Pneumatic flow comparator

Pneumatic flow comparator provides simple go, no-go evaluation of individual tubes. Flow characteristics of tubes used to form the walls of regeneratively cooled combustors must be identical within very close tolerances to ensure equally distributed coolant flow throughout the combustor wall.

Advanced thrust chamber designs

A regeneratively cooled thrust chamber has been designed and fabricated, consisting of an inner TD nickel liner which was spin formed, welded, and machined and an outer shell of electroformed nickel. Coolant channels were produced in the outer surface of the inner liner by the electric discharge machining process before electroforming the shell. Accessory manifolds and piping were attached by welding. Manufacturing processes employed are described.

Feasibility study of a pressure-fed engine for a water recoverable space shuttle booster. Volume 1: Executive summary

The activities leading to a tentative concept selection for a pressure-fed engine and propulsion support are outlined. Multiple engine concepts were evaluted through parallel engine major component and system analyses. Booster vehicle coordination, tradeoffs, and technology/development aspects are included. The concept selected for further evaluation has a regeneratively cooled combustion chamber and nozzle in conjuction with an impinging element injector. The propellants chosen are LOX/RP-1, and combustion stabilizing baffles are used to assure dynamic combustion stability.

Wall temperature distribution calculation for a rocket nozzle contour

The JANNAF turbulent boundary layer (TBL) computer program, applicable to rocket nozzles, requires a wall temperature distribution among other input parameters to determine boundary layer behavior, heat transfer, and performance degradation. The inclusion of a complete regenerative cooling cycle model with associate geometry, material and fluid property data provides a capability to internally calculate wall temperature profiles on the hot gas and coolant flow-side, as well as the coolant flow bulk temperature variation. Besides the regular heat transfer and performance degradation calculations, the new concept can be used to optimize the cooling cycle, flow requirements, and cooling jacket geometry.

Performance potential of gas-core and fusion rockets - A mission applications survey.

This paper reports an evaluation of the performance potential of five nuclear rocket engines for four mission classes. These engines are: the regeneratively cooled gas-core nuclear rocket; the light bulb gas-core nuclear rocket; the space-radiator cooled gas-core nuclear rocket; the fusion rocket; and an advanced solid-core nuclear rocket which is included for comparison. The missions considered are: earth-to-orbit launch; near-earth space missions; close interplanetary missions; and distant interplanetary missions. For each of these missions, the capabilities of each rocket engine type are compared in terms of payload ratio for the earth launch mission or by the initial vehicle mass in earth orbit for space missions (a measure of initial cost). Other factors which might determine the engine choice are discussed. It is shown that a 60 day manned round trip to Mars is conceivable.-

A review of film boiling at cryogenic temperatures.

Film boiling occurs in the quenching of metals, the chilling of biological species, the regenerative cooling of rockets, and the cooling down of a cryogenic fuel tank. Occasionally film boiling is also found in a nuclear reactor or in a cryomagnet. Aspects of film boiling involving an unconstrained liquid mass are considered, giving attention to the evaporation time, the Leidenfrost temperature, solid-liquid contacts, the thermal properties of the solid, effects of coating or scale, wettability, the metastable condition, and the velocity effect on drops. Developments discussed with regard to pool boiling are related to vertical surfaces, film boiling from horizontal surfaces, film boiling from a horizontal cylinder, film boiling from a sphere, and film boiling of helium. Processes of film boiling in a channel are also analyzed.
