic field measurements between one or more transmitting antennas and a roving receiving station is explained.

East-west ionospheric drifts at the magnetic equator.

A technique has been developed to measure the electromagnetic east-west drift velocity of the F region ionosphere by means of the Jicamarca incoherent scatter radar. Results show a fairly consistent behavior from day to day even during a magnetically disturbed day. Velocities are westward with a maximum of the order of 50 m/sec during the day, and eastward with a maximum of the order of 135 m/sec during the night. They are shown as experimental evidence for the superrotation of the neutral atmosphere at equatorial latitudes, but with a velocity smaller than the values inferred from satellite drag.

E.l.f./v.l.f. emissions observed on Ariel 4

The Ariel 4 satellite was designed to study wave-particle phenomena in the magnetosphere by measuring the electromagnetic wave fields over a wide frequency range and the fluxes and pitch angle distributions of energetic particles. We describe here the results of a preliminary study of the various v.l.f./e.l.f. electromagnetic wave phenomena which are observed. These include man-made signals from v.l.f. transmitters, impulsive noise originating in thunderstorms and emissions arising from magnetospheric energetic charged particles.

Modular bus and payload designs for the Shuttle era

The Space Shuttle, in combination with the Interim Upper Stage, will provide an economical means of placing payloads in geostationary orbit in the 1980s. This paper summarizes a recent study of multidiscipline applications payloads for Shuttle-IUS launch. Various concepts for modular 'bus' spacecraft structures and payload groupings based on equipment commonality are considered. Several bus and payload configurations, ranging from 160 to 1600 kg, are developed. A typical payload is described in some detail. The payload consists of equipment at 400 MHz for search and rescue and data collection, at 1.5 and 15 GHz for aeronautical, maritime, and land mobile communications, at 40 and 90 GHz for millimeter wave communications, and at other bands for meteorological radiometry, electromagnetic environment measurements, and interferometry.

Lunar interaction with the solar wind - Effects on lunar electrical conductivity estimates

The lunar electromagnetic response, measured at very low frequencies with the moon in the solar wind, is used to evaluate interior electrical conductivity at great depth and to determine limits on the size of possible lunar core. A theory is developed wherein compression of the magnetic field in the lunar tail cavity caused by inflowing plasma at the lunar limbs and in the lunar wake, bends the magnetic field in the lunar interior and thereby alters the tangential component of magnetic field observed on the dayside surface. This theory strongly indicates that cavity fringing cannot explain the enhanced East-West fluctuations. It is proposed that the East-West fluctuations might be due to diamagnetic currents caused by lunar surface photoelectrons in the lunar terminator region.

Measuring spectra of arid lands

The principles, instrumentation and data acquisition and interpretation techniques employed in multispectral remote sensing for geological applications are surveyed. Sensing is based on exact measurements of electromagnetic radiation interacting with atoms and molecules in the sensed scene. Absorbed radiation can be used to identify elements in the near-IR bands and emitted or reflected energy can be sensed in the mid- and far-IR. Sunlight normally serves as the exciting source. Wavelength absorptance and emittance characteristics are distinct for the various elements and molecules such as transition metal ions, water, carbonates, etc. The bands for identifying different materials are determined in the laboratory, followed by ground truth field tests. Several hand-held radiometers and spectrometers have been developed for the field trials. Each instrument usually has a limited detection range and serves for developing a data base for subtle distinctions among contiguous minerals with similar radiometric signatures. The data serve for calibrating first airborne and then satellite sensors, e.g., the Landsat MSS and Thematic Mapper. Instruments are also being tested using the Orbiter as the test platform.

Rapid fitting of particle cascade development data from X-ray film densitometry measurements

A semiautomatic method of fitting transition curves to X-ray film optical density measurements of electromagnetic particle cascades is described. Several hundred singly and multiple interacting cosmic ray events from the JACEE 8 balloon flights were analyzed using this procedure. In addition to greatly increased speed compared to the previous manual method, the semiautomatic method offers increased accuracy through maximum likelihood fitting.

Scattering from coated structures and antenna pattern control using impedance surfaces, part A/B

The scattering from coated, conducting structures, specifically the coated dihedral corner reflector configuration and the coated strip/plate configuration is examined. The formulation uses impedance-wedge Uniform Theory of Diffraction scattering coefficients to calculate the diffracted fields. A finite-thickness coating is approximated using the impedance boundary condition to arrive at an equivalent impedance for the coating. The formulation of the impedance wedge coefficients is outlined. Far-field, perfectly conducting approximations are discussed. Problems with the present dihedral corner reflector model for certain angles of incidence and observation are discussed along with a potentially rectifying modification. Also, the capacity to measure the electromagnetic properties of lossy materials was developed. The effects of using multiple material coatings on the radiation pattern of the horn antenna were studied. Numerous computations were devoted toward the inverse problem of synthesizing desired radiation patterns using the impedance surfaces. Stabilizing the equivalent sheet impedance using the linear control condition was attempted, and it was found to be a very difficult task.
