Cooling plate assembly for plasma windows positioned in a beam accelerator system

A beam accelerator system operable to produce a medical isotope, including an ion accelerator that generates an ion beam; a low-pressure chamber; an anode adjacent and fluidly connected to the low-pressure chamber; a plasma window adjacent and fluidly connected to the anode; and a cathode housing adjacent and fluidly connected to the plasma window. The plasma window has a plurality of plates, each plate having an aperture that is aligned with an aperture in one or more adjacent plates to form a plasma channel. One or more plates in the plurality of plates includes a unitary plate having an aperture therein, and one or more cooling channels entering the unitary plate at a first side of the unitary plate and exiting the unitary plate at a second side of the unitary plate. The one or more cooling channels run through a thickness of the unitary plate.

Operational Guidelines for Use of Radiation Portal Monitors in Nuclear Facilities

This article provides guidelines (not requirements) for the testing, operation, and maintenance of radiation portal monitors used to scan pedestrian and vehicular traffic entering or exiting nuclear facilities to prevent unauthorized removal of nuclear material. The intended audience is facility managers, supervisors, and operators who are responsible for establishing and maintaining radiation detection systems, who are likely well acquainted with physical security procedures, but may not have a familiarity with the operation of radiation detection.

Direct Study of Changes in Catalyst Structure-Kinetic Properties During Redox Transitions

The Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) pulse response methodology is a transient technique that provides the time resolution needed to deconvolve reaction steps from the complex networks typical in industrial catalytic processes. Traditionally, TAP measurements observe gas phase dynamics at the reactor exit but lack direct measurements of changes in the catalyst itself. Recently, a new operando technique was developed that couples gas phase transients to dynamic changes in metal centers with the precise TAP methodology for nanomole titration. Using an industrial CrOx/Al2O3 catalyst used for propane dehydrogenation, we demonstrate the capabilities of this unique device to reveal key catalytic processes: 1) total propane oxidation not associated with chromia centers, 2) reduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+ correlated with selective product formation, and 3) subsequent carbon accumulation. By utilizing incremental pulsing in a diffusion-only transport regime, the spectrokinetic device allows us to resolve detailed changes in catalyst structure, composition, and kinetic function that are otherwise indistinguishable in conventional operando devices. The unification of the TAP methodology with time-resolved spectroscopic measurements offers new and unique insights into the complex kinetic phenomena regulated by solid catalyst surfaces.

Thermal-Hydraulic Performance of a Zeotropic Refrigerant in a Brazed Plate Evaporator

In this work we report the results of a preliminary investigation focused on evaluating the thermal-hydraulic performance of R455A (CO2, R32, R1234yf – 3/21.5/75.5) in a commercial brazed plate heat exchanger. Three key parameters were measured which were refrigerant flow maldistribution, overall refrigerant side heat transfer coefficient, and total refrigerant side pressure drop. These same parameters were also measured for R134a which served as a base-line refrigerant for comparison. The experimental test matrix was set up to investigate the influence of refrigerant mass flux (3 ≤ Gref ≤ 5 kg m-2 s-1), refrigerant inlet vapor quality (0.1 ≤ xin ≤ 0.4), and refrigerant exit superheat (5 ≤ Tsh ≤ 10 K) on the above mentioned thermal-hydraulic parameters. For these experimental conditions, on average, the overall refrigerant side heat transfer coefficients for R455A were 45.2% lower than those of R134a. Refrigerant flow maldistribution for R455A, on average, was observed to be 62.6 % higher than that measured for R134a, and the total pressure drop across the heat exchanger (minor and frictional losses) for R455A was on average 26.5% higher than that measured for R134a. These initial results set the stage for a comprehensive investigation focused on further investigating the thermal-hydraulic performance of zeotropic refrigerants in brazed plate heat exchangers.

Two-electron interference in two-photon attosecond double ionization of neon

The pump-probe experiments enabled by x-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) will allow us to directly observe correlated electronic motion with attosecond time resolution by detecting photoelectron pairs in coincidence. In helium, the transition between the nonsequential and sequential regime in two-photon double ionization (TPDI) is well explained by a virtual-sequential model. Much less is known, however, about the TPDI process in more complex atoms. Recently, we extended the virtual-sequential model to arbitrary light pulses [Chattopadhyay Phys. Rev. A 108, 013114 (2023)]. This extension employs multichannel scattering states for the single ionization of both the neutral and the ionized target, which we initially applied to helium. In the present study, we show that our extended virtual-sequential model reproduces the qualitative features of the angularly integrated observables with available experimental results for neon, a considerably more complex target. We observe an intriguing feature of inverted two-particle interference in the joint-energy distribution of Ne compared to He. Finally, this phenomenon, attributable to the presence of a final doubly ionized state with triplet symmetry coupled to the two photoelectrons, should be observable with current experimental technologies.
