Mild-Annealed Molecular Layer Deposition (MLD) Tincone Thin Film as Photoelectrochemically Stable and Efficient Electron Transport Layer for Si Photocathodes

Metalcone thin films, composed of inorganic–organic hybrids, are synthesized using molecular layer deposition (MLD) through reactions between organometallic precursors (e.g., Sn, Al, and Ti) and organic reactants (e.g., ethylene glycol and glycerol). Despite their unique properties, metalcones exhibit significant vulnerability to water due to their organic components, limiting their potential in electrochemical applications. This study focuses on enhancing the photoelectrochemical stability of tincone thin films in aqueous electrolyte while preserving their hybrid characteristics through mild annealing in air at 250 °C. As-deposited and vacuum-annealed tincone thin films exhibited significant degradation under these conditions, while high-temperature-annealed (500 °C) tincone thin films offered improved stability with a significant decline in charge transfer efficiency. In contrast, mild annealing in air maintained the C–O bond at half level and improved the stability and charge transport without compromising the unique characteristics of tincone. This was confirmed by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Mild-annealed tincone deposited on a lightly doped p-type silicon (p-Si) photocathode produced a 20-fold increase in CO volume compared to high-temperature annealed tincone in a CO 2 -saturated potassium bicarbonate (KHCO 3 ) electrolyte with dispersed graphene oxide–cobalt phthalocyanine (GO-CoPc) under 1 sun illumination at 0.9 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), while maintaining the faradaic efficiency for CO and H 2 . These results suggest that mild-annealed tincone thin films hold significant potential as protective charge transport layers on silicon photocathodes for the aqueous CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR).

Disentangling Electronic Transport and Hysteresis at Individual Grain Boundaries in Hybrid Perovskites via Automated Scanning Probe Microscopy

Underlying the rapidly increasing photovoltaic efficiency and stability of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) is the advancement in the understanding of the microstructure of polycrystalline MHP thin film. Over the past decade, intense efforts have been aimed at understanding the effect of microstructures on MHP properties, including chemical heterogeneity, strain disorder, phase impurity, etc. It has been found that grain and grain boundary (GB) are tightly related to lots of microscale and nanoscale behavior in MHP thin films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is widely used to observe grain and boundary structures in topography and subsequently to study the correlative surface potential and conductivity of these structures. For now, most AFM measurements have been performed in imaging mode to study the static behavior; in contrast, AFM spectroscopy mode allows us to investigate the dynamic behavior of materials, e.g., conductivity under sweeping voltage. However, a major limitation of AFM spectroscopy measurements is that they require manual operation by human operators, and as such only limited data can be obtained, hindering systematic investigations of these microstructures. Here, we designed a workflow combining the conductive AFM measurement with a machine learning (ML) algorithm to systematically investigate grain boundaries in MHPs. The trained ML model can extract GBs locations from the topography image, and the workflow drives the AFM probe to each GB location to perform a current–voltage (IV) curve automatically. Then, we are able to have IV curves at all GB locations, allowing us to systematically understand the property of GBs. Using this method, we discovered that the GB junction points are less conductive, potentially more photoactive, and can play critical roles in MHP stability, while most previous works only focused on the difference between GB and grains.

The accuracy of multi-group models for nonlocal electron transport in magnetized plasmas

In the extreme conditions of inertial confinement fusion experiments, heat flow plays a vital role, but local diffusive models frequently break down and overestimate the heat flow. The situation becomes more complicated again in the significant magnetic fields generated during laser–plasma interactions or in magnetized fusion schemes. Accurate non-local and magnetized heat flow computations can be carried out using Vlasov–Fokker–Planck (VFP) simulations, but these are computationally expensive. There is, therefore, significant interest in using faster multi-group models to accurately calculate the non-local heat flow in magnetized plasmas. We benchmark two such multi-group models for calculating the heat flow, M1 and hybrid-AWBS-BGK, against diffusive models and full VFP simulations, before applying the models to realistic example test cases, both magnetized and unmagnetized. We find that the multi-group models generally perform very well for moderate non-localities up to kλmfp∼0.01, but the computational cost increases dramatically. hybrid-AWBS-BGK performs more effectively than M1 at high non-localities, up to kλmfp∼1, due to its adaptive solver and robust P1 closure, but tends to fail in very strong magnetic fields. Both codes are much faster than VFP simulations but are still slow in steep temperature gradients.

Electronic transport properties of spin-crossover polymer plus polyaniline composites with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles

Abstract Adding Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles to composites of [Fe(Htrz) 2 (trz)](BF 4 ) spin-crossover polymer and polyaniline (PANI) drives a phase separation of both and restores the molecular structure and cooperative effects of the spin-crossover polymer without compromising the increased conductivity gained through the addition of PANI. We observe an increased on-off ratio for the DC conductivity owing to an enlarged off state resistivity and a 20 times larger AC conductivity of the on state compared with DC values. The Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, primarily confined to the [Fe(Htrz) 2 (trz)](BF 4 ) phase, are ferromagnetically coupled to the local moment of the spin-crossover molecule suggesting the existence of an exchange interaction between both components.

Electron transport through antiferromagnetic spin textures and skyrmions in a magnetic tunnel junction

An ideal layered $\hat{x}$-polarized antiferromagnet (AFM) between two antialigned $±\hat{z}$ polarized ferromagnetic (FM) contacts transmits no current due to a π phase difference of the matrix elements coupling the spin degenerate states to the two FM contacts. Inserting a normal-metal layer or tunnel barrier layer between one FM contact and the AFM alters this phase difference, and due to the unequal weighting of the two spins at the interface, it also breaks the spin degeneracy of the two AFM states. Further, the broken symmetry of the matrix elements combined with the broken degeneracy of the AFM states results in a Fano resonance in the transmission and a turn-on of the $T_{↑,↓}$ transmission channel. Such a magnetic tunnel junction geometry with two antialigned $±\hat{z}$ FM contacts can electrically detect an AFM skyrmion. The AFM skyrmion serves as an analog of the oblique polarizer in the triple-polarizer experiment. Resistances and resistance ratios are calculated and compared for FM and AFM skyrmions in a magnetic tunnel junction.

Electronic transport and thermoelectricity in the selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32

Here, we report a study of selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32 (x = 0, 1, 2) single crystals, which crystallize in a cubic structure with the F$d$$\overline{3}$$m$ space group, and show typical semiconducting behavior. The large discrepancy between the activation energy for electrical conductivity E ρ (32.3–69.8 meV), and for thermopower E S (3.2–11.5 meV), indicates a polaronic transport mechanism between 350 and 50 K. With decreasing temperature, it evolves into variable-range hopping conduction. Furthermore, the heat capacity shows a hump around 25(5) K and diverges from the Debye T 3 law at low temperatures, indicating the observation of structural glassy features in these crystalline solids.
