High-torque precision stepping drive

Stepping drive has been designed for precise incremental angular positioning of scale models of spacecraft about a horizontal axis in order to accurately measure antenna receiving and transmitting characteristics. Positioning is insured by spring-loaded, self-locking plungers.

Iris-leaf core retainer for a surface drill

Iris-leaf core retainer insures retention of a complete sample within the drill string. Individual overlapping leaves will not rupture or tear out when they come in contact with the oncoming core.

Fundamental problems of injector design

The principal control of the combustion within a liquid-propellant rocket thrust chamber is provided by the injector. Only when precise control of the injection process is attained can optimum performance, dynamic stability, heat transfer compatibility and reproducibility be provided. Control must be designed into each step of the injection process with sufficient isolation provided to insure stability. In the design of the injector manifolding, the main desire is to provide mass and mixture ratio regulation across the injector face. The design of the injector orifices must be such that this mass and mixture ratio control is retained through the orifices and imparted to the droplet sprays that are produced. Furthermore, the orifice design must control the size and distribution of the droplets generated so that combustion will be completed within the chamber. Mechanical damping devices are often required to protect the early mixing zone from transverse velocities and associated displacement effects in the chamber. Only when each phase of the injection process is carefully controlled can the design aims be reached.

Hydraulic brake safety valve

Safety device, consisting of three separate fluid chambers, insures that two wheels of a brake system continue to function if a failure occurs.

Fail-safe numerical control

System provides duplicate set of control logic circuitry. Comparators insure that the same data is present in both circuits. If any discrepancy is found, the machine is automatically stopped, before damage can occur.

Toroidal mirrors provide virtual walls for breaks in light pipes

Section of light pipe consists of separated segments having opposed toroidal mirrors that intercept meridional rays to present virtual wall in space between mirrors, thus insuring uninterrupted light transmission down the pipe. Design affords internal access to pipe section. Segments are electrically or thermally insulated from one another.

Crack Growth of D6 Steel in Air and High Pressure Oxygen

Fracture and subcritical flaw growth characteristics were experimentally determined for electroless nickel plated D6 steel in dry air and high pressure oxygen environments as applicable to the Lunar Module/Environmental Control System (LM/ECS) descent gaseous oxygen (GOX) tank. The material tested included forgings, plate, and actual LM/ECS descent GOX tank material. Parent metal and TIG (tungsten inert gas) welds were tested. Tests indicate that proof testing the tanks at 4000 pounds per square inch or higher will insure safe operation at 3060 pounds per square inch. Although significant flaw growth can occur during proofing, subsequent growth of flaws during normal tank operation is negligible.

Rotary shutter mechanism contains optical elements

Two cylindrical shutter mechanisms having fixed outer sleeves and rotating inner sleeves use single stepping motor and Geneva mechanism to sequentially move optical components into path of ultraviolet monochromator for output control to photomultiplier. Photometric and wavelength calibration sources insure shutter positions according to operational phases.

A feasibility study of heat-pipe-cooled leading edges for hypersonic cruise aircraft

A theoretical study of the use of heat pipe structures for cooling the leading edges of hypersonic cruise aircraft was carried out over a Mach number range of 6 to 12. Preliminary design studies showed that a heat pipe cooling structure with a 33-in. chordwise length could maintain the maximum temperature of a 65 deg sweepback wing with a 0.5-in. leading edge radius below 1600 F during cruise at Mach 8. A few relatively minor changes in the steady-state design of the structure were found necessary to insure satisfactory cooling during the climb to cruise speed and altitude. It was concluded that heat pipe cooling is an attractive, feasible technique for limiting leading edge temperatures of hypersonic cruise aircraft.
