Study provides basic information for designing models and conducting thermal-dynamic structural tests. Factors considered are development and interpretation of thermal-dynamic structural scaling laws; identification of major problem areas; and presentation of model fabrication, instrumentation, and test procedures.
The automobile-driver describing function for lateral position control was estimated for three subjects from frequency response analysis of straight road test results. The measurement procedure employed an instrumented full size sedan with known steering response characteristics, and equipped with a lateral lane position measuring device based on video detection of white stripe lane markings. Forcing functions were inserted through a servo driven double steering wheel coupling the driver to the steering system proper. Random appearing, Gaussian, and transient time functions were used. The quasi-linear models fitted to the random appearing input frequency response characterized the driver as compensating for lateral position error in a proportional, derivative, and integral manner. Similar parameters were fitted to the Gabor transformed frequency response of the driver to transient functions. A fourth term corresponding to response to lateral acceleration was determined by matching the time response histories of the model to the experimental results. The time histories show evidence of pulse-like nonlinear behavior during extended response to step transients which appear as high frequency remnant power.
Description of a multiring probe placed in an ionospheric flow simulation chamber utilizing a modified Kaufman ion engine for its plasma source. The pertinent details of the probe design, instrumentation, and operating procedures are discussed, and the preliminary results obtained are presented.
A general description of the Langley 6-inch expansion tube is presented along with discussion of the basic components, internal resistance heater, arc-discharge assemblies, instrumentation, and operating procedure. Preliminary results using unheated and resistance-heated helium as the driver gas are presented. The driver-gas pressure ranged from approximately 17 to 59 MPa and its temperature ranged from 300 to 510 K. Interface velocities of approximately 3.8 to 6.7 km/sec were generated between the test gas and the acceleration gas using air as the test gas and helium as the acceleration gas. Test flow quality and comparison of measured and predicted expansion-tube flow quantities are discussed.
The far infrared spectra of H II regions are investigated. A liquid helium cooled grating spectrometer designed to make observations from the NASA Lear Jet is described along with tests of the instrument. The observing procedure on the Lear Jet telescope is described and the method of data analysis is discussed. Results are presented from a search for the (O III) 88.16 micron line. An upper limit on the emission in this line is obtained and line detection is described. Results are compared to theoretical predictions, and future applications of fine structure line observations are discussed. Coarse resolution results are given along with calibration problems. The spectra obtained are compared to models for dust emission.
Atmospheric ozone, and related flight and meteorological data for May 1975, obtained during 49 flights of a Pan American World Airways 747, are available as GASP tape VL0003 from the National Climatic Center, Asheville, North Carolina. In addition to the GASP data, tropopause pressure fields obtained from NMC archives for the dates of the GASP flights are included on the data tape. Flight routes and dates, instrumentation, data processing procedures, and data tape specifications are described.
A full-scale crash test of a large troop/cargo carrying CH-47C helicopter was conducted at the Langley impact dynamics research facility. The crash test of this large helicopter was performed as part of a joint U.S. Army-NASA helicopter test program to provide dynamic structural and seat response data. The test, the procedures employed, the instrumentation, a general assessment of the resulting damage, and typical levels of accelerations experienced during the crash are reported. Various energy-absorbing seating systems for crew and troops were installed and instrumented to provide data for use in the development of design criteria for future aircraft. The crash conditions were selected to simulate known crash conditions and are representative of the 95th percentile accident environment for an autorotating helicopter. Visual examination of the crashed test specimen indicated irreparable damage to many of the structural components. The highest accelerations were recorded by the accelerometers located on the cabin floor in the aft section of the helicopter, directly above the primary impact location and on the floor of the cockpit above the secondary impact location(s).
The NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP) is obtaining measurements of atmospheric trace constituents in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere using fully automated air sampling systems on board several commercial B-747 aircraft in routine airline service. Atmospheric ozone, water vapor, and related flight and meteorological data were obtained during 139 flights of a United Airlines B-747 and a Pan American World Airways B-747 from December 1975 through March 1976. In addition, sample bottles were exposed during three flights and analyzed for trichlorofluoromethane, and filter samples were exposed during five flights and analyzed for sulfates, nitrates, and chlorides. Flight routes and dates, instrumentation, data processing procedures, data tape specifications, and selected analyses are discussed.

In addition, trichlorofluoromethane data obtained from laboratory analysis of two whole air samples collected in flight are reported. In addition to the GASP data, tropopause pressure fields obtained from NMC archives for the dates of the GASP flights are included on the data tape. Flight routes and dates, instrumentation, data processing procedures, and data tape specifications are described in this report. Selected analyses including ozone and sample bottle data are also presented.

Some techniques used to extract quantitative data from the information contained in photographic images produced by grazing incidence soft X-ray optical systems are described. The discussion is focussed on the analysis of the data returned by the S-054 X-Ray Spectrographic Telescope Experiment on Skylab. The parameters of the instrument and the procedures used for its calibration are described. The technique used to convert photographic density to focal plane X-ray irradiance is outlined. The deconvolution of the telescope point response function from the image data is discussed. Methods of estimating the temperature, pressure, and number density of coronal plasmas are outlined.
A detailed description of the hypersonic CF4 tunnel is presented along with discussion of the basic components, instrumentation, and operating procedure. Operational experience with the CF4 reclaimer and lead-bath heater is discussed. Comparison of measured and predicted shock detachment distance on a sphere and pressure distributions measured on a sharp leading-edge flat plate revealed the absence of significant flow nonuniformity and lent creditability to predicted free stream flow conditions. The economic operation of this facility centers about the CF4 reclaimer, which was designed to operate at an efficiency of 90 to 95 percent. A number of modifications were made to the reclaimer system to improve its performance, and presently, the system reclaims approximately 75 percent of the test gas. Even with current budgetary constraints, this efficiency permits the CF4 tunnel to be operated as a viable research wind tunnel.

The GASP atmospheric trace constituent data currently available are considered. Included on tapes are in-situ measurements of atmospheric ozone, carbon monoxide, water vapor, and clouds, data from laboratory analysis of filters exposed in flight, and related flight and meteorological data. Measurements of ozone levels within the first class cabin of these aircraft are also reported. In addition to the GASP data, tropopause pressures obtained from time and space interpolation of NMC archived data for the dates of the flights are included. Reported herein are the flight routes and dates, instrumentation, data processing procedures, data tape specifications, and analyses of the cabin ozone measurements.

These data are now available on GASP tapes VL0007 & VL0008 from the National Climatic Center, Asheville, North Carolina. In addition to the GASP data, tropopause pressure fields obtained from NMC archives for the dates of the GASP flights are included on the data tape. Advanced design and testing techniques developed at NASA Lewis to achieve high efficiency in small turbomachines are described. Small radial and axial turbines and compressors were built for space power systems and associated studies at the Lewis Research Center. A six stage axial compressor of 3.5 inches diameter and axial turbines of 5 and 8.5 inches diameter were included. Radial turbines and compressors ranged from 3.5 to 6 inches. Topics discussed include maximum efficiency as a function of speed, the effect of compressibility on passage size, the use of quasi-orthogonals to calculate cross-channel velocity gradients, a design point velocity diagram study for axial turbines, and estimating off-design performance. Special turbine instruments and calibration procedures were developed to test compressors and turbines, to determine Reynolds and size number effects clearance, specific speed effects, and compressor performance. Laboratory tests conducted to study system operation and shaft and bearing motions are also reviewed.
The data currently available from GASP, including flight routes and dates, instrumentation, data processing procedures, and data tape specifications are described. Measurements of atmospheric ozone, cabin ozine, carbon monoxide, water vapor, particles, clouds, condensation nuclei, filter samples and related meteorological and flight information obtained during 562 flights of aircraft N533PA, N4711U, N655PA, and VH-EBE from October 3, 1977 through January 5, 1978 are reported. Data representing tropopause pressures obtained from time and space interpolation of National Meteorological Center archived data for the dates of the flights are included.
A standard high-speed, field-portable spectroradiometric measurement system built around a programmable microprocessor has been adapted to the form of a Reflectometer/Comparator. In this configuration, the instrument makes passive measurements of the absolute reflectance of agricultural plant canopies over a spectral range of 0.4 to 2.5 micrometers. Real-time absolute measurements are made possible by an optical chopper which constantly compares the target with the sun, and makes extensive measurements of solar reflectance from a variety of these targets. The paper describes the instrumentation and measurement procedures, reviews the software programming and discusses the results.
