Gust Load Alleviation Control and Gust Estimation for a High Aspect Ratio Wing Wind Tunnel Model

This paper presents the gust load alleviation (GLA) study of the aspect ratio 13.5 Common Research Model (CRM) wind-tunnel model. This study details the design of the GLA controller in preparation for wind-tunnel testing in the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel at NASA Langley Research Center. An aeroservolastic (ASE) model was first reduced using a model reduction method that takes advantage of the sinusoidal steady-state response. Then, the reduced model was used to design an extended-state Kalman filter which estimates the states and the sinusoidal gust input. The GLA control was then derived using the optimal control solution to a multi-objective cost function. The results of the GLA controller indicate a 75.6% reduction in wing-root strain while maintaining robust stability margins. The final paper will include performance under sub-optimal conditions, e.g., sensor noise, uncertainty in gust frequency, etc..

An aeroservolastic (ASE) model is first reduced using a model reduction method that takes advantage of the sinusoidal steady-state response. Then, the reduced model is used to design an extended-state Kalman filter which estimates the states and the sinusoidal gust input. The GLA control is then derived using the optimal control solution to a multi-objective cost function. The results of the GLA controller indicate a 69.07% reduction in wing-root strain without sensor noise and 68.45% reduction with sensor noise, while maintaining robust stability margins. An adaptive GLA controller is developed for uncertain gust frequency and shows a 71.03% reduction in wing root strain compared to the non-adaptive control reduction of just 39.19%.

Multi-Objective Optimal Control of High Aspect Ratio Wing Wind Tunnel Model

This paper presents the design of a multi-objective optimal controller for the 13.5 aspect ratio Common Research Model (CRM) wind tunnel model. A Pareto front analysis is performed to provide the optimal tradeoff between the competing objectives - gust load alleviation, maneuver load alleviation, and drag minimization - so that the weighting matrices for the control law are selected optimally. Also presented are two formulations of the controller: a state feedback with Kalman filter design, and an output feedback form where sensors are used directly for feedback control. The controller demonstrates a reduced peak-to-peak strain of 45.78% while also reducing drag and mean bending moment. An output feedback formulation for gust load alleviation is formulated and produces a 53% reduction in the strain response due to a gust input.

Skin Friction Reduction by Micro-Blowing Technique

A system and method for reducing skin friction of an object in relative motion to a fluid. A skin forming a boundary between the object and the fluid, the skin having holes through which micro-blowing of air is blown and a transmitting mechanism for transmitting air through the skin. The skin has an inner layer and an outer layer. the inner layer being a low permeable porous sheet, the outer layer being a plate having high aspect ratio high porosity. and small holes. The system may further include a suction apparatus for suctioning air from the outer layer. The method includes the steps of transmitting air through the inner layer and passing the air transmitted through the inner layer to the outer layer. The method may further include the step of bleeding air off the outer layer using the suction apparatus.

Solar Cruiser TRAC Boom Development

The TRAC boom studied is a 30 meter, high-aspect ratio and highly nonlinear structural element planned for the NASA Solar Cruiser spacecraft where it would serve as the solar sail’s skeletal system designed to deploy the packaged reflective sail membrane as well as support operational sail tension loads for flight. Key design drivers for this boom are understanding and characterizing load-deformation behavior and quantifying buckling performance–under flight conditions (zero gravity). Knowing that the full-scale solar sail system cannot be feasibly tested for flight conditions under Earth’s gravity, a building block approach is methodically followed to verify finite element analysis (FEA) predictions and to evolve the finite element model (FEM) accordingly, beginning with the lowest level complexity to match global elastic behavior to the highest level complexity to bound theoretical responses under conservative expected flight conditions. Although the testing campaign for the TRAC boom has not developed yet to produce a full-scale test data point that loads the boom to failure, the fidelity of simulations have evolved with success and warrant further interest and work on this high-aspect ratio, but highly stable, deployable structural boom.

Development of a Prediction Scheme for High Aspect-Ratio Jet Noise

Circulation control wings are a type of pneumatic high-lift device that have been extensively researched as to their aerodynamic benefits. However, there has been little research into the possible airframe noise reduction benefits of a circulation control wing. The key element of noise is the jet noise associated with the jet sheet emitted from the blowing slot. This jet sheet is essentially a high aspect-ratio rectangular jet. A recent study on high aspect-ratio jet noise was performed on a nozzle with aspect-ratios ranging from 100 to 3,000. In addition to the acoustic data, fluid dynamic measurements were made as well. This paper uses the results of these two studies and attempts to develop a prediction scheme for high aspect-ratio jet noise

Aeroacoustics of a High Aspect-Ratio Jet

Circulation control wings are a type of pneumatic high-lift device that have been extensively researched as to their aerodynamic benefits. However, there has been little research into the possible airframe noise reduction benefits of a circulation control wing. The key element of noise is the jet noise associated with the jet sheet emitted from the blowing slot. This jet sheet is essentially a high aspect-ratio rectangular jet. Thus, to fully understand the noise of a circulation control wing, the noise of high aspect-ratio rectangular jets must also be understood. A high aspect-ratio nozzle was fabricated to study the general characteristics of high aspect-ratio jets with aspect ratios from 100 to 3000. The jet noise of this nozzle was proportional to the 8" power of the jet velocity. It was also found that the jet noise was proportional to the slot height to the 312 power and slot width to the 1/2 power.

Jet Surface Interaction Scrubbing Noise from High Aspect-Ratio Rectangular Jets

Concepts envisioned for the future of civil air transport consist of unconventional propulsion systems in the close proximity of the airframe. Distributed propulsion system with exhaust configurations that resemble a high aspect ratio rectangular jet are among geometries of interest. Nearby solid surfaces could provide noise shielding for the purpose of reduced community noise. Interaction of high-speed jet exhaust with structure could also generate new sources of sound as a result of flow scrubbing past the structure, and or scattered noise from sharp edges. The present study provides a theoretical framework to predict the scrubbing noise component from a high aspect ratio rectangular exhaust in proximity of a solid surface. The analysis uses the Greens function (GF) to the variable density Pridmore-Brown equation in a transversely sheared mean flow. Sources of sound are defined as the auto-covariance function of second-rank velocity fluctuations in the jet plume, and are modeled using a RANS-based acoustic analogy approach. Acoustic predictions are presented in an 8:1 aspect ratio rectangular exhaust at three subsonic Mach numbers. The effect of nearby surface on the scrubbing noise component is shown on both reflected and shielded sides of the plate.

Fluid Dynamics of a High Aspect-Ratio Jet

Circulation control wings are a type of pneumatic high-lift device that have been extensively researched as to their aerodynamic benefits. However, there has been little research into the possible airframe noise reduction benefits of a circulation control wing. The key element of noise is the jet noise associated with the jet sheet emitted from the blowing slot. High aspect-ratio jet acoustic results (aspect-ratios from 100 to 3,000) from a related study showed that the jet noise of this type of jet was proportional to the slot height to the 3/2 power and slot width to the 1/2 power. Fluid dynamic experiments were performed in the present study on the high aspect-ratio nozzle to gain understanding of the flow characteristics in an effort to relate the acoustic results to flow parameters. Single hot-wire experiments indicated that the jet exhaust from the high aspect-ratio nozzle was similar to a 2-d turbulent jet. Two-wire space-correlation measurements were performed to attempt to find a relationship between the slot height of the jet and the length-scale of the flow noise generating turbulence structure. The turbulent eddy convection velocity was also calculated, and was found to vary with the local centerline velocity, and also as a function of the frequency of the eddy.
