Development and Testing of an Ultracapacitor Based Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) System

The NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) initiated the development and testing of an ultracapacitor based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system as a means to provide backup power for the many critical NASA applications. A UPS system typically utilizes batteries for energy storage. The battery is the most vulnerable part of the UPS system, requiring regular maintenance and replacement. Battery performance is also extremely temperature dependent. Ultracapacitors are ideal for UPS systems where long life, maintenance free operation, and excellent low temperature performance is essential. State of the art symmetric ultracapacitors were used for these tests. The ultracapacitors were interconnected in an innovative configuration to minimize interconnection impedance, and to provide voltage balancing. Ultracapacitors can be charged extremely rapidly and supply high current, which are essential characteristics for an effective UPS system. Charging ultracapacitors is significantly less complex than charging batteries since there is no chemical reaction occurring while charging ultracapacitors. The report concludes that the implementation of symmetric ultracapacitors in a UPS system can provide significant improvements in power system performance and reliability.

Standardized multiple output power supply

A comprehensive program to develop a prototype model of a standardized multiple output power supply for use in space flight applications is described. The prototype unit was tested and evaluated to assure that the design would provide near optimum performance for the planned application. The prototype design used a dc-to-dc converter incorporating reqenerative current feedback with a time-ratio controlled duty cycle to achieve high efficiency over a wide variation of input voltage and output loads. The packaging concept uses a mainframe capable of accommodating up to four inverter/regulator modules with one common input filter and housekeeping module. Each inverter/regulator module provides a maximum of 100 watts or 10 amperes. Each module is adaptable to operate at any voltage between 4.0 volts and 108 volts. The prototype unit contains +5, + or - 15 and +28 volt modules.

Operation of Dual-T-Type Modular Multilevel Converter for Uninterrupted Power Supply Under Bridge Failures

Dual-T-type modular multilevel converter (DTMMC) is an alternative to the existing uninterrupted power supply (UPS) due to its advantage in flexible leg reusing, multiple power ports, and high operating efficiency. Here, in this article, a DTMMC-UPS, which has series configurations on both input/output ac sides, obtains high-voltage grid/load accessing interfaces is presented. In the described system, the fact that copies of T-type legs are employed makes semiconductor failure common to happen. Moreover, both the coupling between rectifier and inverter conversions and the confliction between intercell and inner-cell voltage balancing make fault-tolerant control a tough issue. In this article, the switch fault types are first clarified and diagnosed by the different impacts on normal operation. An improved voltage vector modulation is then deduced to facilitate the planning of proper primary switching patterns, to achieve rectifier side normal operation. The secondary alternated level-shifted pulsed-width modulation (LS-PWM) is also modified to achieve inverter side normal operation. The experiment results are supplied to verify the validity of the modulation-coordinated fault toleration strategy.

Medium-Voltage Isolated Auxiliary Power Supply Design for High Insulation Capability, Ultra-Low Coupling Capacitance, and Small Size

To fully utilize the benefits of medium-voltage (MV) silicon carbide (SiC)-based converter and achieve high power density, the isolated auxiliary power supply (IAPS) needs to be as small as possible. However, the high insulation and low coupling capacitance requirements, considering the high voltage and high dv / dt , are constraints of size reduction. This article proposes an MV IAPS design for high insulation capability, ultra-low coupling capacitance, and small size. The topology selection, efficiency, load regulation, coupling capacitance, and size reduction considerations are discussed. A 2.5 W MV IAPS is designed and built for a 10 kV SiC mosfet -based 13.8 kV/100 kW three-phase converter, achieving a partial discharge (PD) inception voltage of higher than 15 kV rms, ultra-low coupling capacitance of 1.03 pF, and smaller size than that of the commercial products as well as the state-of-art research prototypes. Experimental results of PD test, 10 kV SiC mosfet -based half-bridge test, and 13.8 kV/100 kVA three-phase converter full rating test are conducted for design validation.

Subcutaneous power supply by NIR-II light

Implantable medical devices are wished to be recharged via contactless power transfer technologies without interventional operations. Superior to subcutaneous power supply by visible light or electromagnetic wave, second near-infrared (NIR-II) light is predicted to possess 60 times subcutaneous power transmission but hard to be utilized. Here we report a photo-thermal-electric converter via the combination of photothermal conversion and thermoelectric conversion. It is able to generate an output power as high as 195 mW under the coverage of excised tissues, presenting advantages of non-invasion, high output power, negligible biological damage, and deep tissue penetration. As an in vivo demonstration, the output power of a packaged converter in the abdominal cavity of a rabbit reaches 20 mW under NIR-II light irradiation through the rabbit skin with a thickness of 8.5 mm. This value is high enough to recharge an implanted high-power-consumption wireless camera and transfer video signal out of body in real-time.

Wide-Input Voltage Range Two-Stages Auxiliary Power Supply for Medium Voltage Applications

This paper aims to present a two-stages auxiliary power supply (APS) providing 24 V output over a wide input DC voltage range, from 600 V to 2 kV. In this architecture, the medium voltage to low voltage scale is addressed by a simplified DC transformer (DCX) stage while the low voltage tight regulation is proposed to be accomplished in a cascaded second stage. Such architecture provides a simpler approach to the industry for the design of APS in MV applications. The implementation of main building blocks of the APS including the DCX stage, startup circuit and self-powered circuit is described. Experimental results at 1400 V and 100 W are presented.

Reduced Common-Mode Voltage PWM Scheme for Full-SiC Three-Level Uninterruptible Power Supply With Small DC-Link Capacitors

In this article, a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for three-level full-SiC uninterruptible power supplies is developed to achieve a high power density. Two key passive components are selected for size reduction of the ac-ac stage: common-mode (CM) EMI filter, and dc-link capacitors. To reduce the CM noise, a new vector combination is proposed based on synchronous switching among three-phases. The proposed combinations align CM voltage (CMV) to be a single pulse per switching period. Owing to the simple shape, CMV cancellation between a three-level rectifier and inverter can be maximally utilized. A transition between the three combinations can control the drift of neutral point voltage. An equivalent carrier-based implementation is developed. Second, a simple algorithm to compensate neutral point voltage fluctuation is proposed both for differential mode (DM) and CM output voltage. Low-order harmonics on three-phase currents and an additional high-frequency CM noise by misaligned switching instant can be eliminated. The proposed compensation can be implemented by a simple correction on carrier slopes and injected zero-sequence voltage. The proposed PWM scheme is verified with 20-kW full-SiC UPS switching at 60 kHz with 140 μF dc-link capacitors.

Piezoelectric transformer and modular connections for high power and high voltage power supplies

A modular design for combining piezoelectric transformers is provided for high voltage and high power conversion applications. The input portions of individual piezoelectric transformers are driven for a single power supply. This created the vibration and the conversion of electrical to electrical energy from the input to the output of the transformers. The output portions of the single piezoelectric transformers are combining in series and/or parallel to provide multiple outputs having different rating of voltage and current.

ESR Dipole Power Supply Current Ripple and Noise Specifications

This note presents key findings for the ESR main magnet dipole power supplies (PS), where we find the current ripple specification to be close to or beyond the state-of-the-art. These specifications originate from beam-beam considerations, with the requirement to limit the ripple-induced hadron emittance growth to below 10%/hour. Beam dynamics that drive this PS ripple specification arise from the beam motions at the Interaction Point (IP). The frequency of the motions can be separated into "low", compared to the betatron frequency, and "high", i.e. around the betatron frequency and harmonics. In terms of the driving frequency, "low" implies ƒ<<ƒ 0 v x,y and "fast" means ƒ≈{ƒ 0 v x,y , ƒ 0 (1- v x,y , etc.}, where ƒ 0 =1/ T 0 =78.2 kHz is the revolution frequency, and v x,y are the fractional parts of the betatron tunes. Frequencies higher than ƒ 0 /2 will be folded back due to the particles sampling the field once per turn. To provide flexibility for future lattice adjustments and working point variations, we do not consider the tunes as fixed. Instead, we assume a certain margin and allow them to potentially fall within the range of 0.1< v x,y <0.5. In other words, the high-frequency region spans approximately from 8kHz to 40 kHz. Consequently,, we definte the dipole PS ripple in two distinct frequency ranges: the low-frequency range of [1-8000] Hz and the high-frequency range of [8-40] kHz. For the physics effects we analyzed in this note, there is no distinction between the ripple (which can be approximately reproduced in the frequency domain) and the random noise if both have some power within the frequency bandwidth of interest. Therefore, while we will use the term "ripple" for short, it should always be understood that we are referring to "ripple plus noise." Except for the lower end of the low-frequency range, the impact of the rippling PS current on the beam will be considerably reduced due to the eddy currents induced in the walls of the vacuum chamber. We will account for this effect in the PS ripple specifications to follow. The remaining sections of this note are structure as follows: Section II outlines the beam-beam physics requirements for the positional stability of the beam at the IP. Section III describes the anticipated shielding effect of the eddy currents induced in the vacuum chamber. Section IV derives the ripple requirement for the low-frequency range by propagating the closed orbit ripple resulting from the rippling dipoles to the IP (relevant lattice simulation results are summarized in the Appendix). In Section V, we present the analytical criterion for the ripple in the high-frequency range by considering resonant oscillations of the electron beam around a stable closed orbit near the betatron frequency. Finally, Section VI provides a summary of our findings and discusses related work.
