Iodine Electrochemistry Dictates Voltage‐Induced Halide Segregation Thresholds in Mixed‐Halide Perovskite Devices

Abstract Owing to straightforward stoichiometry–bandgap tunability, mixed‐halide perovskites are ideal for many optoelectronic devices. However, unwanted halide segregation under operational conditions, including light illumination and voltage bias, restricts practical use. Additionally, the origin of voltage‐induced halide segregation is still unclear. Herein, a systematic voltage threshold study in mixed bromide/iodide perovskite devices is performed and leads to observation of three distinct voltage thresholds corresponding to the doping of the hole transport material (0.7 ± 0.1 V), halide segregation (0.95 ± 0.05 V), and degradation (1.15 ± 0.05 V) for an optically stable mixed‐halide perovskite composition with a low bromide content (10%). These empirical threshold voltages are minimally affected by composition until very Br‐rich compositions, which reveals the dominant role of iodide/triiodide/iodine electrochemistry in voltage‐induced Br/I phase separation and transport layer doping reactions in halide perovskite devices.

Impact of oxidation and carbonation on the release rates of iodine, selenium, technetium, and nitrogen from a cementitious waste form

Evaluation of the long-term retention mechanisms and potential release rates for the primary constituents of potential concern (COPCs) (i.e., Tc, I, Se, and nitrate) is necessary to determine if Cast Stone, a radioactive waste form, can meet performance objectives under near-surface disposal scenarios. In this work, a mineral and parameter set accounting for the solubility of I and Se in Cast Stone was developed based on pH-dependent and monolithic diffusion leaching test results, to extend a geochemical speciation model previously developed. The impact of oxidation and carbonation as environmental aging processes on the retention properties of Cast Stone for primary COPCs was systematically estimated. Physically, the effective diffusion coefficients of 4 COPCs in Cast Stone were increased after carbonation and/or oxidation, reflecting an increase in permeability to diffusion. Chemically, i) pH & pe conditions in the original Cast Stone were favorable for the stabilization of Tc, but not for I, Se, and N; ii) oxidation (with/without carbonation) of Cast Stone changed the pe & pH conditions to be detrimental for Tc stabilization; and iii) carbonation (with/without oxidation) of Cast Stone modified the pH & pe conditions to be beneficial for the stabilization of I (in system with Ag added) and Se.

Highly Conductive Iodine and Fluorine Dual-Doped Argyrodite Solid Electrolyte for Lithium Metal Batteries

Sulfide-type argyrodite solid electrolytes (SEs) with halide doping have attracted serious interest. Although other halides such as Cl and Br have been found to enhance Li-ion transport in argyrodites, the direct synthesis of efficiently conductive Li 6 PS 5 I without postprocessing has rarely been investigated. In this work, we report the one-step synthesis of highly conductive Li 6 PS 5 I with an impressive ionic conductivity of 2.5 × 10 –4 S cm –1 at room temperature through a solvent-based method. Moreover, by introducing F – to partially replace I – , hybrid-doped argyrodites Li 6 PS 5 F x I 1–x (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) have been synthesized. Li 6 PS 5 F 0.25 I 0.75 achieves the highest conductivity of 3.5 × 10 –4 S cm –1 due to the energetic preference for anion-disordering among F – /I – and S 2– , which facilitate faster Li transport as supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. With higher F content in argyrodites, Li 6 PS 5 F 0.75 I 0.25 displays the best electrochemical stability toward Li metal, as evidenced by long-term stable cycling in Li symmetric cells up to 1100 h. Solid-state Li metal batteries with an active cathode of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) display an initial specific capacity of 140 mAh g –1 and remain at 105 mAh g –1 after 200 cycles, suggesting great battery cycling performance. Furthermore, this research has developed new compositions in the argyrodite SE family which could lead to advancements in the development of solid-state Li metal batteries.

Iodine (I) Expulsion at Photoirradiated Mixed Halide Perovskite Interface. Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Visible light irradiation of the mixed halide perovskite film in contact with a solvent (dichloromethane, DCM) in which the film otherwise is stable, leads to selective expulsion of iodide (I) from the film with concurrent shift in the band edge to lower wavelengths. Here we have now employed mixed halide perovskites to uncover the influence of A-site cation (Methyl ammonium, MA and Cesium, Cs) on the mobility of iodide ions under photoirradiation. In the absence of solvent contact, the mixed halide perovskite films undergo photoinduced segregation with a rate constant that decreases with increasing Cs content. Interestingly, the iodide expulsion rate in DCM is strongly dependent on the rate of photoinduced segregation. At Cs atomic concentrations higher than 50%, the films become stable as the iodide expulsion is largely suppressed. The role of A-site cation in dictating the mobility of halide ions is discussed.
