Simple method for forming thin-wall pressure vessels

Application of internal hydrostatic pressure to seam-welded circular cylindrical tanks having corner-welded, flat, circular ends forms large thin-walled high quality tanks. Form limits expansion of cylindrical portion of final tank while hemispherical ends develop freely; no external form or restraint is required to fabricate spherical tanks.

An exact closed form solution for constant area compressible flow with friction and heat transfer

The well-known differential equation for the one-dimensional flow of a compressible fluid with heat transfer and wall friction has no known solution in closed form for the general case. This report presents a closed form solution for the special case of constant heat flux per unit length and constant specific heat. The solution was obtained by choosing the square of a dimensionless flow parameter as one of the independent variables to describe the flow. From this exact solution, an approximate simplified form is derived that is applicable for predicting subsonic flow performance characteristics for many types of constant area passages in internal flow. The data included in this report are considered sufficiently accurate for use as a guide in analyzing and designing internal gas flow systems.

Observations of actively forming lava tubes and associated structures, Hawaii.

Fluid basalts were erupted in August, 1970, from a vent near Alae Crater and flowed southeast. Forming exclusively in pahoehoe basalt, tubes in general evolve from lava channels by crustal formation, although some tubes develop directly from the vent. The observation discussed shows that channel crusts and tube roofs form in several ways. Lava channels usually form along the axis of highest velocity within the flow and are often centered along older lava channels, stream beds, rifts, grabens, or fracture zones.

GaAs transistors formed by Be or Mg ion implantation

N-p-n transistor structures have been formed in GaAs by implanting n-type substrates with Be ions to form base regions and then implanting them with 20-keV Si ions to form emitters. P-type layers have been produced in GaAs by implantation of either Mg or Be ions, with substrate at room temperature, followed by annealing at higher temperatures.

Evaluation of forming and manufacturing characterisitics of boron/aluminum materials

Low cost techniques were evaluated for forming boron-reinforced aluminum structural shapes from diffusion-bonded flat sheet and plate. Successful forming was accomplished on fully consolidated material up to .46 cm (0.180) in thick. Five hot section 12 in long were formed from 0.100 thick flat plates 12 in long by 7 in wide. Three of the hat sections were tested in cyclic compression to demonstrate the performance capability of structures by this type of low-cost secondary fabrication. The structural efficiency of these hats was found to be equal or superior to similar structures fabricated by more costly techniques.

Process for making RF shielded cable connector assemblies and the products formed thereby

A process for making RF shielded cable connector assemblies and the resulting structures is described. The process basically consists of potting wires of a shielded cable between the cable shield and a connector housing to fill in, support, regidize, and insulate the individual wires contained in the cable. The formed potting is coated with an electrically conductive material so as to form an entirely encompassing adhering conductive path between the cable shield and the metallic connector housing. A protective jacket is thereby formed over the conductive coating between the cable shield and the connector housing.

On the use and computation of the Jordan canonical form in system theory

This paper investigates various aspects of the application of the Jordan canonical form of a matrix in system theory and develops a computational approach to determining the Jordan form for a given matrix. Applications include pole placement, controllability and observability studies, serving as an intermediate step in yielding other canonical forms, and theorem proving. The computational method developed in this paper is both simple and efficient. The method is based on the definition of a generalized eigenvector and a natural extension of Gauss elimination techniques. Examples are included for demonstration purposes.

Identification characteristics of certain lunar relief forms on pictures obtained from spacecraft

This investigation was restricted to the determination of recognitional characteristics of a single type of relief form, dimple craters on the surface of maria. These craters were arbitrarily considered as closed, negative relief forms, circular in plan-view, and symmetric relative to the center. Two techniques were used to determine the shadow configuration in the craters: (1) experimental determination of the shadow edge by illuminating the models of different profile shapes with a parallel light beam; and (2) geometric construction of the shadow edge using a vertical section of the formation in the direction of the solar rays. A morphological map of the surface which includes the following factors can be compiled using the proposed identification technique: crater profile nature, crater diameter, ratio of diameter and depth, sharpness of the lip, and distribution density of the forms.

Short forms of the Texas Social Behavior Inventory /TSBI/, an objective measure of self-esteem

Two short (16 item) forms of the Helmreich, Stapp, and Ervin (1974) Texas Social Behavior Inventory, a validated, objective measure of self-esteem or social competence are presented. Normative data and other statistics are described for males and females. Correlations between each short form and long (32-item) scale were .97. Factor analysis and part-whole correlations verified the similarity of the two forms. The utility of the scale in research is described.

The neutrino charge form-factor

Mathematical analysis and dispersion relations are used to obtain the general functional form of the neutrino charge form-factor. It is shown that if the scale for weak interactions is given by G, where G is the Fermi coupling constant, then for a large range of momentum transfer values, the form-factor may be approximated by a function that is linear in the square of the momentum transfer.

Solutions to divergence form equations using the method of partial implicitization

Partial implicitization is well suited for use on vector-processing computers since the method is an explicit unconditionally stable numerical technique. So far equations cast in nondivergence form have been used, though equations cast in the divergence form would have inherently greater accuracy. Since the method of partial implicitization is applicable only to relaxing problems to their steady state and is not applicable to true transient problems, a simple mathematical manipulation can be carried out which will produce the desired partial implicitization solution to divergence form equations.

Candidate interstellar molecules formed from ion-molecule reactions of NO

Molecular orbital calculations using the MINDO/3 method were performed on a series of small molecules to explore reactions of NO which could lead to formation of interstellar molecules. Specifically, equilibrium geometries, isomeric energies, heats of reactions, and reaction pathways were calculated for plausible ion-molecule reactions involving NO and NO(+). The results of these calculations suggest that HNO(+) and HON(+) could be present in observable abundance in interstellar clouds. These species can be formed by the reaction of NO with H3(+) but not by NO(+) with H2. Moreover, they are stable to dissociation and do not react with H2 to re-form NO or to form isomers of HNOH(+).

Space fabrication: Graphite composite truss welding and cap forming subsystems

An automated beam builder for the fabrication of space structures is described. The beam builder forms a triangular truss 1.3 meters on a side. Flat strips of preconsolidated graphite fiber fabric in a polysulfone matrix are coiled in a storage canister. Heaters raise the material to forming temperature then the structural cap section is formed by a series of rollers. After cooling, cross members and diagonal tension cords are ultrasonically welded in place to complete the truss. The stability of fabricated structures and composite materials is also examined.

Graphite composite truss welding and cap section forming subsystems. Volume 1: Executive summary

A rolltrusion process was developed for forming of a hybrid, single-ply woven graphite and glass fiber cloth, impregnated with a polysulfone resin and coated with TI02 pigmented P-1700 resin into strips for the on-orbit fabrication of triangular truss segments. Ultrasonic welding in vacuum showed no identifiable effects on weld strength or resin flow characteristics. An existing bench model cap roll forming machine was modified and used to roll form caps for the prototype test truss and for column test specimens in order to test local buckling and torsional instability characteristics.

Forming electrical interconnections through semiconductor wafers

An information processing system based on CMOS/SOS technology is being developed by NASA to process digital image data collected by satellites. An array of holes is laser drilled in a semiconductor wafer, and a conductor is formed in the holes to fabricate electrical interconnections through the wafers. Six techniques are used to form conductors in the silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) wafers, including capillary wetting, wedge extrusion, wire intersection, electroless plating, electroforming, double-sided sputtering and through-hole electroplating. The respective strengths and weaknesses of these techniques are discussed and compared, with double-sided sputtering and the through-hole plating method achieving best results. In addition, hollow conductors provided by the technique are available for solder refill, providing a natural way of forming an electrically connected stack of SOS wafers.

On the symmetric form of systems of conservation laws with entropy

The present investigation has the objective to review the general structure of system of conservation laws with entropy, giving particular attention to a presentation of symmetric formulations of the equations of gas dynamics. Systems of hyperbolic conservation laws are considered, taking into account the case in which a system of equations is symmetric hyperbolic, questions of symmetrization, and entropy functions. The Euler equations for a polytropic gas in conservation form are considered. The symmetric form retains the conservation properties of the equations. Weak solutions remain, therefore, unchanged. Of particular computational interest is the possibility of using the symmetric form.
