Chloride Reduction of Mn 3+ in Mild Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Charge Ordered Defect Pyrochlore, CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 , a Canted Antiferromagnet with a Hard Ferromagnetic Component

Geometrically frustrated systems play an important role in studying new physical phenomena and unconventional thermodynamics. Charge ordered defect pyrochlores AM 2+ M 3+ F 6 offer a convenient platform for probing the interplay between electron distribution over M 2+ and M 3+ sites and structural distortions; however, they are limited to compounds with M 2+/3+ = V, Fe, Ni, and Cu due to difficulties in the simultaneous stabilization of other 3d elements in the +2 and +3 oxidation states. Herein, we employ Cl– anions under hydrothermal conditions for the mild reduction of Mn 2 O 3 in concentrated HF to obtain the CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 composition as a phase pure sample and study its properties. The magnetism of CsMn 2 F 6 was characterized by measuring the magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization data, and a magnetic transition to a canted antiferromagnet state was found at 24.1 K. We determined the magnetic structure of CsMn 2 F 6 using powder neutron diffraction, which revealed successive long-range ordering of the Mn 2+ and Mn 3+ sites that is accompanied by a second transition. As a result, the role and strength of magnetic exchange interactions were characterized using DFT calculations.

Unconventional Anomalous Hall Effect in Hexagonal Polar Magnet Y 3 Co 8 Sn 4

A rare realization of unconventional anomalous Hall effect (UAHE) both below and above the magnetic transition temperature (T C ) in a hexagonal noncentrosymmetric magnet Y 3 Co 8 Sn 4 , using a combined experimental and ab initio calculations. Occurrence of such UAHE is mainly attributed to the reciprocal ($\mathscr{KS}$) topology (i.e., the presence of topological Weyl points at/near the Fermi level), along with some contribution from the topological magnetic texture (at low temperatures), as inferred from the measured field-dependent ac susceptibility. The effect of UAHE on the measured transport behavior however evolves differently with temperature above and below T C = 53 K, suggesting different physical mechanism responsible in the two phases. A unique planar ferrimagnetic ordering is found to be the most stable state with ab-plane as the easy plane below T C . The simulated net magnetization and the moment per Co atom agrees fairly well with the experimentally measured values. A reasonably large anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) is also observed in both the phases (above and below T C ) of the present compound, which is again not so ubiquitous. In conclusion, the results underscore the family of R 3 Co 8 Sn 4 (R = rare earth) polar magnets as a compelling backdrop for exploring the synergy of magnetism and topological non-trivial electronic states, pivotal for spintronic applications.

Atomically Resolved Acoustic Dynamics Coupled with Magnetic Order in a Van der Waals Antiferromagnet

Magnetoelastic coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials enables a unique interplay between the spin and lattice degrees of freedom. Characterizing the elastic responses with atomic and femtosecond resolution across the magnetic transition is essential for guiding the design of magnetically tunable actuators and strain-mediated spintronic devices. Here, ultrafast X-ray diffraction employed at a free-electron laser reveals that the atomic displacements, wave vectors, and dispersion relations of acoustic phonon modes in a vdW antiferromagnet FePS3 are coupled with the magnetic order, by tracking both in-plane and out-of-plane Bragg peaks upon optical excitation across the Néel temperature (TN). One transverse mode shows that a quasi-out-of-plane atomic displacement undergoes a significant directional change across TN. Its quasi-in-plane wave vector is derived by comparing the measured sound velocity and the first-principles calculations. The other transverse mode is an interlayer shear acoustic mode whose amplitude is strongly enhanced in the antiferromagnetic phase, exhibiting eight times stronger amplitude than the longitudinal acoustic mode below TN. The atomically resolved characterization of acoustic phonon dynamics that couple with magnetic ordering opens opportunities for harnessing unique magnetoelastic coupling in vdW magnets on ultrafast timescales.

Tunable symmetry breaking in a hexagonal-stacked moiré magnet

Symmetry plays a central role in defining magnetic phases, making tunable symmetry breaking across magnetic transitions highly desirable for discovering non-trivial magnetism. Magnetic moiré superlattices, formed by twisting two-dimensional magnetic crystals, have been theoretically proposed and experimentally explored as platforms for unconventional magnetic states. However, despite recent advances, the ability to tune symmetry breaking in moiré magnetism remains limited, as twisted two-dimensional magnets predominantly inherit the magnetic properties and symmetries of their constituent layers. Here, in this work, we demonstrate a clear evolution of symmetry in hexagonal-stacked twisted double-bilayer CrI 3 as the twist angle increases from 180° to 190°. Although the net magnetization remains zero across this twist-angle range, the magnetic phase breaks only the threefold rotational symmetry at 180°, but it breaks all the rotational, mirror and time-reversal symmetries at intermediate twist angles between 181° and 185°, and all broken symmetries are recovered at 190°. This pronounced symmetry breaking at intermediate twist angles is accompanied by metamagnetic behaviour, evidenced by symmetric double hysteresis loops around zero magnetic field. Together, these results reveal that hexagonal-stacked twisted double-bilayer CrI3 at intermediate twist angles hosts a distinct moiré magnetic phase, featuring periodic in-plane spin textures with broken rotational, mirror and time-reversal symmetries.

Magnetic devil's staircaselike behavior in quasiperiodic qubit lattices

The devil's staircase (DS) phenomenon is a fractal response of magnetization to external fields, traditionally observed in periodic ferromagnetic systems, where the commensurability between spin arrangements, lattice parameters, and external magnetic fields governs abrupt changes in magnetization. Its occurrence in aperiodic, fractal-type systems has remained largely unexplored, despite their natural compatibility with such phenomena. Using a quantum annealing device, we uncover a wealth of abrupt magnetic transitions between spin manifolds driven by increasing external magnetic fields within a simple yet effective Ising-model framework. In contrast to periodic systems, where DS arises from long-range competing interactions, our findings reveal that short-range, purely antiferromagnetic couplings in aperiodic geometries produce equally rich ground-state magnetization patterns. Here, we demonstrate that while magnetic textures are determined by the lattice size, their formation remains remarkably robust and independent of scale, with commensurability emerging locally. Our results challenge the prevailing view that DS behavior is limited to periodic systems and establish quasiperiodic geometries as a natural host for this phenomenon.

Local atomic and magnetic structure of multiferroic (Sr,Ba)⁢(Mn,Ti)⁢O 3

Here, we present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation (μSR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and μSR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show that these short-range magnetic correlations coincide with a reduction of the tetragonal (i.e., ferroelectric) distortion in the average structure, suggesting that short-range magnetism can play an important role in magnetoelectric and/or magnetostructural phenomena even without genuine long-range magnetic order. The reduction of the tetragonal distortion scales linearly with the local magnetic order parameter, pointing to spontaneous linear magnetoelectric coupling in this system. These findings provide greater insight into the multiferroic properties of (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 and demonstrate the importance of investigating the local atomic and magnetic structure to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwined degrees of freedom in multiferroics.

Single-crystal growth and characterization of antiferromagnetically ordered EuIn 2

Here, we report the single crystal growth and characterization of EuIn 2 , a magnetic topological semimetal candidate according to our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We present results from electrical resistance, magnetization, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) measurements. We observe three magnetic transitions at T N1 ~ 14.2 K, T N2 ~ 12.8 K and T N3 ~ 11 K, signatures of which are consistently seen in anisotropic temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistance data. Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements on ground crystals suggest an incommensurate sinusoidally modulated magnetic structure below the transition at T N1 ~ 14 K, followed by the appearance of higher harmonics in the modulation on further cooling roughly below T N2 ~ 13 K, before the moment distribution squaring up below the lowest transition around T N3 ~ 11 K. XRMS measurements showed the appearance of magnetic Bragg peaks below T N1 ~ 14 K, with a propagation vector of $τ$ = ($τ_h$, $\overline{τ}_h$, 0), with $τ_h$ varying with temperature, and showing a jump at T N3 ~ 11 K. The temperature dependence of $τ_h$ between ~ 11 K and 14 K shows incommensurate values consistent with the Mössbauer data. XRMS data indicate that $τ_h$ remains incommensurate at low temperatures and locks into $τ_h$ = 0.3443(1).

Non-magnetic ion site disorder effects on the quantum magnetism of a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Here, with the motivation to study how non-magnetic ion site disorder affects the quantum magnetism of Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet, we performed DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystalline samples of Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 with Sr doping on non-magnetic Ba 2+ ion sites. The results show that Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 exhibits (i) a two-step magnetic transition at 2.7 K and 3.3 K, respectively; (ii) a possible canted 120 degree spin structure at zero field with reduced ordered moment as 1.24 μ B /Co; (iii) a series of spin state transitions for both H∥ab-plane and H∥c-axis. For H∥ab-plane, the magnetization plateau feature related to the up–up–down phase is significantly suppressed; (iv) an inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with only one gapped mode at zero field, which splits to one gapless and one gapped mode at 9 T. All these features are distinctly different from those observed for the parent compound Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , which demonstrates that the non-magnetic ion site disorder (the Sr doping) plays a complex role on the magnetic properties beyond the conventionally expected randomization of the exchange interactions. We propose the additional effects including the enhancement of quantum spin fluctuations and introduction of a possible spatial anisotropy through the local structural distortions.

Complex magnetic ordering in EuAl 4 –A 151 Eu Mössbauer study

151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy has been used to investigate the behaviour of EuAl 4 through the four magnetic transitions that occur below 16 K. We find clear evidence for the first transition (T N1 , the onset of order) where an incommensurate modulated magnetic structure appears, and the third (T N3 ) where the modulation disappears at the tetragonal → orthorhombic structural transition. We see no changes at the lowest transition (T N4 ) but find that the modulation amplitude passes through a maximum at T N2 . Data on the isostructural but magnetically simpler EuGa 4 are also presented for comparison.

Magnetic phase diagram mapping in Fe 1- x Rh x composition-spread thin films

We have fabricated high-quality polycrystalline Fe 1- x Rh x composition-spread thin films by cosputtering Fe and Rh, and investigated their structural and magnetic transformations as a systematic function of composition. With increasing Rh concentration, Fe 1-x Rh x thin film undergoes from an α' phase to a disordered γ phase and also shows a magnetic transition from a ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phase. Vibrating-sample magnetometry and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements show an antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in the range of 0.52 < x < 0.58 in the Fe 1- x Rh x composition gradient at room temperature. Based on our structural and magnetic property mapping, we construct a thin-film phase diagram of Fe 1- x Rh x . Compared to reported results in bulk alloys, the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in the Fe 1- x Rh x thin films was found to occur at slightly higher Rh concentrations, while the boundary between the pure γ phase and the α'/ γ mixed phase region is shifted to the lower concentration Rh.

Valence instability across the magnetostructural transition in USb 2

We have performed pressure-dependent x-ray diffraction and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy experiments on USb 2 to further characterize the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition occurring near 8 GPa. We have found the magnetic transition coincides with a tetragonal to orthorhombic transition resulting in a 17% volume collapse as well as a transient f-occupation enhancement. Compared to UAs 2 and UAsS, USb 2 shows a reduced bulk modulus and transition pressure and an increased volume collapse at the structural transition. Except for an enhancement across the transition region, the f occupancy decreases steadily from 1.96 to 1.75.

Complex magnetic order in the decorated spin-chain system Rb 2 Mn 3 ( MoO 4 ) 3 ( OH ) 2

The macroscopic magnetic properties and microscopic magnetic structure of Rb 2 Mn 3 (MoO 4 ) 3 (OH) 2 (space group Pn ma) are investigated by magnetization, heat capacity, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. The compound's crystal structure contains bond-alternating [Mn 3 O 11 ] ∞ chains along the b axis, formed by isosceles triangles of Mn ions occupying two crystallographically nonequivalent sites (the Mn1 site on the base and Mn2 site on the vertex). These chains are only weakly linked to each other by nonmagnetic oxyanions. Both superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and neutron diffraction experiments show two successive magnetic transitions as a function of temperature. On cooling, it transitions from a paramagnetic phase into an incommensurate phase below 4.5 K with a magnetic wave vector near k 1 = ( 0 , 0.46 , 0 ). An additional commensurate antiferromagnetically ordered component arises with k 2 = ( 0, 0, 0), forming a complex magnetic structure below 3.5 K with two different propagation vectors of different stars. On further cooling, the incommensurate wave vector undergoes a lock-in transition below 2.3 K. The experimental results suggest that the magnetic superspace group is Pnma. 1' (0b0) s0ss for the single- k incommensurate phase and is Pn' m a ( 0 b 0 ) 00 s for the two- k magnetic phase. We propose a simplified magnetic structure model taking into account the major ordered contributions, where the commensurate k 2 defines the ordering of the c-axis component of the Mn1 magnetic moment, while the incommensurate k 1 describes the ordering of the ab -plane components of both Mn1 and Mn2 moments into elliptical cycloids.

Insulating ground state and 2−𝑘 magnetic structure of candidate Weyl hydrogen-atom K2⁢Mn3⁢(AsO4)3

The ideal Weyl "hydrogen-atom" semimetal exhibits only a single pair of Weyl nodes and no other trivial states at the Fermi energy. Such a material would be a panacea in the study of Weyl quasi-particles, allowing direct unambiguous observation of their topological properties. The alluaudite-like K2⁢Mn3⁢(AsO4)3 compound was recently proposed as such a material. Here, we use comprehensive experimental work and first-principle calculations to assess this prediction. We find K2⁢Mn3⁢(AsO4)3 crystallizes in the 𝐶⁢2/𝑐 symmetry with a quasi-one-dimensional Mn sublattice, growing as small needle-like crystals. Bulk property measurements reveal magnetic transitions at ≈8 and ≈4 K, which neutron scattering experiments show correspond to two distinct magnetic orders, first a partially ordered ferrimagnetic 𝐤𝟏=(0,0,0) structure at 8 K and a second transition of 𝐤𝟐=(1,0,0) at 4 K to a fully ordered state. Below the second transition, both ordering vectors are necessary to describe the complex magnetic structure with modulated spin magnitudes. Both of the best-fit magnetic structures in this work are found to break the symmetry necessary for the generation of Weyl nodes, though one of the magnetic structures allowed by 𝐤𝟏 does preserve this symmetry. However, the crystals are optically transparent and ellipsometry measurements reveal a large band gap, undermining expectations of semimetallic behavior. Density functional theory calculations predict an insulating antiferromagnetic ground state, in contrast to previous reports, and suggest potential frustration on the magnetic sublattice. Given the wide tunability of the alluaudite structure, we consider ways to push the system closer to a semimetallic state.

Thermodynamic origin of the pressure-induced Invar effect: General criterion and experimental study of Fe 68 ⁢Pd 32

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on 57 Fe 68 Pd 32 at multiple pressures and two temperatures in a diamond-anvil cell. Between 4 and 11GPa, the thermal expansion was zero or slightly negative. This pressure-induced Invar effect was studied further with 57 Fe nuclear forward scattering and nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to obtain information on the pressure-induced changes in both the magnetization and the phonon density of states. Magnetic entropy and phonon entropy were obtained from these results, the latter with additional measurements from inelastic neutron scattering to account for the contributions from Pd atoms. The dependencies of these entropies on pressure gave the magnetic and phonon contributions to thermal expansion. These canceled in the region of pressure-induced Invar behavior, even though they individually increased by more than a factor of 2 below the Curie pressure. The behavior of phonons gives evidence for spin-phonon interactions in Fe 68 Pd 32 . A general explanation of the pressure-induced Invar effect is presented, showing that Invar behavior is typically expected at a pressure P* below a magnetic transition at pressure PC. The difference in pressure P C − P* scales with the fractional reduction in magnetic exchange interaction divided by the average Gr¨uneisen parameter.

Influence of the Cubic Sublattice on Magnetic Coupling between the Tetrahedral Sites of Garnet

Here, we present a study on the nuclear and magnetic structures of two iron-based garnets with magnetic cations isolated on tetrahedral sites. Ca 2 YZr 2 Fe 3 O 12 and Ca 2 LaZr 2 Fe 3 O 12 offer an interesting comparison for examining the effect of increasing cation size within the diamagnetic backbone of the garnet crystal structure, and how such changes affect the magnetic order. Despite both systems exhibiting well-pronounced magnetic transitions at low temperatures, we also find evidence for diffuse magnetic scattering due to a competition between the nearest-neighbor, next nearest-neighbor, and so on, within the tetrahedral sites. This competition results in a complex noncollinear magnetic structure on the tetrahedral sublattice creating a mixture of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions above the long-range ordering temperature near 20 K and suggests that the cubic site of the garnet plays a significant role in mediating the superexchange interactions between tetrahedral cations.

Effect of Mn doping and charge transfer on LaTi 1- x Mn x O 3

Here, we report the magnetic and electronic transport properties of Mn-doped LaTi 1-x Mn x O 3 (x= 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5) as a function of temperature and an applied magnetic field. It was found that the Mn-doped samples show a magnetic transition which is not present in the parent LaTiO 3 . The Mn-doped samples showed fluctuations in magnetization at low fields below their Néel transition temperature indicating electronic phase separation in the material. Increased Mn content in the sample strengthens the ferromagnetic-like moment while maintaining G-type antiferromagnetic phase by charge transfer from Mn to Ti and influencing orbital ordering of the Ti 3+ t 2g orbitals. The results are discussed in parallel with transport and bulk magnetization measurements detailing the electronic behavior. An additional context for the mechanism is supported by first-principles density-function theory calculations.

From Waste-Heat Recovery to Refrigeration: Compositional Tuning of Magnetocaloric Mn 1+ x Sb

Magnetic refrigeration, as well as waste-heat recovery, can be accomplished through the magnetocaloric effect, where temperature changes the magnetic state of a material or vice versa. Promising magnetocaloric materials display large changes in magnetic entropy (ΔS M ) upon application of a moderate magnetic field and are often associated with magnetic materials possessing some degree of magnetostructural coupling. In such compounds, the magnetic transition is coupled to some structural transition at the ordering temperature, and indicators for these are readily calculated by the magnetic deformation proxy Σ M . MnSb, with a Curie temperature T C = 577 K, has a calculated magnetic deformation of Σ M = 5.9% and is a promising candidate material for waste-heat recovery. The temperature dependence of structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of Mn 1+ x Sb, where $x$ is a tunable amount of interstitial Mn, is studied here. specifically, excess Mn is incorporated as an interstitial whose magnetic moment is antialigned with the stoichiometric Mn, and the excess Mn has the effect of lowering T C , such that the Curie temperature can be tuned from 577 K to nearly room temperature at 318 K for $x$ = 0.2. For $x$ = 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2, values of ΔS M under a maximum magnetic field $H$ = 5 T are found to be 3.65, 3.00, and 2.83 J K -1 kg -1 , respectively. While the maximum ΔS M decreases with $x$, the high refrigerant capacity a more holistic measure of performance-is retained in this highly tunable system.

Unconventional short-range structural fluctuations in cuprate superconductors

Abstract The interplay between structural and electronic degrees of freedom in complex materials is the subject of extensive debate in physics and materials science. Particularly interesting questions pertain to the nature and extent of pre-transitional short-range order in diverse systems ranging from shape-memory alloys to unconventional superconductors, and how this microstructure affects macroscopic properties. Here we use neutron and X-ray diffuse scattering to uncover universal structural fluctuations in La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 and Tl 2 Ba 2 CuO 6+δ , two cuprate superconductors with distinct point disorder effects and with optimal superconducting transition temperatures that differ by more than a factor of two. The fluctuations are present in wide doping and temperature ranges, including compositions that maintain high average structural symmetry, and they exhibit unusual, yet simple scaling behaviour. The scaling regime is robust and universal, similar to the well-known critical fluctuations close to second-order phase transitions, but with a distinctly different physical origin. We relate this behaviour to pre-transitional phenomena in a broad class of systems with structural and magnetic transitions, and propose an explanation based on rare structural fluctuations caused by intrinsic nanoscale inhomogeneity. We also uncover parallels with superconducting fluctuations, which indicates that the underlying inhomogeneity plays an important role in cuprate physics.
