Immersive Analytics in Critical Spatial Domains: From Materials to Energy Systems

Immersive analytics (IA) leverages virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality to transform how users interact with complex datasets across domains such as science, industry, and education. These immersive technologies offer spatial and multimodal environments that foster intuitive exploration, but they also introduce challenges related to cognitive load, interface design, and system performance. Here, this article presents a comprehensive review of visualization techniques, interaction models, and multimodal inputs utilized in IA. Drawing on case studies in scientific visualization, industrial training, and educational communication, we examine both the potential and limitations of current systems. Finally, we propose future research directions, focusing on real‐time collaboration, adaptive user interfaces, and scalable data exploration strategies to advance the field.

PV_ICE: PV in the Circular Economy, Dynamic Energy and Materials Tool (PV ICE)

This open-source tool implements Circular Economy metrics for photovoltaic (PV) materials. It can be used to quantify and assign a value framework to efforts on re-design, reduction, replacement, reuse, recycling, and lifetime and reliability increases in the PV value chain. The PV_ICE is leveraging published data from different sources on PV manufacturing and predicted technological changes. Input data is being compiled here This tool will help implement circularity metrics, quantify and assign a value framework to efforts on re-design, reduction, replacement, reusage, recycling, and lifetime and reliability increases on PV.

Importance of suberin biopolymer in plant function, contributions to soil organic carbon and in the production of bio-derived energy and materials

Abstract Suberin is a hydrophobic biopolymer of significance in the production of biomass-derived materials and in biogeochemical cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we describe suberin structure and biosynthesis, and its importance in biological (i.e., plant bark and roots), ecological (soil organic carbon) and economic (biomass conversion to bioproducts) contexts. Furthermore, we highlight the genomics and analytical approaches currently available and explore opportunities for future technologies to study suberin in quantitative and/or high-throughput platforms in bioenergy crops. A greater understanding of suberin structure and production in lignocellulosic biomass can be leveraged to improve representation in life cycle analysis and techno-economic analysis models and enable performance improvements in plant biosystems as well as informed crop system management to achieve economic and environmental co-benefits.

Stable salt hydrate-based thermal energy storage materials

A phase change material composition for latent heat storage is provided. In one embodiment, the phase change material includes a salt hydrate having a melting temperature (Tm) of from 1° C. to 100° C. as determined in accordance with ASTM E793. The phase change material further includes a stabilizing matrix including a polysaccharide selected from the group of a nanocellulose, a sulfonated polysaccharide, a starch, a glycogen, a chitin, and combinations thereof. A composite article including the phase change material composition is also provided.

Hydrogen R&D at NREL

This presentation provides an overview of the hydrogen R&D activities at NREL, including make, store, move, and use hydrogen. At NREL, our research spans the advanced water splitting materials (AWSM) and hydrogen storage R&D, performed within the HydroGEN and HyMARC Energy Materials Networks (EMN), respectively, to the materials integration and scale up work done within the H2NEW consortium, to fuel cell R&D within the M2FCT consortium, to stack and systems testing at the MW-level. These R&D activities are funded by U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office.

HydroGEN Consortium: Advancements in Hydrogen Production

HydroGEN Energy Materials Network (EMN) is an U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) EERE Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO)-funded consortium that aims to accelerate the discovery and development of advanced water splitting materials (AWSM) for clean, low-cost hydrogen production. Materials innovations are key to enhancing performance, durability, and cost of hydrogen generation technologies. HydroGEN is focused on low technology readiness level AWS technologies, including low- (alkaline exchanged membrane electrolysis) and high-temperature electrolysis (proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis), photoelectrochecmical (PEC) and thermochemical (TCH) water splitting. The AWS technologies in this consortium study proton conduction in solid oxide electrolysis and hydroxide conduction in polymer electrolysis, and proton transport in photoelectrochemical water splitting. This presentation will provide an overview of the HydroGEN EMN and technical highlights of a few lab-led and DOE-awarded "seedling" R&D projects. HydroGEN continues to grow its community of industry, university, and national laboratories, forming a national innovation ecosystem focused on renewable hydrogen production.

Circular Economy Modeling and Analysis

NREL is working to transform the "linear economy" - where materials are simply used and disposed - into a circular one. The linear economy is not only unsustainable and inefficienct, but will ultimately bring us face-to-face with resource limitations. NREL is dedicated to developing a circular economy for energy materials, with recycling, repairing, and reusing in mind. This factsheet describes NREL's core competencies and capabilities, and opportunities for partnership.
