Development of a Small-Aperture Cos-theta Dipole Insert Coil Based on Bi2212 Rutherford Cable and Stress Management Structure

The U.S. Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) is developing high-field accelerator magnets with magnetic fields beyond the limits of Nb3Sn technology based on high temperature superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8-x (Bi2212). However, Bi2212 wires and cables are sensitive to transverse stresses and strains, which are substantial in high-field accelerator magnets. To prevent large degradation of the Bi2212 coils and achieve the required field quality, an innovative design which provides turn positioning during coil fabrication and operation and manage azimuthal and radial strains/stresses in the coil has been proposed at FNAL. This paper describes the development of a small-aperture two-layer Bi2212 dipole coil with stress management. The main parameters of the Bi2212 wire and Rutherford cable, the design of coil stress management structure and its plastic model, the coil mechanical analysis in the dipole mirror configuration are presented and discussed.

Technology Advancement and Insertion into Operating Nuclear Facilities

Key challenges in the NNSA modernization effort are centered around the selection of new processing / production technologies to deploy in existing, operating, and oftentimes, aging nuclear facilities. New uranium processing technologies may offer significant improvements in worker and environmental safety, material control and accountability, and production efficiencies, but adaptation of these technologies into existing facilities presents unique (and usually, difficult) engineering solutions for each new technology. This presentation discusses approaches utilized at Y-12 to mature and demonstrate new processing and production technologies for deployment into aging nuclear facilities. The technology advancement lifecycle (from concept to deployment) of uranium electrorefining technologies will be reviewed, as a prototypical example, to describe steps and approaches utilized at Y-12 (and NNSA Sites) to (i) mature technologies and manufacturing strategies, (ii) establish testbed capabilities for full-scale process demonstrations, and (iii) reduce risks associated with operational disruptions when commissioning new uranium processing technologies.

Highly Efficient Uniaxial In-Plane Stretching of a 2D Material via Ion Insertion

On-chip dynamic strain engineering requires efficient micro-actuators that can generate large in-plane strains. Inorganic electrochemical actuators are unique in that they are driven by low voltages (≈1 V) and produce considerable strains (≈1%). However, actuation speed and efficiency are limited by mass transport of ions. Minimizing the number of ions required to actuate is thus key to enabling useful “straintronic” devices. Here, it is shown that the electrochemical intercalation of exceptionally few lithium ions into WTe 2 causes large anisotropic in-plane strain: 5% in one in-plane direction and 0.1% in the other. This efficient stretching of the 2D WTe 2 layers contrasts to intercalation-induced strains in related materials which are predominantly in the out-of-plane direction. The unusual actuation of Li x WTe 2 is linked to the formation of a newly discovered crystallographic phase, referred to as Td', with an exotic atomic arrangement. On-chip low-voltage (<0.2 V) control is demonstrated over the transition to the novel phase and its composition. Within the Td'-Li 0.5-δ WTe 2 phase, a uniaxial in-plane strain of 1.4% is achieved with a change of δ of only 0.075. This makes the in-plane chemical expansion coefficient of Td'-Li 0.5-δ WTe 2 far greater than of any other single-phase material, enabling fast and efficient planar electrochemical actuation.

Clustering and Cliques in Preferential Attachment Random Graphs with Edge Insertion

In this paper, we investigate the global clustering coefficient (a.k.a transitivity) and clique number of graphs generated by a preferential attachment random graph model with an additional feature of allowing edge connections between existing vertices. Specifically, at each time step t, either a new vertex is added with probability f(t), or an edge is added between two existing vertices with probability 1 – f(t). We establish concentration inequalities for the global clustering and clique number of the resulting graphs under the assumption that f(t) is a regularly varying function at infinity with index of regular variation –$\gamma$, where $\gamma$ $\in$ [0, 1). Finally, we also demonstrate an inverse relation between these two statistics: the clique number is essentially the reciprocal of the global clustering coefficient.

Modeling reactivity insertion experiments of TRISO particles in NSRR using BISON

This research presents BISON simulations of stress, temperature, and failure probability of tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles subjected to transient power pulse conditions in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR). We report that by modifying the default elastic properties of the PyC and the UO 2 coefficient of thermal expansion correlation, BISON was found to produce suitable agreement with the observed and independently simulated results when appropriate shape and scale Weibull parameters for SiC failure were chosen. The Weibull parameter effects were also explored within the range of SiC failure and were applied using experimental data from hemispherical crush testing.
