GSFC Venus atmosphere simulator

The design and preliminary testing of a Venus Atmosphere Simulation System are described. The system was designed for testing a quadrupole mass spectrometer proposed for the Pioneer-Venus Experiment. The system is capable of providing programmed temperature cycles up to 550 C, and manually controlled pressure up to 100 atmospheres.

Automatically classifying Earth features from orbit

Solid state circuit classifies satellite imagery by spectral signature of vegetation, bare land, water, clouds, or snow. Circuit can be used to sort and separate specific imagery by signature so that only useful data is transmitted to earth. Device saves time and costs involved in manual separation of data.

Development of a three-dimensional supersonic inlet flow analysis

A method for computing three dimensional flow in supersonic inlets is described. An approximate set of governing equations is given for viscous flows which have a primary flow direction. The governing equations are written in general orthogonal coordinates. These equations are modified in the subsonic region of the flow to prevent the phenomenon of branching. Results are presented for the two sample cases: a Mach number equals 2.5 flow in a square duct, and a Mach number equals 3.0 flow in a research jet engine inlet. In the latter case the computed results are compared with the experimental data. A users' manual is included.

Burner liner thermal/structural load modelling

A serious problem exists interfacing the output temperatures and temperature gradients from either the heat transfer codes or engine tests with the input to stress analysis codes. A thermal load transfer code was developed and was used in conjunction with a three-dimensional model of a combustor liner for verification. The 3D heat transfer and stress analysis models of combustor liners and turbine blades were used to validate the mapped temperature produced by the transfer module. Verification cases were made for both finite element and finite difference heat transfer codes. A user manual for the code was written and is available.

Modeling Improvements and Users Manual for Axial-flow Turbine Off-design Computer Code AXOD

An axial-flow turbine off-design performance computer code used for preliminary studies of gas turbine systems was modified and calibrated based on the experimental performance of large aircraft-type turbines. The flow- and loss-model modifications and calibrations are presented in this report. Comparisons are made between computed performances and experimental data for seven turbines over wide ranges of speed and pressure ratio. This report also serves as the users manual for the revised code, which is named AXOD.

Long range targeting for space based rendezvous

The work performed under this grant supported the Dexterous Flight Experiment one STS-62 The project required developing hardware and software for automating a TRAC sensor on orbit. The hardware developed by for the flight has been documented through standard NASA channels since it has to pass safety, environmental, and other issues. The software has not been documented previously, therefore, this report provides a software manual for the TRAC code developed for the grant.
