Wide angle Michelson Doppler imaging interferometer

The optical system, stepping control, phase and modulation depth, array detector, and directions sensor are described for a specialized type of Michelson interferometer which works at sufficiently high resolution to measure the line widths and Doppler shifts of naturally occurring atmospheric emissions. With its imaging capability, the instrument can potentially supply this data independently for each element of the 100 x 100 detector array. The experiment seeks: (1) to obtain vertical profiles of atmospheric winds and temperatures as functions of latitude by observing near the limb; (2) to acquire exploratory wind and temperature data on smaller scale structures in airglow irregularities and in auroral forms; and (3) to collaborate with other Spacelab experiments, such as barium cloud releases, in providing wind and temperature data.

Implementation of Nonlinear Control Laws for an Optical Delay Line

This paper discusses the implementation of a globally stable nonlinear controller algorithm for the Realtime Interferometer Control System Testbed (RICST) brassboard optical delay line (ODL) developed for the Interferometry Technology Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Surface control techniques for the segmented primary mirror in the large lunar telescope

The large lunar telescope is a proposed moon-based telescope which incorporates a sixteen-meter segmented primary mirror. An error budget is developed for the active control system of the primary mirror. A control methodology for the primary mirror is then described which utilizes piston sensors for measuring the relative piston error between adjacent segments as well as a separate sensor which measures the tilt of each segment with respect to the pointing direction of the telescope. A trade study is conducted in which the following types of tilt sensors are examined to determine their applicability to this program: stellar wavefront sensors, such as a Hartmann-Shack or a shearing interferometer; holographic optical elements; interferometers; scanning systems; and some nonoptical systems which electronically measure the relative tilt between adjacent segments. In addition, two independent methods of quantitatively verifying the performance of the telescope using either a phase retrieval algorithm or an image sharpening technique, both of which are based on the quality of a stellar image, are presented.

Demonstration of tokamak vertical stability control based on non-inductive Faraday-effect polarimetry measurements

Long-pulse or steady-state fusion reactors are envisioned to control vertical stability based on non-inductive measurements, i.e. that do not rely on temporal change of magnetic field. For the first time, vertical stability control using non-inductive Faraday-effect polarimetry measurements has been demonstrated. The Radial Interferometer-Polarimeter system on DIII-D is capable of microsecond resolution and was used to absolutely determine the vertical position of the plasma magnetic axis Z 0 . A vertical stability controller was developed to robustly stabilize diverted plasmas using Faraday-based measurements. The system was able to stabilize against vertical displacement events with growth rates up to 350 s -1 in elongated and elliptical plasma shapes, and instabilities with even higher growth rates are likely to be controllable with further improvements to controller tuning. Tests show that the Faraday-based controller remains effective and is capable of recovering from loss of control even when the plasma vertical position is far from the region where the linear model used to calculate Z 0 is most valid. Faraday control has also been activated during plasma ramp-up, demonstrating the robustness of the technique to larger systematic diagnostic uncertainty at low electron density.
