Summary of Data from the Sixth AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop: CRM Cases 2 to 5

Results from the Sixth AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop Common Research Model Cases 2 to 5 are presented. As with past workshops, numerical calculations are performed using industry-relevant geometry, methodology, and test cases. Cases 2 to 5 focused on force/moment and pressure predictions for the NASA Common Research Model wing-body and wing-body-nacelle-pylon configurations, including Case 2 - a grid refinement study and nacelle-pylon drag increment prediction study; Case 3 - an angle-of-attack buffet study; Case 4 - an optional wing-body grid adaption study; and Case 5 - an optional wing-body coupled aero-structural simulation. The Common Research Model geometry differed from previous workshops in that it was deformed to the appropriate static aeroelastic twist and deflection at each specified angle-of-attack. The grid refinement study used a common set of overset and unstructured grids, as well as user created Multiblock structured, unstructured, and Cartesian based grids. For the supplied common grids, six levels of refinement were created resulting in grids ranging from 7x10(exp 6) to 208x10(exp 6) cells. This study (Case 2) showed further reduced scatter from previous workshops, and very good prediction of the nacelle-pylon drag increment. Case 3 studied buffet onset at M=0.85 using the Medium grid (20 to 40x10(exp 6) nodes) from the above described sequence. The prescribed alpha sweep used finely spaced intervals through the zone where wing separation was expected to begin. Although the use of the prescribed aeroelastic twist and deflection at each angle-of-attack greatly improved the wing pressure distribution agreement with test data, many solutions still exhibited premature flow separation. The remaining solutions exhibited a significant spread of lift and pitching moment at each angle-of-attack, much of which can be attributed to excessive aft pressure loading and shock location variation. Four Case 4 grid adaption solutions were submitted. Starting with grids less than 2x10(exp 6) grid points, two solutions showed a rapid convergence to an acceptable solution. Four Case 5 coupled aerostructural solutions were submitted. Both showed good agreement with experimental data. Results from this workshop highlight the continuing need for CFD improvement, particularly for conditions with significant flow separation. These comparisons also suggest the need for improved experimental diagnostics to guide future CFD development.

LAURA Users Manual: 5.6

This users manual provides in-depth information concerning installation and execution of Laura, version 5. Laura is a structured, multiblock, computational aerothermodynamic simulation code. Version 5 represents a major refactoring of the original Fortran 77 Laura code toward a modular structure afforded by Fortran 95. The refactoring improved usability and maintainability by eliminating the requirement for problem-dependent recompilations, providing more intuitive distribution of functionality, and simplifying inter- faces required for multi-physics coupling. As a result, Laura now shares gas-physics modules, MPI modules, and other low-level modules with the Fun3D unstructured-grid code. In addition to internal refactoring, several new features and capabilities have been added, e.g., a GNU-standard installation process, parallel load balancing, automatic trajectory point sequencing, free-energy minimization, and coupled ablation and flow field radiation.

TPSAS-NF1676L-10767-DND

Version 2.1ae of the NASA CFD code OVERFLOW has been used to simulate the flow past tandem cylinders. The multiblock grid system consisted of 15 overset meshes with a total grid count of 15.7 million points. The grid extended 3 cylinder diameters in the spanwise direction with periodic boundary conditions at the ends. Riemann conditions were used at the outer boundaries, and a no-slip condition on the cylinder surfaces. The 3rd order HLLC upwind spatial discretization scheme was used with a dual-time stepping algorithm. A modified version of the Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation hybrid RANS/LES turbulence model proposed by Spalart was used in a fully turbulent mode. The code was run on 53 Core 2 Duo nodes using MPI across nodes and OPENMP within each node. Simulation results will be compared with the available experimental data.

VULCAN-CFD User Manual: Ver. 7.2.0

VULCAN-CFD offers a comprehensive set of capabilities to enable the simulation of continuum flowfields from subsonic to hypersonic conditions. The governing equations that are employed include allowances for both chemical and thermal nonequilibrium processes, coupled with a wide variety of turbulence models for both Reynolds-averaged and large eddy simulations. The software package can simulate two-dimensional, axisymmetric, or three-dimensional problems on structured multiblock meshes or fully unstructured meshes. A parabolic (i.e., space-marching) treatment can also be used for any subset of a structured mesh that can accommodate this solution strategy. The flow solver provides a significant level of geometric flexibility for structured grid simulations by allowing for arbitrary face-to-face C(0) continuous and non-C(0) continuous block interface connectivities. The unstructured grid paradigm allows for mixed element unstructured meshes that contain any combination of tetrahedral, prismatic, pyramidal, and hexahedral cell elements. The flow solver is also fully parallelized using MPI (Message Passing Interface) libraries in a data-parallel fashion, allowing for efficient simulations on modern High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. This document provides information related to the installation and execution of the VULCAN-CFD software package. A detailed description of the physical and numerical models available in the software are provided in the VULCAN-CFD Theory Manual.

Automatic Boundary-Layer Adaptation of Structured Grids in VULCAN-CFD

In supersonic and hypersonic flow computations, well-resolved boundary layers are essential for accurate quantification of surface heating and transition prediction, particularly via linear stability analysis. Grid design for hypersonic flows with shocks, boundary-layer separation, and/or complex mean flow features incorporating spanwise/azimuthal inhomogeneities is a difficult issue. In comparison to a manual grid adaptation procedure, an autonomous grid adaptation technique offers significant improvements in computing time and solution quality. The VULCAN-CFD solver already includes a validated procedure for automatic adaption of structured grids to the bow shock. The present focus is on implementing an automatic boundary-layer adaptation capability in VULCAN-CFD that adapts structured, multiblock grids to both the bow shock and the boundary layer at the same time. The boundary-layer adaptation algorithm allows the user to specify the number of cells within the boundary layer, along with the input parameters used for detecting the edge of the boundary layer, namely, the variable used in the edge detection criterion, the edge detection method, the detection direction, and the relaxation factor used during the morphing of the grid. The algorithm automatically distributes grid points along the wall-normal direction to achieve a smooth variation in grid spacing from the edge of the boundary layer to a"junction" location within the outer part of the grid. Illustrative results are presented for three different high-speed configurations: the two-dimensional flow over a cylinder at Mach 17.6 and unit Reynolds number of Re=0.38x10^6 m^-1, the axisymmetric flow over a cone-cylinder-flare model at Mach 6.0 and Re = 10.5×10^6 m^-1, and the three-dimensional flow over a blunt, 7-degree half-angle cone at 5-degree angle of attack in a Mach 9.79 flow with Re = 17.1×10^6 m^-1. The automated boundary-layer adaptation is shown to provide an adequate grid topology that is aligned with the bow shock in the outer part of the grid and also resolves the viscous boundary-layer region close to the surface.
