MuCol Milestone Report No. 7: Consolidated Parameters

This document is comprised of a collection of consolidated parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. These consolidated parameters follow on from the October 2024 Preliminary Parameters Report. Attention has been given to a high-level consistent set of baseline parameters throughout all systems of the complex, following a 10 TeV center-of-mass design. Additional details of the designs contributing to this baseline design are featured in the appendix. Likewise, explorative variations from this baseline set can be found in the appendix. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

Anisotropic inelastic materials milestone 2021

The focus on new fuel and cladding models are drivers for several new capabilities at the MOOSE and BISON levels. Since these materials are anisotropic, they require an extension of our inelastic mechanics capabilities, which currently heavily rely on radial return mapping and the assumption of isotropic stiffness. We plan to add additional code paths to support fully anisotropic materials, without degrading the performance for modeling isotropic materials.

The MPACT 2020 Milestone: Safeguards and Security by Design of Future Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities.

The Materials Protection, Accounting, and Control Technologies (MPACT) campaign, within the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, has developed a Virtual Facility Distributed Test Bed for safeguards and security design for future nuclear fuel cycle facilities. The purpose of the Virtual Test Bed is to bring together experimental and modeling capabilities across the U.S. national laboratory and university complex to provide a one-stop-shop for advanced Safeguards and Security by Design (SSBD). Experimental testing alone of safeguards and security technologies would be cost prohibitive, but testbeds and laboratory processing facilities with safeguards measurement opportunities, coupled with modeling and simulation, provide the ability to generate modern, efficient safeguards and security systems for new facilities. This Virtual Test Bed concept has been demonstrated using a generic electrochemical reprocessing facility as an example, but the concept can be extended to other facilities. While much of the recent work in the MPACT program has focused on electrochemical safeguards and security technologies, the laboratory capabilities have been applied to other facilities in the past (including aqueous reprocessing, fuel fabrication, and molten salt reactors as examples). This paper provides an overview of the Virtual Test Bed concept, a description of the design process, and a baseline safeguards and security design for the example facility. Parallel papers in this issue go into more detail on the various technologies, experimental testing, modeling capabilities, and performance testing.

M3 milestone: Advanced contact 2021

This report describes advanced contact approaches and implementations in FY21 for use in emerging reactors with geometries that differ from LWR/EBR-II cylindrical fuel. Contact remains a challenging and crucially important component of our modeling toolkit. While significant improvements have been made through mortar and automatic differentiation, we explored advanced approaches (i.e., dual mortar) that yields better conditioned systems and will improve the robustness and performance of BISON contact problems. This effort is relevant to emerging reactor types, such as micro reactors and the corresponding complex and numerous contact surfaces. In this report, improvements of the mortar-based contact formulation are described. Benchmark problems and BISON assessment cases are included to demonstrate the improvements and advantages that are brought by the recent capability. Remaining issues are discussed and corresponding development plans are outlined.

Completion of Milestone M3CT-21IN0702028 - Receive Welding Module from IFE (Halden, Norway)

Prior to 2018, the U.S. DOE and the commercial nuclear industry relied upon the Halden Reactor Project’s capability to refabricate and reinstrument previously irradiated fuel rods. This capability has now been lost. This activity is key to recovering that capability and enabling the continuation of critical research on commercial and advanced LWR fuels. This welding module completes the three-module suite the Institute For Energy (IFE) was contracted to deliver to INL. This equipment will be used in FY22 to practice techniques developed at IFE for refabricating and instrumenting prototypical fuel rods.
