Interaction with and production of sound by vortex flows

A description is presented of an improved version of a comprehensive theory of aeroacoustics which, in its original form, had first been reported by Yates and Sandri (1976). The new theory departs in several basic aspects from the concepts provided by Lighthill (1952), Ribner (1964), and Lilley et al. (1974). A detailed derivation of the theory is given for the case of constant entropy flows, taking into account the production of sound by a 'primary' fluid flow, the processing of sound by a flow, and the effects of sound on a primary flow. An investigation is conducted regarding the processing and the production of sound by vortex flow. Questions related to the excitation of a fluid flow by sound are also considered.

Pulsed Light Synthesis of High Entropy Nanocatalysts with Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Prolonged Stability for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The ability to synthesize compositionally complex nanostructures rapidly is a key to high-throughput functional materials discovery. In addition to being time-consuming, a majority of conventional materials synthesis processes closely follow thermodynamics equilibria, which limit the discovery of new classes of metastable phases such as high entropy oxides (HEO). Herein, a photonic flash synthesis of HEO nanoparticles at timescales of milliseconds is demonstrated. By leveraging the abrupt heating and cooling cycles induced by a high-power-density xenon pulsed light, mixed transition metal salt precursors undergo rapid chemical transformations. Hence, nanoparticles form within milliseconds with a strong affinity to bind to the carbon substrate. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity measurements of the synthesized nanoparticles demonstrate two orders of magnitude prolonged stability at high current densities, without noticeable decay in performance, compared to commercial IrO 2 catalyst. This superior catalytic activity originates from the synergistic effect of different alloying elements mixed at a high entropic state. It is found that Cr addition influences surface activity the most by promoting higher oxidation states, favoring optimal interaction with OER intermediates. The proposed high-throughput method opens new pathways toward developing next-generation functional materials for various electronics, sensing, and environmental applications, in addition to renewable energy conversion.

Revealing a Hidden Intermediate of Rotatory Catalysis with X-ray Crystallography and Molecular Simulations

The mechanism of rotatory catalysis in ATPhydrolyzing molecular motors remains an unresolved puzzle in biological energy transfer. Notwithstanding the wealth of available biochemical and structural information inferred from years of experiments, knowledge on how the coupling between the chemical and mechanical steps within motors enforces directional rotatory movements remains fragmentary. Even more contentious is to pinpoint the rate-limiting step of a multistep rotation process. Here, using vacuolar or V 1 -type hexameric ATPase as an exemplary rotational motor, we present a model of the complete 4-step conformational cycle involved in rotatory catalysis. First, using Xray crystallography, a new intermediate or “dwell” is identified, which enables the release of an inorganic phosphate (or P i ) after ATP hydrolysis. Using molecular dynamics simulations, this new dwell is placed in a sequence with three other crystal structures to derive a putative cyclic rotation path. Free-energy simulations are employed to estimate the rate of the hexameric protein transformations and delineate allosteric effects that allow new reactant ATP entry only after hydrolysis product exit. An analysis of transfer entropy brings to light how the side-chain-level interactions transcend into larger-scale reorganizations, highlighting the role of the ubiquitous arginine-finger residues in coupling chemical and mechanical information. An inspection of all known rates encompassing the 4-step rotation mechanism implicates the overcoming of the ADP interactions with V 1 -ATPase to be the rate-limiting step of motor action.

Turbulence alteration due to shock motion

Physical and computational models are provided for three cases of shock motion-turbulence interaction: (1) the production of velocity fluctuations due to shock oscillations; (2) eddy alteration due to transient eddy shocklets; and (3) eddy production due to transient shock-entropy spottiness interactions. Shock motions are shown to be efficient in converting mean flow energy into fluctuation energy, and high-frequency induced shock motions produce intense vorticity fields from the incident mean flow. The effects of transient eddy shocklets created by subsonic eddy motion in a supersonic stream are discussed in detail.

Quasar Identification Using Multivariate Probability Density Estimated from Nonparametric Conditional Probabilities

Nonparametric estimation for a probability density function that describes multivariate data has typically been addressed by kernel density estimation (KDE). A novel density estimator recently developed by Farmer and Jacobs offers an alternative high-throughput automated approach to univariate nonparametric density estimation based on maximum entropy and order statistics, improving accuracy over univariate KDE. This article presents an extension of the single variable case to multiple variables. The univariate estimator is used to recursively calculate a product array of one-dimensional conditional probabilities. In combination with interpolation methods, a complete joint probability density estimate is generated for multiple variables. Good accuracy and speed performance in synthetic data are demonstrated by a numerical study using known distributions over a range of sample sizes from 100 to 10 6 for two to six variables. Performance in terms of speed and accuracy is compared to KDE. The multivariate density estimate developed here tends to perform better as the number of samples and/or variables increases. As an example application, measurements are analyzed over five filters of photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 17. The multivariate estimation is used to form the basis for a binary classifier that distinguishes quasars from galaxies and stars with up to 94% accuracy.

The cosmological moduli problem and naturalness

Nowadays, the cosmological moduli problem (CMP) comes in three parts: 1. potential violation of Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints from late decaying moduli fields, 2. the moduli-induced gravitino problem wherein gravitinos are overproduced and their decays violate BBN or dark matter overproduction bounds and 3. the moduli-induced lightest SUSY particle (LSP) overproduction problem. Also, the CMP may be regarded as either a problem or else a solution to scenarios with dark matter over- or under-production. We examine the cosmological moduli problem and its connection to electroweak naturalness. We calculate the various two-body decay widths of a light modulus field into MSSM particles and gravitinos within general supersymmetric models. We include both phase space and mixing effects. We examine cases without and with helicity suppression of modulus decays to gravitinos (cases 1 & 2) and/or gauginos (cases A & B). For case B1, we evaluate regions of gravitino mass m 3/2 vs. modulus mass mΦ parameter space constrained by BBN, by overproduction of gravitinos and by overproduction of neutralino dark matter, along with connections to naturalness. For this case, essentially all of parameter space is excluded unless mΦ ≳ 2.5 × 10 3 TeV with mΦ< 2m 3/2 For a potentially most propitious case B2 with Φ decay to Higgs and matter turned off, then modulus branching fractions to SUSY and to gravitinos become highly suppressed at large m Φ . But since the modulus number density increases faster than the branching fractions decrease, there is still gross overproduction of neutralino dark matter. We also show that in this scenario the thermally produced gravitino problem is fixed by huge entropy dilution, but non-thermal gravitino production from moduli decay remains a huge problem unless it is kinematically suppressed with m Φ < 2m 3/2 . In a pedagogical appendix, we present detailed calculations of modulus field two-body decay widths.

Feasibility Evaluation of a Solid Phase Scalable HEA Cladding Manufacturing Route

First of a kind development result on two low-energy solid-phase processes applied on an irradiation-resistant alloy, NiCoFeCrCu 0.12 , are achieved and demonstrate moderate feasibility of successful tube fabrication using shear assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE™) and friction stir layer deposition as a bulk manufacturing process. The scope of the work is performed in four phases: 1) direct tube manufacturing of the irradiation-resistant high-entropy alloy (HEA) composite with increased strength, 2) co-shear lining manufacturing process for the increased strength and corrosion-resistant, irradiation-tolerant HEAs, 3) ShAPE of the radially gradient corrosion resistance alloy, and 4) alloy development and fabrication enabled through friction stir additive manufacturing processes among others. This report describes the development activities from April to December 2023 to manufacture a direct customizable thin-walled tubular product from irradiation-tolerant composite high-entropy alloys (C-HEAs) while the overall project is continuing in 2024.

QCD evolution of entanglement entropy

Entanglement entropy has emerged as a novel tool for probing nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phenomena, such as color confinement in protons. While recent studies have demonstrated its significant capability in describing hadron production in deep inelastic scatterings, the QCD evolution of entanglement entropy remains unexplored. Here, in this work, we investigate the differential rapidity-dependent entanglement entropy within the proton and its connection to final-state hadrons, aiming to elucidate its QCD evolution. Our analysis reveals a strong agreement between the rapidity dependence of von Neumann entropy, obtained from QCD evolution equations, and the corresponding experimental data on hadron entropy. These findings provide compelling evidence for the emergence of a maximally entangled state, offering new insights into the nonperturbative structure of protons.

Particle Creation from Entanglement Entropy

We investigate how entanglement entropy can drive particle creation, deriving explicit relations between entropy and the radiated particle spectrum, the total number of particles, and the total energy. Particle production is computed for scenarios that include accelerated motion, black hole evaporation, and beta decay, validating against known results while also extending them. We focus primarily on the low-entropy limit (analogous to nonrelativistic motion), but also examine cases of significant particle production arising from harmonic cycles. The results establish an explicit operational link between information flow and matter creation, providing a concrete demonstration of “it from bit”.

Entanglement as a Probe of Hadronization

Recently, it was discovered that the proton structure at high energies exhibits maximal entanglement. This leads to a simple relation between the proton’s parton distributions and the entropy of hadrons produced in high-energy inelastic interactions, which has been experimentally confirmed. In this Letter, we extend this approach to the production of jets. Here, the maximal entanglement predicts a relation between the jet fragmentation function and the entropy of hadrons produced in jet fragmentation. We test this relation using the ATLAS Collaboration data on jet production at the Large Hadron Collider, and find a good agreement between the prediction based on maximal entanglement within the jet and the data. This study represents the first use of a quantum entanglement framework in an experimental study of the hadronization process, offering a new perspective on the transition from perturbative to nonperturbative QCD. Our results open the door to a more comprehensive understanding of the quantum nature of hadronization.

Information Theoretic Evaluation of Satellite Soil Moisture Retrievals

Microwave radiometry has a long legacy of providing estimates of remotely sensed near surfacesoil moisture measurements over continental and global scales. A consistent assessment of theerrors and uncertainties associated with these retrievals is important for their effective utilization in modeling, data assimilation and end-use application environments. This article presents an evaluationof soil moisture retrieval products from AMSR-E, ASCAT, SMOS, AMSR2 and SMAPinstruments using information theory-based metrics. These metrics rely on time series analysis ofsoil moisture retrievals for estimating the measurement error, level of randomness (entropy) andregularity (complexity) of the data. The results of the study indicate that the measurement errors inthe remote sensing retrievals are significantly larger than that of the ground soil moisture measurements. The SMAP retrievals, on the other hand, were found to have reduced errors (comparable to Preprint submitted to Remote Sensing of Environment October 1, 2017those of in-situ datasets), particularly over areas with moderate vegetation. The SMAP retrievals also demonstrate high information content relative to other retrieval products, with higher levelsof complexity and reduced entropy. Finally, a joint evaluation of the entropy and complexity ofremotely sensed soil moisture products indicates that the information content of the AMSR-E, ASCAT,SMOS and AMSR2 retrievals is low, whereas SMAP retrievals show better performance. The use of information theoretic assessments is effective in quantifying the required levels of improvements needed in the remote sensing soil moisture retrievals to enhance their utility and information content.

Entropy variations and light ray operators from replica defects

We study the defect operator product expansion (OPE) of displacement operators in free and interacting conformal field theories using replica methods. We show that as n approaches 1 a contact term can emerge when the OPE contains defect operators of twist d - 2. For interacting theories and general states we give evidence that the only possibility is from the defect operator that becomes the stress tensor in the n → 1 limit. This implies that the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) is always saturated for CFTs with a twist gap. As a check, we show independently that in a large class of near vacuum states, the second variation of the entanglement entropy is given by a simple correlation function of averaged null energy operators as studied by Hofman and Maldacena. This suggests that sub-leading terms in the defect OPE are controlled by a defect version of the spin-3 non-local light ray operator and we speculate about the possible origin of such a defect operator. For free theories this contribution condenses to a contact term that leads to violations of QNEC saturation.

Entropy Stable Staggered Grid Spectral Collocation for the Burgers' and Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

Staggered grid, entropy stable discontinuous spectral collocation operators of any order are developed for Burgers' and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured hexahedral elements. This generalization of previous entropy stable spectral collocation work [1, 2], extends the applicable set of points from tensor product, Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) to a combination of tensor product Legendre-Gauss (LG) and LGL points. The new semi-discrete operators discretely conserve mass, momentum, energy and satisfy a mathematical entropy inequality for both Burgers' and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in three spatial dimensions. They are valid for smooth as well as discontinuous flows. The staggered LG and conventional LGL point formulations are compared on several challenging test problems. The staggered LG operators are significantly more accurate, although more costly to implement. The LG and LGL operators exhibit similar robustness, as is demonstrated using test problems known to be problematic for operators that lack a nonlinearly stability proof for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (e.g., discontinuous Galerkin, spectral difference, or flux reconstruction operators).

Toward Efficient Entropic Recycling by Mastering Ring–Chain Kinetics

Traditional chemical recycling approaches for condensation polymers suffer compounding energy losses and CO 2 emissions across multiple polymerization and depolymerization cycles. Entropic recycling can address these energy losses by entrapping free energy within the deconstruction products. Entropic recycling involves depolymerization to macrocyclic monomers, but such processes have not been feasible due to the high dilutions typically required to generate macrocyclic compounds. Here, we leverage selective catalysis to allow entropic recycling at concentrations 20–2000× higher than typical for macrocyclization reactions. We find that Ru-based olefin metathesis catalysts containing bulky iodine ligands significantly bias the ring–chain kinetic product distribution during ring-closing metathesis (RCM) toward the formation of oligomeric cycloalkenes. Further improvements in reaction concentration and macrocycle yield are obtained by using high catalyst loadings and by predisposing the alkene substrates to undergo favorable macrocyclization. These RCM optimizations translate effectively to cyclodepolymerization (CDP) of an olefin-containing polymer, with RCM and CDP affording similar macrocycle product distributions under identical reaction conditions. Macrocycle polymerization by entropy-driven ring-opening metathesis provides much higher molecular weight polymers than condensation polymerization of linear analogues, reducing the time to achieve high molecular weight from hours to minutes and enabling polymerization at room temperature. Finally, our findings re-emphasize the importance of energy consumption during a polymer’s lifecycle and provide a framework for the design of efficient entropic recycling systems.

Ulysses near-ecliptic observations of differential flow between protons and alphas in the solar wind

The evolution of differential streaming between protons and alpha particles in the solar wind was observed with the solar wind plasma experiment on the Ulysses spacecraft over the solar range of 1.15 to 5.40 AU between November 18, 1990, and May 5, 1992. The correlation of the difference in ion speeds, Delta V = the absolute value of V(sub alpha) - the absolute value of V(sub p), with the proton speed V(sub p) observed by other spacecraft at solar distances less than or equal to 1 AU disappeared at approximately 2 AU. At solar distances greater than or equal to 2.85 AU, the largest values of both V(sub alpha p) = the absolute value of V(sub alpha p) = the absolute value of V(sub alpha) - V(sub p) and the absolute value of Delta V were found in the interaction regions on the leading edges of high-speed streams. The differential streaming was typically enhanced just downstream of strong forward and reverse shocks, and large negative values of Delta V were frequently encountered in the interaction regions. A correlation between V(sub alpha p) and the ratio tau(sub zero)/tau(sub e) of Coulomb collision time to expansion time was observed at all distances, but it is suggested that at the larger values of tau(sub zero)/tau(sub e) observed correlation may arise from enhanced production of differential streaming by processes that also increase the entropy of the solar wind protons.

Preparation and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of TiO 2 /(AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 Nanocomposites

Photocatalytic water splitting is a promising strategy for addressing the global energy crisis and environmental pollution. In this study, spinel-type high-entropy oxide (HEO) nanoparticles, (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 , were successfully synthesized via a solution combustion method. TiO 2 /(AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 nanocomposites with varying molar ratios were subsequently fabricated through solid-state sintering, and their photocatalytic water-splitting performance was systematically investigated. The hydrogen production rate initially increased and then decreased with increasing TiO 2 content. The optimal nanocomposite achieved a hydrogen evolution rate of 1450 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 2.2 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 nanoparticles. In addition, the TiO 2 /(AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 nanocomposites exhibited significantly improved photocorrosion resistance compared with TiO 2 nanoparticles. After 12 h irradiation under a 500-W high-pressure mercury lamp, the hydrogen production rates of the nanocomposites and pure TiO 2 retained 79.3% and 5.47% of their initial values, respectively. These results demonstrate the important role of (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 and other HEOs in enhancing the photocatalytic performance of nanoheterojunction catalysts. Lastly, this work broadens the potential applications of (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 and related HEO materials in the field of photocatalysis.

Large N algebras and generalized entropy

We construct a Type II ∞ von Neumann algebra that describes the large N physics of single-trace operators in AdS/CFT in the microcanonical ensemble, where there is no need to include perturbative 1/N corrections. Using only the extrapolate dictionary, we show that the entropy of semiclassical states on this algebra is holographically dual to the generalized entropy of the black hole bifurcation surface. From a boundary perspective, this constitutes a derivation of a special case of the QES prescription without any use of Euclidean gravity or replicas; from a purely bulk perspective, it is a derivation of the quantum-corrected Bekenstein-Hawking formula as the entropy of an explicit algebra in the G → 0 limit of Lorentzian effective field theory quantum gravity. In a limit where a black hole is first allowed to equilibrate and then is later potentially re-excited, we show that the generalized second law is a direct consequence of the monotonicity of the entropy of algebras under trace-preserving inclusions. Finally, by considering excitations that are separated by more than a scrambling time we construct a “free product” von Neumann algebra that describes the semiclassical physics of long wormholes supported by shocks. We compute Rényi entropies for this algebra and show that they are equal to a sum over saddles associated to quantum extremal surfaces in the wormhole. Surprisingly, however, the saddles associated to “bulge” quantum extremal surfaces contribute with a negative sign.

The algebraic structure of gravitational scrambling

We introduce a new algebraic framework to describe gravitational scrambling, including the semiclassical limit of any out-of-time-order correlation function that is built out of operator insertions separated by approximately the scrambling time. In two dimensions, the scrambling algebra, which we call a modular-twisted product, is defined in terms of two copies of the Leutheusser-Liu half-sided modular inclusion of von Neumann algebras; these describe early- and late-time operators respectively. In limits where the separation between insertions is taken to be either significantly greater or smaller than the scrambling time, the modular-twisted product reduces, respectively, to free- and tensor-product algebras that were previously studied in [arXiv:2209.10454]. In a sense, the modular-twisted product interpolates between these two products. Including the Hamiltonian in the scrambling algebra leads to a Type II$_\infty$ von Neumann algebra with finite renormalized entropies that interpolate between single-QES and multi-QES phases. We also describe how to generalize the modular-twisted product algebra to higher dimensions, including spatially localized boundary excitations.
