Field space geometry and nonlinear supersymmetry

We propose a geometric formulation of effective field theories via nonlinear supersymmetry. Nonsupersymmetric particles are embedded in constrained superfields governed by a nonlinear σ model, and operators are collected into potentials on the target space. The use of chiral superfields standardizes the treatment of flavor across scalars and fermions, and the minimal jet bundle extension makes invariance under derivative field redefinitions manifest. Coulomb Branch Amplitudes from a Deformed Amplituhedron Geometry

The amplituhedron provides, via geometric means, the all-loop integrand of scattering amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Unfortunately, dimensional regularization, used conventionally for integration, breaks the beautiful geometric picture. This motivates us to propose a “deformed” amplituhedron. Focusing on the four-particle amplitude, we introduce two deformation parameters, which can be interpreted as particle masses. We provide evidence that the mass pattern corresponds to a specific choice of vacuum expectation values on the Coulomb branch. The deformed amplitude is infrared finite, making the answer well defined in four dimensions. Leveraging four-dimensional integration techniques based on differential equations, we compute the amplitude up to two loops. In the limit where the deformation parameters are taken to zero, we recover the known Bern-Dixon-Smirnov amplitude. In the limit where only one deformation parameter is taken to zero, we find a connection to the angle-dependent cusp anomalous dimension. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Probing electromagnetic nonreciprocity with quantum geometry of photonic states

Reciprocal and nonreciprocal effects in dielectric and magnetic materials provide crucial information about the microscopic properties of electrons. However, experimentally distinguishing the two has proven to be challenging, especially when the associated effects are extremely small. To this end, we propose a contactless detection using a cross-cavity device where a material of interest is placed at its center. We show that the optical properties of the material, such as Kerr and Faraday rotation, or birefringence, manifest in the coupling between the cavity's electromagnetic modes and in the shift of their resonant frequencies. By calculating the dynamics of a geometrical photonic state, we formulate a measurement protocol based on the quantum metric and quantum process tomography that isolates the individual components of the material's complex refractive index and minimizes the quantum mechanical Cramér-Rao bound on the variance of the associated parameter estimation. Our approach is expected to be applicable across a broad spectrum of experimental platforms including Fock states in optical cavities, or coherent states in microwave and THz resonators. Sagittally focusing X-ray spectrometer in asymmetric Laue geometry

A sagittally focusing transmission-diffraction X-ray spectrometer is proposed. Sagittal focusing is achieved using an asymmetric Laue reflection. The shape of the crystal is constructed to achieve sagittal focusing of the X-ray spectrum into a line on a flat detector pointed at the crystal. Here, we show that the resulting X-ray flux (photons/area) delivered to the detector can be greater by more than two orders of magnitude compared to that of a sagittally flat Laue spectrometer.

TEAMER: Crossflow Turbine Fairing Geometry Optimization - Report and CFD Modeling Files

The dataset includes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and simulation files for crossflow turbines as well as a detailed project report. The report documents the project undertaken by the Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) to design and optimize a modular fairing for the Modular RivGen Marine Hydrokinetic (MHK) turbine, which enhances the efficient deployment and operation of turbine arrays. The project focused on optimizing the hydrodynamic performance of the fairing using CFD, with an emphasis on two key geometric parameters: the fairing's cross-sectional shape and the spacing between the rotor and the fairing. The analysis aimed to maximize net power output while also assessing discretized loading to evaluate ultimate and fatigue loads on the turbine components. The numerical modeling was conducted using both the commercial CFD software Star-CCM+ and the open-source code openFOAM, with the latter utilizing the actuator line library, turbinesFOAM. This dual-code approach was intended to increase confidence in the results and demonstrate the viability of using open-source tools for high-fidelity marine energy modeling. This dataset includes all necessary files for actuator line simulations in openFOAM, as well as 2D blade-resolved CFD results, along with Python and Java scripts for setting up and post-processing simulations.

ECAL Calibration and Energy Resolution for a 10TeV Detector Geometry

In the pursuit of a muon collider operating at ~10 TeV center-of-mass-energy, designing a highly accurate and sensitive detector is crucial. Calorimetry plays a key part in any detector setup, as we rely on our calorimeters for energy reconstruction and particle identification. Therefore, an effective calorimeter must be extremely well-calibrated and achieve excellent resolution. This poster will report on efforts to achieve a comprehensive energy calibration of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) for our 10 TeV detector design. This calibration is necessary in order to achieve desired energy resolution for reconstructed photons across a wide range of energies (0-1TeV). We report on the challenges introduced by the new location of the solenoid in our latest 10 TeV detector design, the necessity of a calibration strategy that is both energy-dependent and angularly dependent, and the resulting effects on photon energy resolution.

Optimization of Fairing Geometry for ORPC Modular RivGen Power System: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

The work will optimize the hydrodynamic performance and flow augmentation of Ocean Renewable Power Company's (ORPC) modular fairing for their cross-flow marine hydrokinetic (MHK) turbine, using a computational fluid dynamics study. The influence of the fairing cross-sectional shape and rotor-fairing spacing will be assessed, to maximize power production and minimize structural loads.
