Binary phase lock loops for simplified OMEGA receivers

A sampled binary phase lock loop is proposed for periodically correcting OMEGA receiver internal clocks. The circuit is particularly simple to implement and provides a means of generating long range 3.4 KHz difference frequency lanes from simultaneous pair measurements.

Method of implementing digital phase-locked loops

In a new formulation for digital phase-locked loops, loop-filter constants are determined from loop roots that can each be selectively placed in the s-plane on the basis of a new set of parameters, each with simple and direct physical meaning in terms of loop noise bandwidth, root-specific decay rate, or root-specific damping. Loops of first to fourth order are treated in the continuous-update approximation (BLT yields 0) and in a discrete-update formulation with arbitrary BLT. Deficiencies of the continuous-update approximation in large-BLT applications are avoided in the new discrete-update formulation. A new method for direct, transient-free acquisition with third- and fourth-order loops can improve the versatility and reliability of acquisition with such loops.

Strain Insensitive Optical Phase Locked Loop

An apparatus is provided to allow for quasi distributed sensing of strain within a test object. Strain insensitive fiber is used to deliver a light signal to a strain sensitive fiber in an optical phase locked loop sensor configuration. The use of strain insensitive delivery fiber allows for non-integrated measurements of strain without the use of expensive electronics such as those employed in ODTR techniques. The novelty of the present invention lies in the use of strain insensitive multimode fiber. The inventors had previously developed a similar sensor with strain insensitive fiber, however it was restricted to the use of single or few mode fibers. The use of an optical phase locked loop arrangement allows for the use of multimode strain insensitive fiber.

An analysis of digital phase-locked loops

This report focuses on second-order digital phase-locked loops (DPLLs) with uniformly sampled input, an amplitude-insenstive phase extractor and a conventional loop filter.

Ultrasonic pulsed phase locked loop interferometer for bolt load measurements

The pulsed phase-locked-loop bolt monitor (P2L2) that uses ultrasonic waves to measure bolt preload with accuracies ranging from 1 to 3 percent (depending on the specific bolt) is described. To remeasure bolt load after installation, a thermal calibration factor compensates for bolt temperature changes, and a standard reference block allows correction for acoustic phase errors due to measurement equipment configuration such as utilization of a different transducer, couplant, or cable. Some examples of critical applications including Space Shuttle landing-gear wheels and NASA wind-tunnel fan blades are discussed.

Digital phase-lock loop having an estimator and predictor of error

A digital phase-lock loop (DPLL) which generates a signal with a phase that approximates the phase of a received signal with a linear estimator. The effect of a complication associated with non-zero transport delays related to DPLL mechanization is then compensated by a predictor. The estimator provides recursive estimates of phase, frequency, and higher order derivatives, while the predictor compensates for transport lag inherent in the loop.

Diffraction coupled phase-locked semiconductor laser array

A new monolithic, diffraction coupled phase-locked semiconductor laser array has been fabricated. Stable narrow far-field patterns (approximately 3 deg) and peak power levels of 1 W have been obtained for 100-micron-wide devices with threshold currents as low as 250 mA. Such devices may be useful in applications where high power levels and stable radiation patterns are needed.

Separate-contact phase-locked semiconductor laser arrays

The novel optoelectronic devices discussed, phase-locked semiconductor laser arrays with separate contacts can perform a variety of near field and far field pattern tailoring functions and control mutual coherence among array elements, as well as lasing wavelength selectivity and tunability. Attention is presently given to experimental results from such arrays, which indicate that the threshold currents of the 4-micron wide lasers employed are typically 60 mA. The separate contacts to each one of them are provided by means of two-level metallization.

Phase-locked injection laser arrays with variable stripe spacing

A phase-locked injection laser array is described which utilizes variations in spacing of identical lasing elements to vary the coupling between them. A coupled-mode analysis indicates that excellent matching of fundamental array mode to a uniform gain distribution can be obtained. Observation of the array emission patterns confirms the results of the coupled-mode analysis.

Phase-lock demodulation of a PM signal contaminated with incidental AM

Signals from phase-modulated satellite transmitters usually exhibit some degree of incidental amplitude modulation. The effects of incidental AM are analyzed when this type of signal is demodulated by a phase-lock receiver which does not employ a limiter preceding the loop phase detector. The presence of incidental AM causes a reduction in the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio. The tolerable level of AM decreases in proportion to the phase modulation index Beta. For a square-wave modulating signal, a 1 db reduction results at the receiver PM channel output when Beta = 1 radian and the percentage of AM = 23, Beta = 1.2 radians and the percentage of AM = 16, or Beta = 1.5 radians and the percentage of AM = 4. Although only the PM channel of the receiver is used ordinarily, utilizing both the AM and PM channel by summing offers an improvement in S/N relative to the S/N ratio of the PM channel if the percentage of incidental AM is greater than fifteen.

Continuous-Wave Single-Frequency Operation of Fabry-Perot Laser Diodes by Self-Injection Phase Locking Using Feedback from a Fiber Bragg Grating

Single-frequency operation of uncoated Fabry-Perot laser diodes is demonstrated by phase- locking the laser oscillations through self-injection seeding with feedback from a fiber Bragg grating. By precisely tuning the laser temperature so that an axial-mode coincides with the short-wavelength band edge of the grating, the phase of the feedback is made conjugate to that of the axial mode, locking the phase of the laser oscillations to that mode.
