Improving Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating Resolution for Position-Sensitive Sensors in Shock- and Detonation-Driven Experiments

Chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) are robust diagnostic sensors that are widely used to track detonation-driven and shock wave propagation. CFBGs are inscribed with a linearly chirped periodic index of refraction changes that alter the Bragg wavelength along the length of the probe. The light return of each individual Bragg element is captured by a detector at a unique time to map the full reflected spectrum. The CFBG spectrum is measured with a dispersive Fourier transform of the reflected light that temporally stretches the spectrum to increase spatial resolution and make a one-to-one map of the wavelength on a time axis. Here, we propose an improvement of CFBG temporal resolution by incorporating two co-linear laser pulses with orthogonal polarization states and a 5 ns time offset. The two separate signals were split and tracked by two separate detectors. An oscilloscope captured good separation in the signals, and two separate spectrograms were generated and interleaved in the post-processing of the data. This novel technique doubled the CFBG temporal resolution and led to a doubled location resolution. As a proof-of-concept of this technique, the resolution improvement was compared between standard CFBG measurements and the two polarization states method on a position-sensitive CFBG sensor. CFBG resolution doubling will advance sensor capabilities and will have a direct impact on improving capture and analysis in dynamic, high-explosive experiments.

The energy spectrum of primary cosmic ray electrons from 2 GeV to 200 GeV.

Use of a balloon-borne counter telescope with a gas Cerenkov counter to measure the energy of primary cosmic ray electrons between 2 and 200 GeV. Electrons are identified by the characteristic electron-photon shower which they produce in a 15 radiation length deep stack of high-Z material interleaved with scintillation counters. Calibrations with monoenergetic electrons up to 14 GeV and monoenergetic protons up to 28 GeV from accelerators are used to develop criteria to statistically separate electrons from proton-induced events. The results from six balloon flights (total exposure time 63 hours) are combined to obtain the electron energy spectrum. Up to about 30 GeV, the spectrum measured in this experiment can be directly checked with calibrations and agrees well with results from other experiments. Above this energy, the flux reported in the present work is somewhat higher than the determinations reported by most other authors. An apparent flattening of the energy spectrum above 50 GeV is not regarded as significant. There is no evidence for a steepening of the spectrum at energies below 200 GeV.

A time-division multiplexing system for asynchronous high-rate telemetry.

A time-division multiplexing system has been developed that is significantly different from commercially available equipments. Multiplexing is achieved by interleaving blocks of data from each source, preceded by a short coded bit pattern specifying the source of that particular block of data. Data blocks are transmitted as they become available from each particular source. Hence, synchronism of the input and output rates is not required. The prototype system can accommodate input rates as high as 461 kbit/sec on a single input channel, and output rates as high as 953 kbit/sec. The system makes possible use of an excess of 90% of channel capacity for information transmittal.

Effects of overlaps, stitches, and patches on multilayer insulation.

The effects of spacecraft installation-type discontinuities on aluminized Mylar multilayer insulation have been measured using an electrically heated cylindrical calorimeter. The experimental results have been reproducible within plus or minus 10% or better for identical blankets and less than plus or minus 5% for the same blanket. Good blanket performance can be obtained using short interleaving for joints, eliminating stitched seams, and using small patches, particularly over the hot side of stitches. The heat loss through stitching is excessive but highly localized. Analytical models matched to thermocouple test results are presented. The manner in which radiation and conduction participate in heat transfer adjacent to discontinuities is indicated. High lateral heat transfer is also established as an important phenomenon in the vicinity of a discontinuity.

Design, process development, manufacture, test and evaluation of boron-aluminum for space shuttle components

A multi phase boron-aluminum design and evaluation program for space shuttle components was conducted, culminating in the fabrication of a 1.22 m (48 inch) x 1.83 m (72 inch) boron-aluminum compression panel capable of distributing a point load of 1555 kN (350,000 lbs) into a uniform running load at a temperature of 589 K (600 F). This panel was of the skin-stringer construction with two intermediate frame supports; seven unidirectional stringers varied in thickness from 5 plies to 52 plies and the skin was contoured to thicknesses ranging from 10 plies to 62 plies. Both the stringers and the skin incorporated Ti-6Al-4V titanium interleaves to increase bearing and in-plane shear strength. The discrete program phases were materials evaluation, design studies, process technology development, fabrication and assembly, and test and evaluation.

The bi-composite transition joint

The application of advanced composite materials to high performance structure frequently results in the desire to fabricate a structure from more than one composite system in order to tailor the composite material capabilities to the design requirements. The bi-composite transition provides a means of joining two different composite structural systems without the weight and complexity of mechanical attachments. The monolayer plies or combinations of plies of one composite system are interleaved with and bonded to the plies of the adjacent composite system, thereby providing a direct load transfer between the two composite structures.

Mechanical properties of eutectic bonded boron aluminum

Results are presented of extensive testing recently completed on boron-aluminum composites to determine mechanical property data for structural design and analysis. Average property data and associated test methods are given for unidirectional and cross plied laminates at room temperature and 600 F. Results from crippling tests of hat-shaped stringers and mechanical fastener joint tests of laminates containing titanium interleaves are also presented. Compared to aluminum which has approximately same density, tests show that boron-aluminum loaded in compression is 4 1/2 times stronger and 3 1/2 times stiffer. When loaded in tension it is 2 times stronger and 3 times stiffer.

Families of shift-register sequences with impulsive correlation properties

A study of the linear feedback shift registers corresponding to a subset of nonprimitive irreducible polynomials over GF(2) has uncovered a class of sequences with interesting structures and cyclic correlation properties. These families of sequences are made up of interleaved identical sequences which are from primitive irreducible polynomials. Furthermore, they have correlation functions which are two or three valued, being constant at zero or a small value throughout most of their length with the exception of a small number of impulses. Each interval between such impulses on the correlograms uniquely corresponds to (and thus uniquely identifies) the member sequence or sequences producing it. It is shown that these families of sequences have direct application as error-correcting codes.

Performance of convolutional codes on fading channels typical of planetary entry missions

The performance of convolutional codes in fading channels typical of the planetary entry channel is examined in detail. The signal fading is due primarily to turbulent atmospheric scattering of the RF signal transmitted from an entry probe through a planetary atmosphere. Short constraint length convolutional codes are considered in conjunction with binary phase-shift keyed modulation and Viterbi maximum likelihood decoding, and for longer constraint length codes sequential decoding utilizing both the Fano and Zigangirov-Jelinek (ZJ) algorithms are considered. Careful consideration is given to the modeling of the channel in terms of a few meaningful parameters which can be correlated closely with theoretical propagation studies. For short constraint length codes the bit error probability performance was investigated as a function of E sub b/N sub o parameterized by the fading channel parameters. For longer constraint length codes the effect was examined of the fading channel parameters on the computational requirements of both the Fano and ZJ algorithms. The effects of simple block interleaving in combatting the memory of the channel is explored, using the analytic approach or digital computer simulation.
