The Handling Frame Assembly Table is a custom designed piece of equipment developed to support the NIF Sustainment Project. The NIF Sustainment project's goal is to refurbish the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world’s largest and most energetic laser, so it can continue advancing research in fusion energy, national security, and high energy density physics. A key aspect of this effort involves replacing all 1,728 blast shields on the NIF, which requires specialized equipment such as the Handling Frame Assembly Table to support the production of new blast shields. This project follows a systems engineering approach that guides the design sequence. This report documents the design process from initial concept through final design, including stakeholder analysis, requirements development, conceptual design, design analysis and validation, and final design. Future work will focus on building and commissioning the system.

An Analysis of Potential Space Shuttle Cargo-Handling Modes of Operation

This report attempts to indicate the current status of Space Shuttle cargo handling analysis. It is intended for use by the various organizations operating in support of the Space Shuttle effort who are investigating problems not necessarily affected by the frequent configuration and approach changes imposed on the primary task team and contractor personnel. The various studies have been analyzed and the results interwoven with the results of in-house efforts. The problems involved in orbital docking, payload extraction and transfer, cargo handling, and special-purpose missions are discussed and some tentative conclusions and recommendations are presented. This report has been reviewed and approved for release by the MSFC Shuttle Task Team. However, no statements made herein should be interpreted as position statements with respect to the Space Shuttle, the direction of future efforts, or intended methods of operation. This document reflects the view of the author, following analysis of the data available, and should not be construed as an official recommendation.

Assessment of lifting body vehicle handling qualities

Handling qualities have always been vitally important to the pilot. Before the current series of lifting body flight tests, there was speculation and concern about how this class of wingless vehicle would handle. The general behavior of the three lifting bodies in flight is described in broad terms in this paper, and some specific examples of behavior that may be of special interest from the pilot's viewpoint are presented. In addition, comments are offered concerning simulation requirements.

A shuttle and space station manipulator system for assembly, docking, maintenance, cargo handling and spacecraft retrieval (preliminary design). Volume 3: Concept analysis. Part 1: Technical

Information backing up the key features of the manipulator system concept and detailed technical information on the subsystems are presented. Space station assembly and shuttle cargo handling tasks are emphasized in the concept analysis because they involve shuttle berthing, transferring the manipulator boom between shuttle and station, station assembly, and cargo handling. Emphasis is also placed on maximizing commonality in the system areas of manipulator booms, general purpose end effectors, control and display, data processing, telemetry, dedicated computers, and control station design.

Handling qualities criteria for the space shuttle orbiter during the terminal phase of flight

It was found that large portions of the military handling qualities specification are directly applicable. However a number of additional and substitute criteria are recommended for areas not covered or inadequately covered in the military specification. Supporting pilot/vehicle analyses and simulation experiments were conducted and are described. Results are also presented of analytical and simulator evaluations of three specific interim Orbiter designs which provided a test of the proposed handling qualities criteria. The correlations between the analytical and experimental evaluations were generally excellent.

Statistical survey of XB-70 airplane responses and control usage with an illustration of the application to handling qualities criteria

The magnitude and frequency of occurrence of aircraft responses and control inputs during 27 flights of the XB-70 airplane were measured. Exceedance curves are presented for the airplane responses and control usage. A technique is presented which makes use of these exceedance curves to establish or verify handling qualities criteria. This technique can provide a means of incorporating current operational experience in handling qualities requirements for future aircraft.

Development of a container for handling, testing, and storing discrete microelectronic components

A container has been developed for handling, testing, burning-in, and storing discrete microelectronic components without removal from the protective package. The package was designed to accommodate the leadless inverted device and other carrier-mounted active devices and chip-type discrete resistors and capacitors. Before the indicated development, components were handled and tested in various ways, some of which resulted in damage or contamination. The basic design of the container utilizes precision machined printed circuit boards and chemically milled (photoetched) contact springs. Included in this design for protection is an O-ring-sealed cover. Methods of fabrication and limitations of the current hardware are presented. Current applications of and possible extensions to the technology are discussed.

Space shuttle data handling and communications considerations.

Operational and development flight instrumentation, data handling subsystems and communication requirements of the space shuttle orbiter are discussed. Emphasis is made on data gathering methods, crew display data, computer processing, recording, and telemetry by means of a digital data bus. Also considered are overall communication conceptual system aspects and design features allowing a proper specification of telemetry encoders and instrumentation recorders. An adaptive bit rate concept is proposed to handle the telemetry bit rates which vary with the amount of operational and experimental data to be transmitted. A split-phase encoding technique is proposed for telemetry to cope with the excessive bit jitter and low bit transition density which may affect television performance.

Structural interaction with transportation and handling systems

Problems involved in the handling and transportation of finished space vehicles from the factory to the launch site are presented, in addition to recommendations for properly accounting for in space vehicle structural design, adverse interactions during transportation. Emphasis is given to the protection of vehicle structures against those environments and loads encountered during transportation (including temporary storage) which would exceed the levels that the vehicle can safely withstand. Current practices for verifying vehicle safety are appraised, and some of the capabilities and limitations of transportation and handling systems are summarized.

Earth resources ground data handling systems for the 1980's

The system requirements of an operational data handling system for earth resources in the decade of the 1980's are investigated. Attention is drawn to problems encountered in meeting the stringent agricultural user requirements of that time frame. Such an understanding of requirements is essential not only in designing the ground system that will ultimately handle the data, but also in design studies of the earth resources platform, sensors, and data relay satellites which may be needed.

Nonlinear programming in design of control systems with specified handling qualities.

A method is described for using nonlinear programing in the computer-aided design of aircraft control systems. It is assumed that the quality of such systems depends on many criteria. These criteria are included in the constraints vector, and the design proceeds through a sequence of nonlinear programing solutions in which the designer varies the specification of sets of requirements levels. The method is applied to design of a lateral stability augmentation system (SAS) for a fighter aircraft, in which the requirements vector is chosen from the official handling-qualities specifications. Results are shown for several simple SAS configurations designed to obtain desirable handling qualities over all design flight conditions with minimum feedback gains.

Handling, control, and servicing of Shuttle payloads

Consideration of the prospects for accommodation of various kinds of payloads in the Space Shuttle. The influence of the SOAR study on Shuttle design as it pertains to payload support and accommodation requirements is discussed. The effect of Shuttle payload requirements on the approach to payload attachment is illustrated, and the requirements governing payload accommodation during the early transitional phase and the fully operational phase of the Shuttle are outlined. A payload handling system for manipulating payloads to or from the payload bay is described which provides a local handling capability for delivery and retrieval of most spacecraft. Options regarding the integration of scientific experiments and payloads into the Shuttle are reviewed, and the use of the Shuttle for servicing spacecraft in orbit is discussed.
