The Intelsat 4 antenna positioner

The Intelsat 4 communications satellite has two spot beam antennas which are pointed to selected land masses by gimbaled positioners. The positioners employ drive motors with electromagnetic brakes and jackscrews that are self-caging during the launch. The positioner uses dry lubricants for ball bearings, spur gears, screw and nut, and various journal bearings. A coefficient of friction of approximately 0.05 was demonstrated in vacuum operation. Success of the positioner was demonstrated on the first Intelsat 4 placed in orbit in January 1971. The developmental problems that were encountered and their solutions are discussed.

Closed anisotropic cosmological models.

Derivation of a new exact solution to Einstein's equations representing homogeneous nonisotropic cosmological models of a closed universe containing electromagnetic and scalar fields. This solution reduces to a generalization of Brill's electromagnetic universe when the scalar field vanishes, and to the Taub-NUT-M space when both these fields vanish. The solutions also satisfy the scalar tensor equations and represent a universe containing electromagnetic fields and a source-free solution to the scalar-tensor equations representing a closed universe.

Redundant screwjack

Device uses differential gears to drive either one of two nut-screw assemblies. In event that one assembly jams, second assembly is driven at twice its normal rate with no loss in overall performance.

Straight-line IC removal tool

Tool operates by applying force perpendicularly to socket plane. Tool can be operated in cramped or confined quarters and can effect integrated circuit removal without damage. It may also be useful to hold nut or bolt in confined space while tightening, when it is not possible to use conventional tool.

Insert facing tool

A manually actuated tool for facing the exposed end of an insert installed in a honeycomb panel is described. Several cutting bits are held in a round body portion that is rotated around the end of a stud to provide the cutting action. Pressure is adjusted through a spring against the body portion and the surface of the stud by a pressure nut threaded on the stud. A diagram of the components of the device is provided.

Analysis of the dynamics and frequency spectrum synthesis of an optical-mechanical scanning device

A two-coordinate optical-mechanical scanning device (OMSD), the operating unit of which is a scanning disk, with directional and focusing optics and a board, on which the data carrier is placed, is examined. The disk and board are kinematically connected by a transmission mechanism, consisting of a worm and complex gear drive and a tightening screw-nut with correcting device, and it is run by a synchronous type motor. The dynamic errors in the system depend, first, on irregularities in rotation of the disk, fluctuations in its axis and vibrations of the table in the plane parallel to the plane of the disk. The basic sources of the fluctuations referred to above are residual disbalance of the rotor and other rotating masses, the periodic component of the driving torque of the synchronous motor, variability in the resistance, kinematic errors in the drive and other things. The fluctuations can be transmitted to the operating units through the kinematic link as a flexural-torsional system, as well as through vibrations of the housing of the device.

Trends in mechanical fasteners

Some of the specialty fasteners which are enjoying increasing usage are: thread rolling screws, self drilling and tapping screws, locking screws, tamperproof fasteners, and flanged bolts and nuts. The development of an optimum metric fastener system is recommended for future fastener manufacturing.

Flight feeding systems design and evaluation. Supplement 1: Production guides

The requirements for processing, packaging, testing, and shipment of foods selected for use in the Apollo food system are presented. Specific foodstuffs chosen from the following categories are discussed: (1) soups; (2) juices; (3) breads; (4) meat and poultry products; (5) fruits and nuts; (6) desserts; and (7) beverages. Food procurement for the mobile quarantine facility and for Apollo preflight and postflight activities is also discussed.

Study to define behavior of liquid lubricants in an elastohydrodynamic contact

The spectra of an ester and a saturated hydrocarbon polymer were obtained at pressures ranging from ambient to 2 GN/sq m (20 kilobar) and at temperatures between ambient and 180 C in absorption and between 150 C and 210 C in emission. To simulate contact conditions the fluids were contained in the tiny sample volume of a diamond cell, i.e., the hole in a metal spacer separating two diamonds pressed against each other in a nut crackerlike arrangement. Pressures could be deduced from bandshifts and states of aggregation from bandwidths in the fluorescence spectrum of a ruby crystal immersed in the fluids. An infrared Fourier transform spectrometer was used with attachments specially designed to analyze the radiation passed through the sample and both diamonds (absorption technique) or the radiation emanating from the heated sample and passing through only one diamond (emission technique). The latter technique is applicable to operating EHD contacts. Spectral changes pointing to possible glass transitions and composition changes were observed. Emission and absorption spectra were generally equivalent. Some emission bandshapes appear to be temperature sensitive enough to be useful as internal temperature probes.

A CW ultrasonic bolt-strain monitor

There exists a need for a relatively inexpensive system for measuring strain in bolts. The torque wrench is one technique for straining bolts which has been widely applied. Unfortunately, friction in the bolt threads and between the nut and the work tend to make such a simple system inaccurate. In practice, a torque wrench is unacceptable for many situations where strain is critical. In this article, an ultrasonic technique is described which can indicate changes in bolt strain to better than one part in 10,000. The technique is based on the one-dimensional propagating-ultrasonic-wave model and uses a new ultrasonic instrument called a Reflection Oscillator Ultrasonic Spectrometer which is a closed-loop feedback marginal-oscillator system that frequency locks the device to the peak of a mechanical resonance in the bolt. The instrument indicates a shift in the bolt resonance frequency due to elongation and changes in velocity of sound due to strain. Data are presented comparing a standard torque wrench to the ultrasonic monitor for different measured stresses on the bolt as well as for different bolt conditions. The strain instrument can be used to monitor changing stresses, to measure material properties and may be applied as a strain gage or load cell.

Mechanical-load indicator

By rotation of washerlike part, mechanical indicator shows when predetermined compression or tension load has been reached. Indicator consists of bolt, sleeve, load-indicating washer, and nut. Besides application as load indicator, device has uses as remote indicator of mechanical action. Rotating washer can also act as sequencer, signaling action to begin upon attainment of certain load. It can be used, for example, to initiate work cycle after stored energy has been built up in hydraulic or pneumatic power equipment. It can also be used as remote, nonelectrical switch in hazardous environments.

Mechanical end joint for structural columns

Connector for tubular struts permits construction of lightweight frames without tools or assembly equipment. Two main components are node fitting and strut element. Components are aleaned approximately and pushed together. Design accommodates reasonable axial and rotational misalignment of nodes and struts. Also, individual columns can be inserted into receptacle and given slight push by operator, trigger pins release ratchet, allowing energy stored in springs to rotate screw into nut in receptacle.

Self-energized screw coupling

Threaded coupling carries its own store of rotational energy. Originally developed to ease task of astronauts assembling structures in space, coupling offers same advantages in other hazardous operations, such as underwater and in and around nuclear reactors. Coupling consists of two parts: crew portion and receptacle. When screw portion is inserted into receptacle and given slight push by operator, trigger pins release ratchet, allowing energy stored in springs to rotate screw into nut in receptacle.
